Ginseng has been regarded as something of a "wonder drug" for at least 5,000 years. Originating in China, where it has long been used to strengthen the vital energy, or Qi, of the body, the herb was known to Arabic physicians by the ninth century. Ginseng was mentioned by Marco Polo in the 13th century and introduced into modern Europe in the 17th century when a delegation from the King of Siam visited Louis XIV at Versailles and presented him with a root of "gintz-aen".

Ginseng has always been an expensive and highly prized herb that was ideally gathered in the wild using roots that were several years old. Today, most ginseng is cultivated and it is an important cash crop. Ginseng is rich in steroidal compounds which are very similar to human sex hormones, hence its reputation as an aphrodisiac.

The Chinese believe it is best suited to the elderly, preferring other energy tonics for those under 40, while many herbalists regard it as more suitable for men than women since it raises yang energy. The Chinese also believe it acts on the lungs and spleen and so ginseng can be helpful during recovery from chest problems such as asthma, and digestive disorders.

As a general tonic, ginseng is ideally taken for a month in the autumn when the weather is changing from hot summer to cold winter and the body needs to adapt to the new environment. Of course, ginseng can be taken whenever there are problems due to tiredness and overwork.

Panax Ginseng is also known by the names Korean Ginseng, Asian Ginseng, Asiatic Ginger, and Chinese Ginseng. Panax Ginseng is a deciduous perennial shrub whose fleshy root requires 4-6 years of cultivation to reach maturity. Its name comes from the Chinese "jen shen," which means "man root," so-named because some roots have limb-like branches resembling arms and legs. Because the root has a human-like shape, it is considered by Orientals to be an overall body tonic.

Traditionally, the wild root was consumed to vitalize, strengthen, and rejuvenate the entire body. Widely cultivated, Panax Ginseng is now used as a natural fighter, restorative supportive and valued for its adaptogenic properties.

Used for centuries in China, Panax Ginseng was believed to be an anti-aging herb. Today, Ginseng is a favorable herb because of its potential ability to be used long-term without toxic effects on the body. Panax Ginseng contains adaptogens that have been known to return the body's system levels back to normal. By equalizing the system levels in the body, Panax Ginseng has been used to lower cholesterol, balance the metabolism, increase energy levels, and help stimulate the immune system. It can also be tried to alleviate fatigue and help reduce nervousness and stress on the body. Panax Ginseng also increases oxygenation to the cells and tissues, promoting detoxification, and helping to stimulate the regeneration of damaged cells. For this reason, Panax Ginseng is the popular choice because it enhances the feeling of overall well being by stimulating the nervous system, brain, and heart, and rejuvenate healthy liver functions.

the best Ginseng I've ever used

I was prescribed Ginseng some 20 years ago by my acupuncturist. It was very potent and I haven't found anything to compare with it until now.

I was actually searching for it, but I couldn't remember the brand name. I thought TerraVita might be it so I purchased a 1 oz bottle to try. It wasn't the same, but I wasn't disappointed at all. In fact I think it's better than what I first used 20 years ago.

I work in retail and there are a lot of young ladies in the department. I have more energy than they do and I'm 52. I don't have any problems getting to sleep using TerraVita. In fact if I've had a long hard day I sometimes have a small cup of tea before going to bed and wake up bright and refreshed the next morning.

I've also lost 50 lbs since I started using it. My Doctor thinks it has helped tremendously by boosting my metabolism. I didn't go on a diet and wasn't trying to loose weight. Before I got my current job I'd already lost 20 lbs. My blood work came back even better than it's ever been (and it's always been good).

I have a cup in the morning and take a 32 oz bottle with a 1/4 tsp in it to work and have it on my breaks. I don't ever want to be without it. I order the 4 oz bottle now and I really enjoy the tea. It has a slightly bitter bite to it, but a little honey or sweetener and I think it's wonderful.

It's just simply the best Ginseng I've ever used and I can't say enough good things about it. Give it a try and I'm sure you'll agree.

