• Traditionally used to help support digestion, flatulence, intestinal colic, nausea, fever, coughs, colds and more.
The best peppermint comes from the northwestern United States. The pure, moist mountain air of the spring and early summer growing season gives this peppermint some of the highest volatile oil counts of any member of the mint family. Generally (dependent upon weather patterns) the second cut (takes place during mid/end August) is the most flavorful, coolest and most pungent,(literally takes your breath away and makes your eyes water).

Peppermint is an herb and contains no caffeine. Peppermint is believed to be a hybrid species that evolved from spearmint and watermint. However, peppermint has been around so long its genealogy is obscure. It has been reported as a stewing herb by ancient Hebrews and it has been found in 3000 year old Egyptian tombs. 2000 years ago the Japanese cultivated peppermint as a source of menthol. Because of it's bright, pungent flavor, peppermint is often used to mask the unpleasant taste of various supplements. Peppermint tea is made from both the leaves and the flowers. As a hot tea it is cool and refreshing, as an iced tea the menthol content produces a pleasantly chilling taste sensation.

A hybrid perennial plant; 1-3 feet tall; the erect, square, branching stem is tinged with reddish-purple (not green as in spearmint) and has opposite, dark green, ovate to lanceo-late, serrate leaves. Axillary and terminal spikes of small, purple (violet) flowers in loose, interrupted terminal spikes, arranged in whorls, appear from July to frost. The whole plant has the characteristic smell of menthol. Spearmint smells like chewing gum; peppermint smells like toothpaste.

The Paiute and Shoshone Indians used a mint (Mentha penardi) known to them as peppermint (Indian name "Paquanah"). They made a tea from the leaves and stems after drying, to help support gas pains. The Chinese use an herb (Mentha Arvensis) known to them as peppermint (Chinese name Po-ho or Fan-ho). The plant grows everywhere in China.

Peppermint grows very prolifically and should be in every herb garden; one of the oldest and best tasting household supportives. Well known for helping support indigestion and colic.

Peppermint is a general stimulant; a strong cup of peppermint tea will act more powerfully on the system than any liquor stimulant. It will quickly diffuse itself through the system and bring back to the body its natural warmth and glow without the usual tendency to relapse. It is good in cases of sudden fainting and/or dizziness with extreme coldness and pale countenance. Often it can be useful for gripping pains caused by eating unripe fruit or irritating foods.

Peppermint tea strengthens the heart muscle and is delicious. Coffee hinders digestion and is a cause of constipation and poisons the body. Peppermint tea cleanses and strengthens the entire body. Drink peppermint tea instead of tea or coffee and see how much better you feel. Instead of using aspirin or some other harmful drug for headaches, take a strong cup of peppermint tea and lie down for a little while. The good effect will be very noticeable. Drink 2 or 3 cups if needed, so that enough gets into the system to help. It strengthens the nerves, instead of weakening them as aspirin and other products do. If the tea is not available, chew some of the leaves until you can swallow them easily. This will assist the body in doing the work more normally; and will start the food digesting process. Studies show that peppermint lessens the time food spends in the stomach by stimulating the gastric lining. It relaxes the stomach and promotes burping, has a calming effect on the body and can help soothe a nagging cough. Helps reduce the sick feeling typical of headaches.

While peppermint, combined with spearmint, is the main source of the mint oil approved by Commission E, the commission thought so highly of peppermint, it gave the herb two more monographs: one for the leaf and one for the oil. We have combined them into one entry on peppermint, which is a hybrid derived from spearmint and considered both more powerful and more versatile than spearmint.

Potential Health Benefits

Commission E commends peppermint leaf for its ability to support healthy digestion, gallbladder, and bile ducts. The commission endorses the essential oil - which is steam-distilled from dried peppermint leaf - for all those uses, plus some others. They include inflammations of the respiratory tract and inflammation of the mouth. For external use, Commission E endorses peppermint oil for effective support for muscle pain and neuralgia (nerve inflammation).

Scientific Evidence

The herb contains at least 1.2 percent essential oil, whose main active ingredient is menthol. According to Varro E. Tyler, Ph.D., in his book Tyler's Honest Herbal, " peppermint oil contains from 50 to 78 percent of free menthol and another 5 to 20 percent of various combined forms of [esters] of menthol. Those major components are also largely responsible for the peppermint's ability to stimulate bile flow and promote digestion."

