Both the flower and root of Primrose can be used to support health, and have a variety of uses in traditional health. The flower serves as a herb that can be used for headache, nerve pain, and tremors, and can be used as a "heart tonic" for sensations of dizziness and cardiac insufficiency. Primrose root is taken for whooping cough, asthma, joint pain, and nerve pain.

The German Commission E Monographs, the bible of clinically-established herbal information, concluded that primrose flower is a potential way to help support symptoms of catarrhs of the respiratory tract. They also confirm its widely touted ability as a secretolytic and expectorant.

A native of North America, evening primrose is now widely naturalized across Europe and is commonly found in hedgerows as a garden escapee. Evening primrose leaves were traditionally tried to help support asthma and digestive disorders. However, during the 1970s, researchers identified that the seeds are rich in an essential fatty acid call gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) that is vital for good health.

GLA is a building block for various prostaglandins, which are hormone-like chemicals vital for a number of bodily systems. A normal, healthy metabolism will convert commonly occurring cis-linoleic acid (found in leafy vegetables and seed oils) into GLA, but this process can be affected by poor diet and high cholesterol levels. Some individuals are also unable to complete this metabolic pathway, a failure that has been inked to disorders such as chronic psoriasis and joint pain. With evening primrose oil able to fill the gap, there has been a massive growth in sales and the plant has become a major cash crop in many parts of the world. Typically, evening primrose oil contains around 9% GLA, although in recent years plant breeders have worked hard to develop strains that will yield even more.

GLA is also reputed to ease menstrual and support menopausal women, strengthen the circulatory system, combat certain sorts of skin irritations and boost the immune system. Research suggests that it can ease irritable bowel syndrome where symptoms are associated with the menstrual cycle. In clinical trials, dosages of 3-5 g a day have been commonplace, although for general use most manufacturers recommend 300-1000 mg. Evening primrose oil can also be used straight on the skin for skin irritations and similar problems. Because evening primrose oil also helps to normalize liver function, it can be useful to counter the symptoms of a hangover on "the morning after".

In the 1980s, GLA was also found in borage and blackcurrant seed oils.

• Fights dizziness, whooping cough, asthma, nerve pain, skin complaints and much more.
Evening Primrose contains high levels of a polyunsaturated fatty acid known as gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is taken for the symptomatic support of skin concerns, especially itchy and irritated skin (but also in cases of pruritus and skin inflammations). It is said to have benefits in irritable bowel syndrome, support of menopausal women, circulatory and rheumatic disorders.

Evening Primrose
Oenothera biennis L.

Family: Onagraceae.

Other Names: Onagre bisannuelle (French); Gemeine Nachtkerze (German); enothera (Italian).

Description: Evening primrose is a biennial or short-lived perennial forming a basal rosette of leaves in the first year, and a sturdy flowering stalk (up to 1.5 m) in the second-year. The large, yellow, tubular flowers open in the evening and are pollinated by moths. Numerous minute seeds are produced in oblong seed capsules (up to 150,000 seeds per plant).

Origin: North America (from Canada to Florida and Mexico). The plant has become a roadside weed in many parts of the world and an important cash crop for the production of evening primrose oil. The total world production of the seed is estimated at 4000 tons.

Parts Used: Seeds (seed oil; Oenotherae biennis oleum).

Therapeutic Category: Nutritional supplement (support for itchy and irritated skin).

Preparation and Dosage: A daily dose of 2 - 3 g is recommended (sometimes as much as 3 - 5 g of oil per day). Capsules are available that contain 0.5 g of oil corresponding to 40 mg of GLA.

Active Ingredients: Seeds contain up to 25% oil, of which about 8-14% is GLA (the rest, 60-80% is linoleic acid).

Health Effects: GLA is one essential fatty acids required by humans to maintain normal body function, because it is a precursor of dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid and arachidonic acid, from which prostaglandins and leucotrienes derive. The latter are hormone-like substances that affect cholesterol levels, dilation of blood vessels and inflammation. Some people (about 10-20% of the population), especially those with neurodermatitis, are apparently deficient in the enzyme that converts linoleic acid to gamma-linoleic acid. Several clinical trials have shown the efficacy of GLA in supporting skin irritations.

Notes: High levels of GLA have also been found in borage and blackcurrant seeds.

Status: Pharm.; WHO 2; clinical studies+.

Medicinal Usage

In recent years this pretty plant has become a focus of medical research. One line of investigation reveals that the plant may have an anti-clotting factor that would make it useful in the reduction of heart attacks caused by thrombosis - the blocking of a blood vessel by a blood clot.

In 1982 the distinguished British medical journal the Lancet published findings that oil of evening primrose might help people suffering from itchy and irritated skin. Another study indicated that the oil might help people suffering from other atopic problems such as asthma and headaches.

