The oils and tannins in Sage have astringent, antiseptic, and irritant properties. It is therefore an important herb in medications for mouth sores, mouth irritations, and sore throat medications (make teas and use as a mouth rinse - try a tea with equal parts Chamomile and Sage). For sore throats, try mixing a Sage tea with apple cider vinegar and salt for gargling. Sage is reported to have moisture-drying properties, and can be used as an antiperspirant. It can also be used as a compress on cuts and wounds. Clinical studies have also shown that it can lower blood sugar. Try making capsules out of dried leaves as a substitute for teas for internal use.

As an astringent, Sage can be used as a refreshing after-shave, and there is some indication that an infusion of it can be used to subtly color silver hair. As with many of the other herbs, Sage tea can also be tried in a tea for digestive problems and flatulence.

Vinpocetine, derived from the periwinkle plant, is another powerful memory enhancer. It improves blood flow to the brain and improves the brain's use of oxygen. It also helps with concentration.

There are two classes of active compounds in periwinkle-alkaloids and tannins. The major alkaloid is known as vincamine. A closely related semisynthetic derivative of vincamine most widely used for health is known as ethyl-apovincaminate or vinpocetine. It has vasodilating, blood thinning, and memory-enhancing actions. It has been shown in double-blind studies to help alleviate memory issues, in which the arteries supplying blood to the brain develop atherosclerotic plaques. A double-blind study found that vincamine can help people with Memory Loss. Vinpocetine has also been found to help avoid the decline in short-term memory induced by the anti-anxiety benzodiazepine drug flunitrazepam in one preliminary study.

Gingko biloba, which has been used in Eastern cultures for thousands of years, is perhaps the most well-known and one of the most potent "memory herbs." It works by increasing the blood flow to the brain, by dilating the blood vessels and increasing oxygen supply. However, it isn't an instant solution as it can take a few weeks to start seeing results. It also gets rid of free radicals that can damage brain cells.

You don't have to be middle-aged or older for ginkgo to help increase brainpower! Recently, there has been much speculation that ginkgo may act as a "smart nutrient," improving intelligence in healthy, young people.

At the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, 60 students participated in a 30-day double-blind, placebo- controlled clinical trial, in which they were given a battery of neuropsychological tests before and after taking ginkgo. Results indicated that the students who took the ginkgo, showed a significant improvement in the speed at which they processed information and retained it.

In another placebo- controlled, double-blind study at the Division of Psychology, University of Northumbria, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, 20 students were given a cognitive assessment on which they were tested for attention, accuracy, speed of memory and quality of memory. They received 120 mg, 240 mg and 360 mg of a standardized extract of ginkgo or a placebo over a six-hour time period. The results showed that the students who received 240 mg and 360 mg of ginkgo biloba extract had a sustained improvement in attention, even six hours after they had received the supplement.

No matter what your age, Ginkgo Biloba helps to sharpen your mental performance, increase your concentration and short-term memory, boost your energy levels and slow down the aging process.

In a recent study, subjects who took sage performed significantly better than those who didn't on a word recall test. Although the exact mechanism behind this isn't fully clear, experts believe sage might increase levels of a chemical that helps transmit messages in the brain. Since this is also the same chemical that is lacking in those suffering from brain function issues, the possible use of sage to help support this is being examined.

In a double-blind study of people with memory loss, supplementing with sage for four months resulted in a significant improvement in cognitive function, compared with a placebo. Although it is not known for sure how sage improves cognitive function, it appears to have an effect on acetylcholine, one of the chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

Sage is a popular supportive against gingivitis and mucosal inflammation of the mouth and throat. It is a digestive health product to help support upset stomachs, flatulence and diarrhoea and is considered effective as antisudorific to help support night sweats and excessive perspiration. It has been used traditionally as an antidiabetic. Sage is best known as a culinary herb.

Sage
Salvia officinalis L.

Family: Lamiaceae.

Other Names: Sauge officinale, sauge commune (French); Echter Salbei, Gartensalbei (German); salvia (Italian); salvia officinal (Spanish).

Description: Sage is a perennial shrublet (up to 0.6 m) with square stems bearing opposite pairs of grey, rough-textured leaves and attractive purplish blue flowers. Closely related, with similar uses are S. fruticosa (= S. triloba), known as trilobed or Greek sage (the leaves are lobed at their base) and S. lavandulifolia (a source of health-supporting oil).