A German study in 1996 found a mixture of 90 milligrams of peppermint oil and 50 milligrams of caraway, taken in coated capsules, effective in supporting upset stomach. A 1994 study published in the journal Cephalalgia found a combination of peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil as effective as aspirin for helping support headaches when the mixed oils were rubbed on the skin. Commission E doesn't cite this use of peppermint oil, alone or in combination.

How to Use the Herb

The recommended internal dose of peppermint leaf is 3-6 grams. To make tea, pour 1/2 cup of hot water over 1 teaspoonful of leaves, steep for 10 minutes, and strain; drink up to 3 cups per day. For internal use of potent concentrated oil, the average daily dose is 6-12 drops in water; for inhalation, 3-4 drops in hot water; for irritable bowel syndrome, the average single dose is 0.6 milliliters in coated tablets.

Peppermint leaf contains high levels of calcium, essential oils, iron, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, protein, riboflavin, sodium, thiamine, flavonoids, vitamins A and C, and the constituents menthol, methone, tannic acid and terpenes. It enhances digestion by increasing stomach acidity and helping to stimulate bile and digestive juice production; and slightly anesthetizes mucus membranes and supports healthy digestion. Peppermint is good for chills, colic, bowel health, diarrhea, headache, heart trouble, indigestion, nausea, nervous disorders, poor appetite, joint pain and spasms. It is mildly antispasmodic, making it useful for the support for menstrual cramps and nausea, and is also a mild vasodilator, creating a warm, flushed feeling by stimulating circulation. The oil is considered to be useful as a disinfectant.

Peppermint can be safely used to help support a variety of digestive symptoms, help reduce pain from muscle sprains, and possibly even help patients with tension headaches. Huge doses of peppermint oil cause serious toxicity, but peppermint oil, in traditionally-used doses, is a safe, time-proven supportive.

Peppermint is also known by the names Mint, Balm Mint, Curled Mint, Lamb Mint, and Brandy Mint. The plant is found throughout Europe, in moist areas, along stream banks and in waste lands. Mint is one of the most ancient of all health herbs. Ancient Athenians would rub the leaves of mint on their arms to improve their endurance. The Greeks and Romans crowned themselves with Peppermint at their feasts, and adorned their tables with its sprays. They also flavored both their sauces and their wines with its essence. Two species of mint were used for health benefits by the ancient Greek physicians, but some writers doubt whether either was the modern Peppermint, though there is evidence that Mentha piperita was cultivated by the Egyptians. It is mentioned in the Icelandic Pharmacopoeias of the thirteenth century, but only came into general use in the medicine of Western Europe about the middle of the eighteenth century. Today, the United States is the most important producers of Peppermint and Peppermint oil. The primary chemical constituents of Peppermint include essential oils (menthol, menthone, methyl acetate, limonene, pulegone), tannins, flavonoids, choline, and potassium. Peppermint leaves contain about 0.5-4% volatile oil that is composed of 50-78% free menthol and 5-20% menthol combined with other constituents.

Peppermint is an excellent carminative, having a relaxing effect on the muscles of the digestive system, combats flatulence, and stimulates bile and digestive juice flow. It can be used to help support intestinal colic, flatulent dyspepsia and associated complaints. The volatile oil in Peppermint acts as a mild anesthetic to the stomach wall, which allays feelings of nausea and the desire to vomit. This herb has long been known to help support nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, and travel sickness. Peppermint can also be used in supporting complaints of the bowels. It is a traditional support for fevers, colds and digestion. As an inhalant, this herb is used as temporary support for nasal catarrh. Where headaches are associated with digestion, Peppermint may help. As a nervine, it supports anxiety and tension. In painful menstrual periods, it supports the pain and eases associated tension. Externally, it can be used to help support itching, inflammations, and a variety of respiratory complaints. Peppermint oil is also a great expectorant.

Our Peppermint Fennel Dandelion Root tea is a delicious naturally flavored Dandelion Root coffee substitute with Peppermint Leaf, Fennel Seed and Peppermint Leaf that you will enjoy relaxing with anytime! The natural and caffeine-free Peppermint Fennel taste is delicious!