Ginkgo is well-known for its use in helping to help support healthy cognitive functions of the elderly. Recent research has also shown that ginkgo protects brain cells and enhances their survival. Korean ginseng, long used in Asia to promote general health and longevity, has been associated with lower incidence of lung problems, particularly in smokers. Garlic has demonstrated modest, but significant, reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and an ability to maintain cholesterol in a healthy range.

• Traditionally used to help support fatigue, lack of energy, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, lack of concentration and more!
Siberian ginseng root is a member of the ginseng family, though it is of a different genus than other popular ginsengs such as the Panax variety. Herbalists call it an adaptogen. Its name comes from the Chinese jen shen, which means "man root," so-named because some roots have limb-like branches resembling arms and legs. Because the root has a human-like shape, it is considered by Orientals to be an overall body tonic.

The root is not harvested until it is two or more years old; the older the root, the higher its value. It is held in high esteem in China, where it has been valued for thousands of years, sometimes commanding a higher price than gold. Siberian ginseng is found in the Siberian province of Russia. Many adulterated forms of ginseng exist on the market.

Both the glandular system and the immune system benfit from regular use of Siberian ginseng root. This herb is commonly used in supporting circulation problems, low energy, fatigue, stress, anxiety, nervousness, sleeplessness/insomnia, poor digestion, and diarrhea.

Licorice Root can be used to help support coughs, digestive tract spasms, coughs, stomach inflammation, and as a tonic for the adrenals.

Both Licorice Root and Licorice Juice can be used to support health. Licorice can help speed restoration of stomach irritations. The juice can also be tried to help support liver inflammations, and, in Asian health, the root can be used to help support, diarrhea, headache, excessive thirst, sore throat, and swellings from infections. Their effectiveness for these disorders has not, however, been scientifically verified.

Licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid, which helps rejuvenate stomach irritations and soothes inflammation. It also loosens and thins mucus in the lungs and acts as a decongestant. There is some evidence that Licorice may help the body by encouraging the production of interferon.

There are several varieties of Licorice growing from southeastern Europe to southwestern Asia and Iraq. The plant was introduced to the Ancient Greeks by Scythians from the east. It has been used in Europe since the Middle Ages.

• Traditionally used to help support circulation problems, fatigue, lack of energy, stress, anxiety and problems with sleep
Name

Panax ginseng, Meyer (Araliaceae). Commonly called ginseng, Asian ginseng, and Panax quinquefolius, also known as ginseng. Other closely related species included Panax notoginseng and Panax japonicus. Eleutherococcus senticosus, referred to as Siberian ginseng, is a close relative. In French it is called Ginseng; in German, it is known both as Ginseng and Ginsengwurzel.

Source

Products labeled ginseng usually contain material from the roots of P. Ginseng or P. Quinquefolius. (Asian and ginseng). Most of the P. Ginseng sold in the United States and Europe is imported from Korea where it is grown commercially. Plants are harvested when they are from five to seven years old. Roots that have been allowed to air dry are the source of "white ginseng." Roots that are steamed for two to four hours yield "red ginseng." Red ginseng contains all the same active ingredients found in white ginseng, but some additional compounds are created during the steaming process. P. quinquefolius, which grows in the United States, is main- ly exported to China. E. senticosus is very closely related, but contains a slightly different group of active ingredients referred to as eleutherosides. The active ingredients in P. Ginseng or P. quinquefolius are called ginsenosides. Over 20 different ginsenosides have been isolated from the roots, leaves, and flowers.

History

Traditional Chinese healers have used ginseng as a restorative "tonic" since the early Han Dynasty, more than 2,000 years ago. Europeans first learned of this plant from a Jesuit missionary, Father Petrus Jartoux (1668-1720). Jartoux was working in Northern China, and he published a book containing his observations on ginseng in 1709. Inspired by what he had read, another Jesuit, Pre Joseph Francois Lafitau (1681-1746) began looking for ginseng in America. Lafitau found that the Mohawk Indians used a plant almost identical to the one described by Jartoux. Lafitau sent a sample of ginseng to Jartoux, and not long thereafter, North clipper ships (including some owned by John Jacob Astor, who also realized handsome profits shipping to China), began carrying -grown ginseng to China. Most ginseng is grown in Madison County, Wisconsin. But just to make matters more confusing, Chinese farmers have planted ginseng in China. ginseng grown in China is referred to as "Chinese white" (no relation to China White heroin!), and is generally considered to be of poor quality. Ginseng is on the endangered species list, and ginseng harvesting is under the control of the United States government.