Origin: Eastern Mediterranean region and southern Europe (S. officinalis, S. lavandulifolia) ; Italy to the Middle East (S. fruticosa). Commercial cultivation mainly in eastern Europe, Asia, USA and South Africa.

Parts Used: Dried leaves (Salviae folium, Salviae trilobae folium).

Therapeutic Category: Antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative.

Preparation and Dosage: Daily doses equivalent to 4 - 6 g of the dried herb or up to 0.3 g of essential oil are used for internal use. For gargles and rinses, use 2.5 g of herb or 3 drops of oil in 100 mL water.

Active Ingredients: Essential oil (up to 3.6%) rich in alpha-thujone (usually the major compound) and beta-thujone (together up ro 60%), with smaller amounts of camphor, 1,8-cineole and other monoterpenes. Also present are phenolic acids (6%) such as rosmarinic acid (Labiate "tannin"), various flavonoids, diterpenoids such as carnosol (= picrosalvin; bitter value 14,000) and rosmanol, together with triterpenes (oleanic acid and derivatives). The oil of S. fruticosa is low in thujone (up to 7%); that of S. lavandulifolia is practically thujone-free.

Health Effects: Experimental evidence supports the claimed antispasmodic, antisudorific, and disinfectant effects. The neurotoxicity of the oil is ascribed to thujone so that the internal use of S. officinalis and its products is restricted.

Warning: Do not use internally in large amounts or for prolonged periods.

Status: Traditional health; Pharm.; Comm. E+; ESCOP 2.

Cut Sage Tea Leaves

LOVE this tea! I keep the bag in my cup the entire time I'm drinking it. I never add sugar or anything except lots of lemon juice (fresh-squeezed...about 2 - 3 tsp.). I don't normally like the taste of tea but this is very mild. Will be ordering a lot more of this since I'm almost out.

• Helps sore throat, tonsilitis, yeast infections, hair loss, and more.
Medicinal Usage

Sage contains vitamin A, vitamins B1, and B2, niacin, vitamin C, potassium, calcium and iron.

Sage can be been used as a folk supportive for centuries, serving as a digestive and nerve tonic, a gargle for a sore throats and bleeding gums, an antiseptic in vaginal infections, a poultice for insect bites, and a supporter of symptoms for diarrhea. Sage is an astringent, tonic, antiseptic, and antispasmodic. Sage tea will dry up milk flow, fight perspiration about two hours after drinking, and support stomach aches.

The oil contains alpha- and beta- thujones (also found in wormwoods and yarrow), cineole, borneol, and other components. Like rosemary, sage extracts are strong antioxidants (preservatives). The essential oil suppresses fish odors.

General Herb Information

The genus Salvia contains over 700 species distributed throughout the world. Common garden sage, S. officinalis, a Mediterranean native, is a shrub growing to 2 1/2 feet high, with white woolly stems and grayish-green leaves with a texture reminding one of reptile skin.

The oblong, entire or slightly toothed, leaves are about 1 1/2 to 3 inches long and about one-half inch wide. The whorls of white, pinkish, or blue-violet one-half inch long flowers occur in racemes, blooming in May to June. Salvias have two stamens with two-celled anthers, connecting to a point at the summit of a filament. On each stamen the anterior anther is not fully developed, forming an appendage bees hit when they enter the flower for nectar. This tips the fully developed anther, rubbing pollen into the hairs on the insect's thorax. Thus pollen is distributed to adjacent flowers.

There are a number of cultivars. 'Tricolor' has variegated white leaves with purple margins; 'Purpurea' has purple leaves; 'Albiflori has white flowers; 'Icterina' possesses beautiful golden yellow leaves; 'Holt's Mammoth' has large robust leaves.

Sage can be propagated by seeds, cuttings, layering, or root divisions of older plants. Seeds germinate within three weeks and should be sown to a depth of one-half inch. Resulting seedlings should be spaced six to twelve inches apart. Plants from seed tend to vary in size and color. One to four pounds of seed will sow an acre. Most of the cultivars should be propagated from stem cuttings taken in the spring. Tips can be layered in September then removed from the parent plant and transplanted the following spring. Fully mature plants should be spaced at two-foot intervals.