Ingredients: Dandelion Root, Peppermint Leaf, Fennel Seed, Peppermint Leaf and Natural Peppermint Fennel Flavor.

Medicinal Usage

Health-wise, peppermint is carminative, stomachic, stimulant, and tonic. A tea can be useful for allaying insomnia, upset stomachs, nervous tension, headaches, colds, cramps, and many other minor ailments.

Peppermint oil contains menthol, menthone, menthyl acetate, and menthofuran. Extracts of peppermint have proven effective against several irritations. The United States produces more than 80 percent of the world's peppermint and spearmint oil.

Peppermint is probably the most heavily consumed herb tea in North America. Peppermint and spearmint are often neglected as culinary herbs but can be used in tossed and potato salads, desserts, beverages, carrot dishes, or with sauteed parsnips. Mints are high in calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C, and riboflavin, and contain phosphorus, potassium, and niacin.

General Herb Information

There are only about twenty-five true species in the Mewtha genus, but hybridiza- tion has created between two and three thousand variations. Most are Eurasian natives.

M. x piperita, peppermint, a cross between M. spicata and M. aquatica, is a perennial growing to three feet tall, spreading by runners traveling across the soil's surface. The stem is usually reddish-purple and smooth. The leaves are similar to spearmint's, though often longer and less wrinkled. The pink or lilac flowers appear in mid- or late summer. M. x piperita var. citrata, orange or bergamot mint, has a distinctive odor like that of orange rind.

M. suaveolens, apple mint, is a peren- nial that grows to four feet tall with hairy, oval-shaped toothed leaves. The tight flower spikes branch and produce tiny white or pink flowers in midsummer. A smaller variegated cultivar, 'Variegata' has a pineapple-like fragrance and is often sold under the name pineapple mint.

M. requienii, Corsican mint, is a native to Corsica and Sardinia. It is a creeping perennial herb forming a dense ground cover. The stems are thread-like and the leaves are entire, nearly round in shape, and no more than three-eighths inch long. It produces tiny, inconspicuous flowers in midsummer.

Because of mint's propensity to hybridize, buying and planting seeds is a futile effort. You never know what will come up. Start with stem or root cuttings. Any piece of root with a joint or node (about every inch) can produce a plant. Divide the root runners in spring.

Mints require a rich moist soil with good drainage; pH should be neutral to slightly alkaline. Full sun is necessary except for Corsican mint, which requires at least 50 percent shade. If planted in a small garden, mints should stand alone or have some kind of growth barrier like metal or tile placed below the soil around the beds. This will fight the roots from taking over the garden.

There are many species and types of this most popular of family, the Labiatae. Spearmint, or garden mint, is the most commonly grown. Mentha x piperita, peppermint, is the main health herb of this genus. Most species are native to the Mediterranean region and western Asia, and now grow wild throughout North America.

History

Mint was used extensively by the Greeks and Romans. And it was the Romans who introduced both spearmint and mint sauce to Britain.

Characteristics

The plants may grow to a height of over 18 inches. They have tough, vigorous roots and stems, which creep beneath the ground arid establish new plants along the way. The small, bluish-mauve flowers, which tend to bloom late in the summer, are borne in clusters on cylindrical spires.

Growing Tips

The foliage dies in autumn, which is the time to trim the plants and surround them with a mulch. If the plants are attacked by rust they should be burned and fresh ones started in another area.

How to Use

The main constituent in peppermint is the compound menthol which gives it its cool and tingly taste and feel and which makes it invaluable for toothpastes, after shaves, soaps, and bath essence. However, the essential oil of peppermint should be used with caution and never be used undiluted at anytime. Peppermint oil rather than essential oil of peppermint is a culinary preparation which can be used in some cosmetics, e.g. lip balm.

Health-wise,peppermint has a history as a decongestant and antiseptic agent. The plant's oils have an antispasmodic action on the muscle of the gut making it useful for irritable bowel syndrome.

As a supportive for nausea and morning sickness in pregnancy, an internal dose of peppermint is very safe. The external application of the oil helps in controlling muscular discomfort.