In modern herbal approaches the plant mucilage is used in cough supportives to help inhibit coughing and in external preparations to soothe skin eruptions. It is also advocated as an astringent for helping support wounds and as an antispasmodic. The seed oil has been shown to alleviate inflammations in experimental animal studies.

General Herb Information

As daylight wanes, and the evening grows cool, the shiny yellow petals of the evening primose unfurl, and it exudes a perfume that attracts the nocturnal sphinx moth, which pollinates it. By daybreak the flowers have faded, and new blossoms open the next evening.

Habitat: Dry soils; meadows; old fields, roadsides, and other waste places.

Range: A North native, evening primrose is found from Newfoundland to British Columbia, south to Texas and Florida, and west to North Dakota and Idaho.

Identification: An erect biennial herb, growing 3 - 6 feet tall from a rosette of basal leaves during the first year. A hairy stem bears alternate lance-shaped leaves. During the second year showy, yellow, four-petaled flowers (June-October), about 2 inches across, bloom in diminished light or in the dark.

Name

Oenothera biennis L. (Onagraceae). In English it is called Evening Primrose, or Primrose.

Source

Evening primrose is a New World plant, but it is closely related to the European water dropwort (Oenanthe aquatica). The seeds of both plants contain an essential oil rich in gamma linolenic acid that is sold as a food supplement.

History

Indians showed European settlers how to use the oil to help support stomach upsets and respiratory infections. Food supplement makers now promote evening primrose oil for complaints where sex hormones and prostoglandins are thought to be disordered such as premenstrual syndrome, benign breast concern, elevated cholesterol, atopic skin problem, and as a supplement capable of reducing abnormal blood clotting, weight gain, and degenerative neurologic problems, including joint pain.

Traditional Support Uses

Expectorant and stomachic

Commission E Recommendations

Primrose can be used to help support respiratory catarrh and upper respiratory tract catarrh.

Possible Effects

Evening primrose, like borage, blackcurrant, hemp oil, and oils derived from some fungi, contains a substance called gamma linolenic acid (GLA). Humans normally make GLA from linoleic acid in their diet. Patients with blood sugar level concerns, however, do not convert linoleic acid to GLA very effectively. Since the protective coating that surrounds most nerves is made partly from GLA, it is believed that nerve issues in diabetics (diabetic neuropathy) is due to this GLA deficiency.

In experimental animals with blood sugar level concerns, adding GLA to the diet corrects the nerve damage. Gamma linolenic acid is also important because it is converted into hormones called 'prostoglandins.' These hormones regulate multiple body functions and play a very important part in regulating the inflammatory response (such as the swelling of a joint, or even the swelling that occurs after an ankle sprain).

The process of converting GLA into prostoglandins starts with a reaction called "desaturation" of linoleic acid to form GLA. Many factors can interfere with this conversion, including aging, blood sugar levels concerns or stress (high levels of adrenalin), to name just a few. GLA formation is also blocked when the diet contains excessive amounts of unsaturated fatty acids (the kind found in semi-solid fats such as some kinds of margarine and cooking oil) in the diet.

No one knows for certain whether prostaglandin deficiencies are the cause of complaints such as premenstrual tension and breast discomfort, and clinical trials have failed to help support claims that GLA supplementation would increase immunity or make platelets less sticky. However, GLA supplements clearly do improve some types of neurologic problems, and clinical trials evaluating the other claims are ongoing.

Dosage

In clinical trials, patients have been given doses of 1 to 3 grams per day, but the safe and potentially effective range, if there is one, is not known. Commission E recommends a daily dose of 2-4 grams of drug.

Traditionally, Periwinkle can be used to help support a variety of complaints. Native Indians used the juice from Periwinkle leaves to help support wasp stings. Hawaiians boiled the plant to make a poultice to help support bleeding. In China, and Central and South America, it can be used as an astringent and diuretic. They also used it to help support symptoms of coughs, lung congestion, inflammation and sore throat. In the Caribbean, an extract from the flowers was used to make a solution to help support eye irritation and infections. The Europeans used Periwinkle as a folk supportive for helping support healthy blood sugar levels, but they also called it the magic plant, because they thought it could ward off evil spirits. The French called it the "violet of the sorcerers."

Rosy Periwinkle produces 70 known alkaloids, some of which can be used for the potential to help support symptoms of childhood immunity, lymphatic system issues, testicular health issues and immunity deficiencies. Taken as a daily supplement, it improves the blood supply to the brain, can increase oxygen and glucose for the brain to use, can help avoid abnormal coagulation of blood, and it raises brain levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Externally, Rosy Periwinkle leaves poultices can be used to help support wasp stings and eye inflammation, and to help support bleeding. Ointments can be used externally as well.