To maintain health and to help avoid health issues. It can also be used as an aid during convalescence, to improve alertness and concentration, and generally can be used to help support fatigue. It was, and still is, especially used for the elderly, but it can also be used by the young to improve athletic performance.

Commission E Recommendations

Ginseng can be used as a tonic to reduce fatigue and debility and to improve mental concentration. It can also be used during convalescence.

Possible Effects

Ginseng's healthy actions are attributed to panaxosides and ginsenosides, which are thought to stimulate the central nervous system. These substances are present in all three varieties of ginseng: Panax ginseng (Asian ginseng), Panax quinquefolium ( ginseng), and Eleutherococcus senticosus (Siberian ginseng, a cousin of the other two).

Ginseng's benefits are more evident in people (or animals) who are, in some way, stressed. Many of the benefits are hard to classify, and ultimately a new word "adaptogen," was coined to described them. There is research suggesting that ginseng can improve the ability of young athletes to run, of middle-aged men to work harder, and of elderly subjects to do arithmetic. Experimental animals supported with ginseng become resistant (though not immune) to germs, lack of oxygen, and even X-ray irradiation.

The active ingredients, the ginsenosides, have two seemingly conflicting actions that could explain all of these actions: they are antioxidants, but they also stimulate production of nitric oxide. The antioxidant effects are probably what protect the heart and brain against the effects of aging. The other benefits may derive from ginseng's effects on nitric oxide production. Nitric oxide is a free radical, but not all free radicals are bad. In fact, low concentrations of free radicals are necessary for normal body function. Nitric oxide molecules can be used to send messages from one nerve to another and from nerves to muscles and blood vessels. Increasing the amount of nitric oxide can cause blood vessels to dilate, and possibly increase blood flow to the brain. Increased nitric oxide production may also explain why ginseng is praised as an aphrodisiac. The nerves that support healthy performance contain nitric oxide.

Potential Health Benefits

Commission E tested the dried root of Panax ginseng, the form of the herb native to Asia. Researchers endorsed ginseng's value as a "tonic for invigoration and fortification in times of fatigue and debility and declining work and concentration, also during convalescence." In short, it's a pick-me-up and stress-buster. Some health practitioners employ ginseng to help support chronic fatigue syndrome and melancholy.

How to Use the Herb

You can chew bits of the whole root, although it's bitter-tasting, or take ginseng in tablets, in sweetened teas, as a powdered root, or in a liquid extract. Commission E used cut root for teas and powders and recommends 1-2 grams per day.

Ginseng - from the Chinese words for "man root," because the root resembles the shape of the human body - springs from the forest primeval. Originally harvested in the wild in North America and East Asia, it was used in traditional Asian health as a panacea: a herb with many uses. Today, ginseng is grown commercially, notably in Wisconsin, for export to Asia and can be used in many parts of the world as a tonic. Candies, soft drinks, and other snacks fortified with ginseng are unlikely to have enough ginseng to be medically active.

So many claims have been made for ginseng for so many years that there must be something to its story. Countless laboratory studies, and some very reputable clinical trials, suggest regular use may very well increase feelings of strength and well-being, improve mental performance, particularly in the elderly and in individuals who are already pathologically stressed (from a health problem or from a stressful situation). Epidemiologic studies suggesting improved immunity in ginseng-users are also encouraging, though in need of much more confirmation. Consumers should be sure to buy products containing standardized amounts of ginsenosides (at least 4 percent).

How to Take Ginseng

In general, 15 to 20 drops of the traditional 33 percent liquid extracts can be taken 2 to 3 times a day. Alternatively, 20 to 30 drops of the glycerin-based liquid extract can be taken 3 to 4 times a day.