Peppermint contains menthol which not only makes it invaluable in preparations for the mouth but also in toners and body massage lotions. Used in astringents it will reduce open pores and tighten and cleanse oily skin. Added to steamers and face packs, it's kind to sallow and greasy skins as it draws and stimulates. It is most effective on the dull and oily areas around the mouth and nose which are a main concern to people with combination skins.

Peppermint oil extract (not essential oil) can be added to a variety of face masks. Chopped peppermint or peppermint extract added to a warm foot bath is extremely soothing. Essential oil of peppermint should not be used without the guidance of a professional aromatherapist.

The cooling, refreshing action of mint is well-known, whether it's found in flavored chewing gum, menthol-spiked cigarettes, or candy after-dinner "mints" - which in ancient times were sprigs of actual, fresh mint. The most popular mints are spearmint and its more assertive cousin, peppermint, a natural hybrid of spearmint first recognized in England in 1696. Most herbalists favor peppermint for health purposes; indeed, peppermint is the "mint oil" endorsed by Commission E.

Potential Health Benefits

Peppermint oil can be used to help support flatulence, gallbladder disorders, and clearing up inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. It's also approved for external use, to help soothe diffuse muscle pain. The active ingredient, menthol, is included in mainstream cold supportives such as Vicks Cough Drops and Mentholatum Cream. Menthol isn't found in spearmint.

Scientific Evidence

Mint oil is obtained by steam distillation of fresh, flowering herb, yielding liquid with at least 42 percent menthol. The commission reports that medicinal amounts of menthol-rich oil stimulates bile flow, has cooling action, helps regulate gas, and exhibits disinfectant qualities.

Studies published in the Journal of Gastroenterology in 1997 and 1998 found enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules effective at supporting irritable bowel syndrome.

In a 1996 German study, 54 lb patients given a capsule with 90 milligrams of peppermint oil extract combined with 50 milligrams of caraway oil far outpaced a placebo group in reporting beneficial results.

In 1994, researchers found peppermint and. eucalyptus oil as effective as aspirin at supporting tension headache when the mixed oil was spread on the skin.

How to Use the Herb

Mint teas are calming and delicious, although Commission E endorsed the oil, not the teas, for traditional health use. Mint oil can be consumed in water, at average daily doses of 3-6 drops; or you can put 3-4 drops in hot water for inhalation.

For external use, try several drops of mint oil or commercial semi-solid preparations, rubbed on the skin.

Name

Mentha x piperita L. (Labiatae), commonly called, Peppermint. In French, it is Menthe poivrée; in German, Pfefferminze, Pfefferminzol, and Pfefferminzblater.

Source

M. Piperitia is a hybrid that can be grown in most temperate climates. It was produced by crossing Mentha aquatica L. and Mentha spicata L. The entire plant is machine harvested just before it blooms and then allowed to dry. All parts of the plant contain an essential oil largely made up of menthol (up to 85 percent). Dried leaves can be used to make teas. Steam distillation is used to extract the essential oil.

History

Peppermint was grown in ancient Egypt. Romans chewed the leaves to help avoid bad breath, and used extracts to flavor wines and foods. It was believed that scattering dried leaves around granaries would keep away rats and mice. For unexplained reasons, peppermint did not reach Europe until the seventeenth century when an English botanist found the plant growing in a field of spearmint, outside of London, in a town named Mitcham. At one time, peppermint was thought to be an aphrodisiac.

Traditional Support Uses

Carminative, spasmolytic and choleretic (a substance that stimulates production of bile).

Commission E Recommendations

Peppermint can be used to help support biliary spasm, gallbladder disorders and digestive concerns.

Possible Effects

Peppermint oil calms intestinal spasm, both in the laboratory and in double-blind, controlled clinical trials. This herb seems to be especially effective in patients with severe cases of irritable bowel syndrome.

At the cellular level, calcium is a key element in muscle contraction, both in the muscles of the intestine and in the muscles that control the diameter of blood vessels. Calcium blocking agents can be used to help support patients with high blood pressure because they fight calcium from entering the cells, and when calcium levels in muscle cells drop, the muscle in the walls of the blood vessels relax, thereby lowering blood pressure. Many patients supported with calcium blockers become severely constipated because the supplements also relax the muscles in the intestines, which means that the bowel doesn't contract with enough force. In the case of patients with irritable bowel syndrome, calcium blockade turns out to be a benefit, not an undesired side effect.