Sage will grow in almost any soil but requires good drainage, a fair amount of nitrogen, and full sun. It flourishes on a heavy, moist soil but under such complaints will most likely winterkill in the North. Where temperatures dip below 0°F, sage should be mulched in winter months. A pH between 6.2 and 6.4 is best for sage, though it will grow in a pH range from 5 to 8. First-year plants from seed are slow to mature, producing only a tenth of fully matured plants. An acre has yielded up to 2,000 pounds of dried herb.

Weather may affect the color of the dried leaf in a given season. A wet season may produce leaves of a greenish color, whereas a dry season will give grayer leaves. You should pick leaves carefully by hand just before the plant comes into bloom and later in the summer after the leaves have fully matured. Leaves may blacken if not dried quickly under a steady air flow.

Sage is best known as a flavoring for poultry stuffings, sausages, and commercial ground meats. Fresh or dried leaves enhance lamb or pork dishes. It's good in cheeses - try a few leaves in a toasted cheese sandwich. Use in soups or by itself for teas. The Dutch used to trade one pound of sage to the Chinese for four pounds of tea.

Sage is also known by the names Garden Sage, Red Sage, and Dalmation Sage. Sage is grown extensively in its native Mediterranean region (but now also grows in North America), where it is valued for both its culinary and rejuvenateth benefits. Many Italians eat the leaves with bread and butter as part of a healthy diet. More than 500 species grow around the world. The plant is highly astringent. A member of the mint family, the name Sage is derived from the Latin "salvere," meaning "to be in good health." Growing Sage in a Medieval garden was a sign of prosperity. It was also a sign that if the plant flourished, the woman ruled the house. The parts of this plant used for health benefits are the above ground portions.

Sage has an antispasmodic action which reduces tension in smooth muscle, and it can be used in a steam inhalation for asthma attacks. It is an excellent supportive for helping to remove mucous congestion and for checking or avoiding secondary infection. It may be taken as a carminative to help support griping and other symptoms of indigestion, and is also of value in supporting dysmenorrhea and menstrual irregularity or amenorrhea. Its bitter component stimulates upper digestive secretions, intestinal mobility, bile flow, and pancreatic function, while the volatile oil has a carminative and helping to stimulate effect on the digestion.

The primary chemical constituents of Sage include essential oil (thujone, borneol, cineol, camphor, pinene), bitter principle (picrosalvine), flavonoids, tannin, phenolic acid (rosmarinic, caffeic, labiatic), phytoestrogens, and resin. There also seems to be a more general relaxant effect, so that the plant is suitable in supporting nervousness, excitability and dizziness. It helps to fortify a generally debilitated nervous system. Sage also deals effectively with throat infections, dental abscesses, infected gums, and mouth irritations. It can also be applied to external wounds. The essential oil, heated in a vaporizer, will disinfect sick-rooms.

Sage also has an astringent action due to its relatively high tannin content and can be used in supporting infantile diarrhea. Its antiseptic action is of value where there is intestinal infection. Rosmarinic acid contributes to the herb's anti-inflammatory activity. As a gargle, it will aid in supporting laryngitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis and quinsy. It reduces sweating when taken internally, and may be used to reduce the production of breast milk. Sage tends to have a drying effect, and can even be used to help support excessive saliva production in those with central nervous system disorders. Extracts of Sage have antioxidant properties; they act as a preservative, which probably explains Sage's wide use as a meat seasoning for centuries. Sage can also be used externally as a cosmetic to darken the hair.

Taken internally, Sage is above all a tonic and stomachic. It is used in preparing a great many aromatic alcoholates and other compound drugs.

It can be used to help support digestive complaints. Infusions in water have been used externally for bruises, esehymoses, oedema, articulary obstructions in the gums and aphtha; it is used in baths for skin rashes and skin problems; in fumigations for joint pain and articulary pains.

An evergreen plant of the mint family, the sage (Salvia officinalis), native to southern Europe and one of the most important health herbs of antiquity, was dedicated to the Greek Zeus, and the Roman Jupiter. Its botanical name is derived from the Latin salvus - safe, so called for its reputed rejuvenating power.

Throughout medieval Europe and England, long before the importation of Chinese tea, a tea made from sage was a daily beverage, not only because when sweetened with honey and mixed with milk it was a pleasant stimulant, but also because it was believed that a daily intake of sage was a panacea for the support of many complaints. Accordingly, there is the old medieval proverb: Why should a man die whilst sage grows in his garden.