For those needing a stronger supportive, tablets and capsules are the preferred form. For most users a standardized extract taken at a dose of 100 to 200 mg daily is adequate. Higher doses can also be taken but professional advice should be sought. A high dose regime should not be taken on a long-term basis because the body will become tolerant to its effects.

Another way to take ginseng is in the phytosome form. This process makes the herb highly absorbable by mixing itwith a fatty substance called phosphatidylcholine. A 50 mg dose of ginseng phytosome is probably the strongest ginseng extract available.

The ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is an herb with a forked root, native to China and North America. In the Far East, the juice of this aromatic root is considered the ultimate elixir of life and a supporter of symptoms for all the ills of mankind. The plant itself is a Chinese symbol of strength, vigor, long life and clear judgment. Ginseng root juice is used in Japan as a potent tonic and prolonger of life; in India, as a herb that can be used for malaria. The ginseng crop on the North continent has little or no domestic usefulness, but for years has been one of the most important exports to China and other countries of the Far East. In the United States ginseng is used only as a demulcent in a few skin ointments.

Ginseng is a humble looking woodland plant credited with astonishing powers. It has been used in China for 5,000 years. Native to the dense mountain forests of Asia, ginseng is now rarely found in the wild. It is cultivated commercially in Korea, Russia, Britain, and in the USA - mostly in Wisconsin.

History

The name comes from the Chinese Jin-chen or "manlike" as the roots are rather like a crude doll man with arms, body, and legs. Panax is from the Greek panakos or panacea. It is an ancient Taoist tonic herb that can be used as a "vital essence" (qi) in Chinese health. Though introduced to Europe in the ninth century it was not taken up there until the 1950s.

Characteristics

A hardy perennial with upright stems bearing whorls of five divided leaflets. Red berries follow umbels of green-yellow flowers in spring and summer. Height 28 to 36 inches. Other species useful for health of ginseng include Panax japonicus, found wild in central areas of Japan, Eleutherococcus senticosus from Siberia, and P. quinquefolius, the ginseng which grows in Canada and the eastern United States. P. pseudo-ginseng was used by the Vietcong in the Vietnam War to support gunshot wounds.

Growing Tips

Germination is erratic. Sow seed in woodland-type soil - well-drained sandy loam with leaf mold.

Medicinal Usage

The mysterious powers of ginseng are shrouded in folk fact and fiction. "The root of life" is believed to invigorate, rejuvenate, and revitalize the system. Over the past thirty years, Russian, Japanese, and, most recently, research suggests a scientific basis for the use of ginseng as a general body tonic.

Ginseng has been shown to increase work efficiency by raising capacity for mental and physical performance and allowing for better adaptation to high and low temperatures. Ginseng increases tolerance to stress. Its effect is termed adaptogenic. The life of X-ray-irradiated mice has been prolonged with ginseng. It also counteracts the toxic effects of chemicals such as chloroform and amphetamines.

In Chinese health, ginseng is combined with other herbs to help support a wide range of illnesses. Future research may provide important new applications for ginseng in health support.

Saponin glycosides are responsible for ginseng's biological activity. They are called panaxosides by Russian researchers and ginsenosides by the Japanese. Eleven of these substances are found in Oriental ginseng Panax ginseng. ginseng primarily contains the Rb1 and Re ginsenosides.

General Herb Information

There are about nine species in the genus Panax, all but two of which are native to eastern Asia. ginseng is a perennial herb native to eastern North America, favoring north- or east-facing slopes in a well-drained humus-rich soil. It grows to a height of fifteen inches. One-or two-year-old plants - "Strawberry ginseng" -produce three strawberry leaf-like leaflets. Two- to three-year-old plants often develop characteristic five-fingered, palm-shaped leaves. Older plants develop two to five prongs with five leaflets on each prong. The leaflets are oblong, coarsely toothed, and two to six inches long. The flowers are tiny and greenish-white appearing in June to July. Bright red two-seeded berries ripen in late July to October. The white fleshy tap root often develops a human-like form. The plant dies back to the ground every fall leaving a scar on the "neck" at the top of each root.