Peppermint oil is said to stimulate the gallbladder to contract, but its effect in humans has not really been studied. In Europe, a standardized herbal combination called Enteroplant, consisting of peppermint oil (90 mg) and caraway (50 mg) in an enteric coated capsule, is very popular for the potential to help support symptoms of mild stomach upset, and its effectiveness has been proven in at least one clinical trial. Other researchers have identified what seems to be a totally unrelated action; in a controlled trial, peppermint oil applied to the skin was just as good as acetaminophen or aspirin at supporting tension headaches.

Dosage

Infusions made from 2 to 3 grams of dried leaf can be used three times a day. Alternatively, 2 to 3 milliliters of a 1:5, 45 percent liquid extract can also be taken three times a day or 6 to 12 drops of essential oil up to three time a day; oil may be applied to the skin, either for the support for headache or to help support muscle pain. When used on the skin, the preparation should contain between 5 and 20 percent essential oil. Nasal oils, used to help support colds in Europe, usually contain 1 to 5 percent oil.

Peppermint
Mentha x piperita L.

Family: Lamiaceae.

Other Names: Menthe poivrée (French); Pfefferminze (German); menta piperina (Italian); la menta (Spanish).

Description: Peppermint has reddish purple, usually hairless stems (up to 0.9 m) and leaves, and the flowers (invariably lilac-pink) are arranged in dense, elongated terminal clusters. Eau-de-cologne mint (M. x piperita var. citrata) has some use in perfumery.

Origin: Peppermint does not occur in nature but is a sterile triple hybrid between M. aquatica and M. spicata (the latter itself is a hybrid between M. suaveolens and M. longifolia). Most of the annual production of more than 3,000 tons of oil comes from the USA.

Parts Used: Fresh or dried leaves (Menthae piperitae folium) and the essential oil obtained by steam distillation (Menthae piperitae aetheroleum).

Therapeutic Category: Leaves: choleretic, carminative; oil: disinfectant, cooling, carminative, cholagogue, spasmolytic.

Uses and Properties: The product can be used to help support digestive disorders and to help mask the unpleasant taste of other herbs. It is specifically employed in case of spastic complaints (including irritable bowel syndrome), ailments of the gallbladder and bile duct, and catarrhs of the respiratory tract. The oil is a disinfectant and mildly anaesthetic, and can be used topically to help support pain, including headache and mucosal inflammations of the mouth.

Preparation and Dosage: Leaves are used as tea and the oil taken orally (daily dose 6 - 12 drops) or as part of proprietary supplements and in slow-release formulations to help support spastic colon. A few drops of oil may be rubbed into affected parts (forehead and temples in the case of tension headaches).

Active Ingredients: The activity is ascribed mainly to the essential oil components, which include menthol (30-40% or more), (-)-menthone (15-25%), (-)-menthyl acetate (up to 10%), (-)-menthofuran (preferably less than 5%, because it has an unpleasant smell). Carvone an pulegone should preferably be absent.

Health Effects: Animal studies and clinical trials support most of the claimed therapeutic benefits listed above. The cooling effect is due to the presence of menthol which affects cold receptors.

Status: Pharm.; Comm. E+; ESCOP 3; WHO clinical studies+.

Although all the species of mint are liable to be used in health, Peppermint is generally preferred since it has a stronger odor, a more aromatic taste, is richer in essential oil and has more active stimulant properties. It is regarded as an anti-spasmodic; is prescribed in every case where there are serious nervous disorders, in headaches, colics, nervous vomiting, nervous tympanitis, hiccups, flatulence and periodic discharges with nervous symptoms.

It can be useful in all cases of debility when it is a matter of fortifying organs, rallying strength, stimulating a function or facilitating execptoration. There are quite a lot of preparations of mint. The infusion has been tried for aenemia, chlorosis and Asian cholera.

Externally, it is used in lotions and fomentations as a resolvent for bruises and skin rashes. The syrup and distilled water are used for vomiting in children, and for joint pain. The powder has been administered for nervous fevers and the pulp for swelling in the breasts. The alcoholate can be used to help support friction in cases of chronic joint pain, and the essence, for toothache and swollen gums. Dioscorides claimed that mint was an aphrodisiac.
