• Traditionally used to help support inflammation, weak blood vessels, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, varicose veins and much more.
Oak Bark is also known by the names White Oak, Tanner's Bark, Royal Protector, English Oak, Common Oak, Green Oak, Red Oak, and Black Oak. White Oak Bark is native to England and has been naturalized in the U.S., where it is found mainly in the East. It grows as high as 100 feet and can live as long as 1,000 years. The parts of this tree used for health benefits are the bark and the galls (growths that are produced in reaction to fungi or insects). The genus name Quercus is from a Celtic word "quer," meaning "fine," and "cuea," or "tree."

The Oak tree was sacred to the Druids, and has long been a symbol of fertility and immortality. In the past, European and women wanting to get pregnant would carry an acorn as a talisman. In Nordic mythology, the Oak was associated with thunder gods as Oak groves seem to attract much lightning. To the Romans, the Oak symbolized bravery, and military heroes were often crowned with a wreath of Oak leaves. Oak can be used as a herb to help support despair and despondency. Oak trees also bear acorns, which were a staple in the Native diet. They were sometimes leached, dried and ground into flour. The Indians often gathered the acorns and stored them to ensure a continual winter food supply.

White Oak Bark was also used by Native cultures for hundreds of years as a medicine to help support wounds and intestinal problems. Its valuable, sturdy timber has led to many forests being cut down. The trees are valued in the making of cabinets, tables and other furniture. It can also be tried to tan leather. The primary chemical constituents of Oak Bark include tannins (phlobatannin, ellagitannins, gallic acid), and quercetin. Galls are even higher in tannins than the bark. White Oak also contains the minerals manganese, calcium, iron, and zinc. The high tannin content is responsible for a wide range of its activity. Tannins bind with protein of the tissues, thus making them impermeable to infections, while at the same time strengthening the tissues.

White Oak Bark is one of the strongest natural astringent herbs available. It provides not only great astringent properties, but anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties as well. White Oak Bark's astringent properties tighten tissues and strengthen blood vessels, making it ideal for helping support diarrhea, hemorrhoids and varicose veins. The blood-clotting agents active in Oak Bark are also helpful to cease nosebleeds. White Oak Bark can also be tried to help support inflammation and irritations caused by poor digestion, skin irritations, strep throat and skin problems. The common name Oak includes the species Quercus alba (White Oak), Quercus robur (English Oak, Common Oak), Quercus virens (Green Oak), Quercus petraea, Quercus rubra (Red Oak) and Quercus tinctoria (Black Oak) all of which are used interchangeably with Quercus alba.

The two principal herbs in this blend are horse chestnut and cayenne pepper, each of which has been used historically, and supported scientifically, in supporting hemorrhoids or piles. Horse chestnut helps reduce blood vessel permeability and can be useful for both varicose veins and hemorrhoids or piles. Studies done in Europe found that horse chestnut helped to increase blood flow, strengthen connective tissue, tighten up veins, and decrease redness and swelling. Cayenne pepper can be useful for facilitating blood flow, as piles are characteristic of sluggish blood flow in the area of the veins in and around the anus.

Swelling and throbbing can be reduced by the inclusion of the tonic herb, white oak bark; its bitter and astringent qualities have been valued for centuries and its ability to tighten tissues and strengthen blood vessels. Witch hazel offers further restorative properties for the tissue lining and helps reduce bleeding.

• Traditionally used to help support infection, inflammation, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, poor digestion, irritations and more.

Oak also contains the minerals manganese, calcium, iron, and zinc. The high tannin content is responsible for a wide range of its activity. Oak Bark
Quercus robur L.
(Pendunculate Oak; English Oak)

Medicinal Usage

A decoction of bark was taken for diarrhoea, varicose veins, haemorrhoids and enteritis, and as a gargle for a sore throats. Externally it was used to mend wounds and staunch bleeding. The oak gall (or oak apple) can also be used to supporthaemorrhoids, and bleeding gums. Culpeper said that "the water is found in the hollow places of oaks, is very effectual against any foul or spreading scabs."