Vinpocetine is a chemical substance synthesized from vincamine, a natural constituent found in the leaves of Vinca minor (lesser periwinkle).

Vinpocetine appears to have antioxidant, blood flow enhancing, and other effects that may be beneficial to brain function. Research, primarily in Europe, has investigated these possible benefits in people with memory disorders .

Vinpocetine is not an essential nutrient, so no deficiencies are possible, however, when given by intravenous injection, Vinpocetine has been reported to improve some biochemical measures of brain function in heart patients. A controlled trial found intravenous vinpocetine can support healthy brain function.

The flower serves as a herb that can be used for headache, nerve pain, and tremors, and can be used as a "heart tonic" for sensations of dizziness and cardiac insufficiency. The gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) in Evening Primrose Oil also reduces the stickiness of blood-clotting agents and helps reduce clots from developing. Evening primrose oil (EPO), comes from the seeds of the evening primrose plant. Like black currant seed oil and borage oil, EPO contains gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a fatty acid that the body converts to a hormone-like substance called prostaglandin E1 (PGE1).

In a study of 79 patients who took a dose of 4 grams of the product a day, serum cholesterol was lowered by 31 percent. There are several preliminary unpublished studies in obese individuals that shows that Primrose Oil may support healthy blood pressure levels. Further, there are studies that show it has lowered plasma platelet aggregation, thus reducing the risk factor for heart health issues.

Garlic is a powerful disinfectant. It detoxifies the body and supports all body functions, especially the immune system. Garlic purifies the blood, strengthens blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. It aids in the support for arteriosclerosis, joint pain, coughs, colds, heart disorders, digestive problems, insomnia, liver problems, stuffy/runny nose, irritations and yeast infections. This herb contains allicin, allyl disulphides, calcium, copper, essential oils, germanium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sulphur, unsaturated aldehydes, zinc, vitamins A, B1, B2 and C.

Garlic is the best anti-clotting herb. It contains nine anticoagulant compounds. It is a major herb for heart attack avoidance because of its blood-thinning effect and its ability to help control high blood pressure. These same effects also help avoid strokes.

Garlic is mentioned in the Bible and the Talmud. Hippocrates, Galen, Pliny the Elder, and Dioscorides all mention the potential use of garlic for the support of many complaints, including bloating, respiratory problems, poor digestion, and low energy. Its use in China was first mentioned in A.D. 510. Louis Pasteur studied the disinfectant action of garlic in 1858.

The sulfur compound allicin, produced by crushing or chewing fresh garlic or by taking powdered garlic products with allicin potential, in turn produces other sulfur compounds: ajoene, allyl sulfides, and vinyldithiins.

Garlic inhibits platelet stickiness (aggregation) and helps support the increase fibrinolysis, which results in a slowing of blood coagulation. It is mildly antihypertensive and may have antioxidant activity. Garlic's cardiovascular supportive effects were illustrated in a four-year clinical trial on people 50-80 years old with atherosclerosis. It was found that consumption of 900 mg of a standardized garlic supplement helped support the reduction of arterial plaque formation by 5-18 percent.

Ginkgo biloba is used to help relieve symptoms of a stroke. It helps to avoid blood clots from developing and helps support the increase blood flow to the brain. This herb has also been shown to inhibit free-radical formation.

Ginkgo biloba is the world's oldest living species of tree. Individual trees live as long as 1,000 years. Ginkgo grows most predominantly in the southern and eastern United States, southern France, China, and Korea. The leaves of the tree are used in modern herbal approaches.

Ginkgo is widely used in Europe to help support complications of heart health issues, including memory and balance problems, vertigo and disturbed thought processes. Many studies show that this herb increases blood flow to the brain.

Ginkgo also helps reduce fragility of the capillaries. (Capillaries are the tiny blood vessels that fan throughout your body.) This can help avoid hemorrhagic stroke. European physicians often prescribe an extract of ginkgo leaves for stroke survivors. Many doctors say that ginkgo fights the stroke and, more importantly, it is nontoxic.

The medical benefits of Ginkgo biloba are attributed primarily to two groups of active constituents: the ginkgo flavone glycosides and the terpene lactones. Ginkgo flavone glycosides, which typically make up approximately 24 percent of the extract, are primarily responsible for antioxidant activity and may mildly inhibit platelet aggregation (stickiness). These two actions may help ginkgo biloba prevent circulatory issues, such as atherosclerosis, and support the brain and central nervous system.

Hawaiians boiled the plant to make a poultice to help support bleeding. In China, and Central and South America, it can be used as an astringent and diuretic.

Ginkgo biloba is used to releive symptoms of a stroke.

Ginkgo is widely used in Europe to help supportcomplications of heart health issues, including memory and balance problems, vertigo and disturbed thought processes.