Sage was one of the chief health herbs of the Middle Ages; taken internally it was considered good for the liver, for breeding blood in the body, the best food for the brain; an excellent strengthener of the muscles, and a tonic for stomach, heart, and nerves. It can be used as a herb that can be used for ague, palsies, fevers and as a protection against the plague.

An infusion of sage taken as a gargle was used to whiten the teeth and strengthen the gums. It was also considered a supportive for laryngitis, and in the form of antiseptic washes and compresses, was applied to bruises and sprains.

Sage tea is still used today as an old-fashioned gargle and stomach tonic. Sage can also be used extensively as a kitchen herb for flavoring soups and sauces and as a condiment for sausages and other meat products. A well known cheddar cheese, called sage cheese, is made by mixing green sage leaves into the curd before pressing.

Although sage is known in North America primarily as a flavoring for food, this perennial herb with gray-green aromatic leaves has a long history of medical use, especially in Europe. Sage is a member of the mint family and native of the Mediterranean region. Its scientific name, Salvia, comes from the Latin word for "to mend." At various times, sage was regarded as a virtual panacea. Commission E doesn't consider sage a panacea, but does verify its usefulness.

Potential Health Benefits

Commission E recommends sage leaf and preparations derived from sage leaves for helping support inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose and throat. Sage can also be used for helping support dyspepsia and for drying up excessive perspiration. In Germany, a sage-based commercial preparation called "Salvysat Burger" is marketed as an antiperspirant.

Scientific Evidence

Sage contains tannins whose astringent properties help account for its use in Germany as support for sore throat, bleeding gums, and canker sores. In food preparation, sage, like rosemary, has antioxidants that help keep food from going rancid. Sage's powerful taste and smell come chiefly from camphor, one of its prime constituents.

Commission E, without citing sources, credits sage with having disinfectant powers. Sage may help support healthy blood sugar levels as well. A 1950 study published in Germany reported that blood sugar levels in test subjects were cut in half when they took liquid sage decoctions on an empty stomach. More study is needed to investigate this encouraging possibility.

How to Use the Herb

For internal use: Commission E's recommended daily dosage is 4-6 grams of dried sage, 2-6 drops of essential oil, 2.5-7.5 grams of a liquid extract, or 1.5-3.0 grams of liquid extract.

For external use: in a gargle or mouthwash Commission E recommends 2.5 grams of the herb; for an infusion; 2-3 drops of essential oil in 100 milliliters of water; for an alcoholic extract, 5 grams in 1 glass of water.

Sage is an evergreen sub-shrub, though its leaves are not necessarily green. Some varieties have gray or gray-green downy leaves, and one has deep purple leaves and exceptionally pretty mauve-blue flowers. The flavor, which has faint overtones of camphor, is very strong in some types. The plant is a native of the Mediterranean region.

History

Sage, which takes its name from the Latin salvere, "to save," has a long history as a useful plant. It was much in evidence in Roman times, again for health purposes, but was well established mainly as a culinary herb in medieval England.

Characteristics

The plant can reach a height of 24 inches, with a spread of 18 inches. The stems are woody, and the leaves, elongated ovals, can be 2½ inches long and ¾ inch across. The flowers, which appear in midsummer, are about 1 inch long, borne on long, curving clusters.

Growing Tips

Sage likes a well-drained soil and a sunny position. It can be grown from seed planted in spring, or from tip cuttings taken under cover in summer. The plant tends to become woody and straggly, so should be renewed (by taking cuttings) every few years. Cutting off the stems before flowers form encourages leaf growth.

How to Use

Sage is a popular culinary herb and has an affinity with pork and cheese. It is also traditionally used with onion in stuffings.

The leaves and flowers can be used to make astringent infusions for cosmetic use in cleansers and tonics to help support oily and problem skins. It can also condition and color dark hair.

Health-wise,sage provides us with a readily available antiseptic agent, and its juice has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Smooth muscle (found in the internal organs) can be usefully relaxed by sage extracts. Sage can be taken to help control excessive lactation. Menopausal problems may respond to the estrogen-like stimulation of sage and it can be used to assist fertility and aid digestive problems.