Culinary Usage

Acorns were eaten as food in times of famine. They were roasted and ground to make a substitute coffee.

Miscellaneous

Held sacred by many pre-Christian cultures, including the Greeks, Romans, Norse and Celts, the majestic, long-lived oak was considered the most powerful of all trees and many secret rites were performed, under its spreading branches. Its association with gods of thunder like Zeus, Jupiter and Thor, probably arose from the fact that being a large tree it tended to be struck by lightning more than most. According to some experts, the word 'Druid' comes from an Indo-European root meaning 'men of oak' or 'oak knowledge'. Many early Christian churches were sited near Druidic oaks, despite (or probably because of) their pagan associations. As a symbol of inner and outer strength, the oak appears in many old customs and sayings. Even today, coupled with the saying 'great oaks from little acorns grow', it is often cited as the emblem of British strength. During the Middle Ages, oak timber was used to built furniture, houses, windmills, churches and ships, while the bark was extensively used in tanning leather. Pigs were turned out into the woods in autumn to forage on the fallen acorns. The tree was listed by Aelfric. Oak galls (ball like growths caused by the egg-laying gall wasp) yield a black ink and hair dye.

Oak bark and extracts thereof are used against acute diarrhoea and stomach cramps. It is applied externally against inflammations of the skin or mucosa, particularly of the mouth and throat, but also the genital and anal region; furthermore to help support wounds, irritated skin, and foot perspiration.

Oak, Common
Quercus robur L.

Family: Fagaceae.

Other Names: Common oak; chêne blanc (French); Stieleiche (German); quercia commune (Italian).

Description: A large deciduous tree (up to 50 m), easily recognised by the shortly stalked (almost sessile) leaves, lobed wavy leaf margins, long flowering stalks and the characteristic fruits (acorns). It is similar to sesile oak (Q. petraea), which has stalked leaves but stalkless flower clusters. In Europe, oak bark was much used in former times for tanning in the leather industry, while oak wood remains an important industrial source of tannins, especially for taste improvement in the wine and spirits industries. Other tannin sources include blackwattle bark from Acacia mearnsii {South Africa, Kenya, Brazil), bark from Schinopsis species (South America), bark from Myrica esculenta (China) and black myrobalan fruits from Terminalia chebula (India).

Origin: Europe. Commercially from eastern Europe.

Parts Used: The bark from young branches and trunks of young trees (Q. petraea, Q. robur) is harvested in spring (Quercus cortex).

Therapeutic Category: Antidiarrhoeal, astringent.

Preparation and Dosage: For internal use, about 3 g of the product are taken as a decoction. Oral rinses, gargles and compresses are prepared from 20 g of the bark in 1 litre of water. For bathing, 5 g per litre of water is used.

Active Ingredients: The main constituents in the bark are condensed tannins (up to 20%), mainly ellagitannins (such as castalagin, roburin), catechins and oligomeric proanthocyanidins.

Health Effects: Tannins non-specifically inhibit or denature proteins, such as enzymes and receptors; it is plausible to attribute disinfectant, anti-inflammatory and haemostyptic properties to tannins.

Notes: Oak galls (gallae) are especially rich in gallotannins and very astringent and are sometimes used as the main source of tannins.

Status: Traditional health; Pharm.; Comm. E+.

The bitter and astringent bark and acorns of the oak can be used to support health. In addition to the astringency, oak is also reputed to be antiseptic and hemostatic. The bodily systems affected by oak are the spleen, the stomach, and the intestines. With up to 15-20% tannins, oak bark can be used to help support diarrhea, dysentery, and bleeding. Externally, the bark or leaves are either boiled or steamed and applied, topically, to help support bruises, injuries, varicosities, swollen tissues, and bleeding.
