Coltsfoot Compositae TUSSILAGO FARFARA (kuan dong hua)

Coltsfoot has a flowering stem with star-like, yellow flowers and broad green leaves. It originated in Europe and Asia and now grows extensively in North America.

Coltsfoot History

Coltsfoot's botanical name Tussilago farfara indicates its usage, tussive meaning cough and farfara, to go. In other words, dispels coughs. Another name was Filius ante patrem or "the son before the father," as the flowers appear first, then die off before the leaves grow. The herb has long been used as a symbol of herbal health and enjoys an old reputation as a herb that can be used for lung problems, including asthma and coughs, being included in a mixture of herbs, which was smoked. Sticks of coltsfoot rock are still sold for the support for coughs. In China the flowers are preferred, while in Europe the leaves are used exclusively since it is thought there is a higher proportion of toxic constituents in the flowers.

• Traditionally used to help support jaundice, dysentery, sunburn and more.
This well-known evergreen climber, with its dark-green, glossy, angular leaves is too familiar to need detailed description. It climbs by means of curious fibres resembling roots, which shoot out from every part of the stem, and are furnished with small disks at the end, which adapt themselves to the roughness of the bark or wall against which the plant grows and to which it clings firmly. These fibres on meeting with soil or deep crevices become true roots, obtaining nourishment for the plant, but when dilated at the extremity, they merely serve to attach the stems and do not absorb nourishment from the substance to which they adhere. The Ivy is therefore liable to injure the trees around which it twines by abstracting the juices of the stem.

When it attains the summit of a tree or wall, it grows out in a bushy form, and the leaves instead of being five-lobed and angular, as they are below, become ovate, with entire margins. Ivy only produces flowers when the branches get above their support, the flowering branches being bushy and projecting a foot or two from the climbing stems, with flowers at the end of every shoot.

The flowers of Common Ivy are small, in clusters of nearly globular umbels and of a yellowish-green, with five broad and short petals and five stamens. They seldom open before the latter end of October, and often continue to expand till late in December. Though they have little or no scent, they yield abundance of nectar and afford food to bees late in the autumn, when they can get no other.

The berries, which do not become ripe till the following spring, provide many birds, especially wood pigeons, thrushes and blackbirds with food during severe winters. When ripe, they are about the size of a pea, black or deep purple, smooth and succulent, and contain two to five seeds. They have a bitter and nauseous taste, and when rubbed, an aromatic and slightly resinous odour.

Common Ivy is typically used to help support symptoms for jaundice and dysentry. Externally, it is an excellent aid to supporting the pain and irritation of sunburn.

Common Ivy
Hedera helix L.

Family: Araliaceae.

Other Names: Lierre grimpant, lierre commun (French); Efeu (German); edera (Italian); hiedra (Spanish).

Description: A woody climber with creeping stems that cling to objects by means of aerial climbing roots. Vegetative leaves are three- to five-lobed and much smaller than those of flowering stems (larger and ovate, without distinct lobes). Inconspicuous flowers are borne in spherical groups and are followed by black berries.

Origin: Western Asia and Europe (central, western and southern parts, including the Mediterranean region).

Parts Used: Leaves (Hederae folium) , sometimes the woody stems (homoeopathy).

Therapeutic Category: Expectorant, spasmolytic, secretolytic.

Uses and Properties: Extracts of dried leaves are to help support coughs (including pertussis), and chronic catarrhs of the respiratory tract. It also shows promise as an strong agent against Candida albicans and is active against bloating and molluscs. Wood extracts are mostly used as an ingredient of creams, lotions, shampoos (as emollients and for itch support in skin disorders) and topical anticellulitis products.

Active Ingredients: The leaves contain 5-8% bidesmosidic saponins of oleanolic acid, hederagenin and bayogenin, known as hederasaponins or hederacosides B to I. Of these, hederasaponin C (also known as hederacoside C) is the main compound, with levels of up to 7%. In dried leaves the more potent monodesmosidic saponines can be formed upon hydrolysis. Also present are various phenolics, and polyacetylenes, typically falcarinol, falcarinone and 11-dehydrofalcarinol. Seeds contain large amounts of saponins and are considered to be toxic to humans.

Health Effects: The expectorant properties of the saponins can be explained by an indirect stimulation of the nervus vagus in the stomach. Several double-blind placebo- controlled studies have shown efficacy in chronic obstructive coughs, with few or no side effects at doses equivalent to 200 mg of crude drug per day (children) or 400 mg (adults). The saponins (or their monodesmoside derivatives) are cytotoxic and haemolytic in higher concentrations. Falcarinol is a skin allergen and is known from other Araliaceae, including Schefflera species.

Status: Pharm.; Comm. E+; clinical studies+.

Preparation and Dosage: The recommended daily dose of ivy leaf is 0.3 g per day, or 1.5 g twice per day (depending on the source).