The age of the root is determined by counting the scars. Ginseng is not the easiest herb to cultivate. Propagation is by seeds which may take six to twenty months to germinate. It should be stratified before planting. Pre-stratified seeds are available from most seed sources. One- two- or three-year-old roots can be purchased for planting, but the buyer risks introducing problematic stock into his or her beds. Freshly harvested seed that has not been stratified can be planted one-half inch deep, six inches apart, in well-prepared beds in September. Seed may germinate the next spring or the following year. If seed is purchased from a large grower, it is a good idea to disinfect the seeds by soaking them in a mix of nine parts water and one part chlorine bleach for five to ten minutes. This will kill problematic organisms. Stratified seed may be planted in the spring. Fifty to one hundred pounds of seed will sow an acre.

A light-textured woods loam, high in humus, is suitable for ginseng culture. Heavy clay or sandy soils will not produce healthy plants. Maintain a pH of around 5 to 6. Shade of 70 percent or more is required for ginseng and can be provided by natural tree canopies, shade screen, or a lath shed. The design of the shade structure should allow rain to reach the beds. Ginseng grown under a natural tree canopy is, of course, the least expensive. Beds can be double-dug and provided with blood meal, bone meal, and leaf mold as soil amenders. If these substances unbalance the pH, use a light application of lime or wood ashes. After plants die back in autumn, they should be mulched with a four- to six-inch layer of straw or leaves.

Plants are subject to attack by leaf blight, insects, root rot, and rodents, who consider the roots a delectable delicacy. Preventative control measures for the organic grower are the most effective. To avoid health issuesd stock, gather wild seeds when possible. Remove and destroy all affected plants in beds. Vertical metal barriers placed around the bed's perimeters can control rodent attacks. Half of a twenty-four-inch sheet of aluminum should be below the soil's surface. Commercial ginseng growers use herbicides such as Phytar 560 and Paraquat. Diathaine, M-45, Captan 50, Malathion, and Sevin are among the pesticides employed in ginseng production.

The roots are harvested in the fall of the fifth or sixth year after planting from seed. Carefully dig the roots with a garden spade, taking care to keep the whole root intact. Remove loose soil by spraying with a hose, then spread the roots on racks to dry. Stir as needed to provide adequate air circulation. Drying time varies depending upon weather and size of roots. Air processing may take as long as a month. Harvest seeds after berries ripen.

Panax Ginseng

Panax quinquefolius L.

The genus name Panax comes from the Greek pas, all, and akos, fix; or panakes, all supporting, referring to the health properties of the ginseng plant. Panacea was a goddess in Greek mythology who could mend all health issues, and who found a supportive for maintaining good health. Frequently one sees the scientific name spelled "Panax quinquefolium" in the belief that the genus name Panax is neuter, and so requires the second word of the binomial to use the Latin suffix "um." However, the name Panax is masculine in both Greek and Latin, and the Code of Botanical Nomenclature requires that the masculine form be used, i.e., quinquefolius.

English Common Names

ginseng, Canadian ginseng, five-fingers, occidental ginseng, sang, seng.

The name ginseng, first applied to Asian ginseng (P. ginseng), is derived from the Chinese ren-shen (in standard Chinese piryin) [also rendered jensheng, jin-hsien, shen seng, and shinseng]. This is usually translated as "man-shaped root" but may be better rendered as "man-essence;" the name originates from (a) the fancied resemblance of ginseng root to the human form, or (b) from the belief that the root represents the essence of the earth crystallized in a human form.

French Common Names

Ginseng, ginseng a cinq folioles.

Morphology

The unbranched, erect stems of ginseng arise from a short rhizome and an elongated tuberous root. The root is 1-3 cm thick and 5-10 cm long, spindle-shaped, and often forked. The roots of older plants become branched and acquire prominent circular wrinides; they are slightly aromatic, and have a sweetish, somewhat bitter taste. Mature plants are 20-70 cm tall, with a whorl of three or four long-stalked, palmate leaves, each generally with five large leaflets, of which the upper three are larger than the lower two. In midsummer, 6-20 small, yellowish flowers are borne on a short stalk arising from the centre of leaf attachment at the top of the stem. Fruits begin to ripen at the end of July and mature to a deep red color. Reproduction is entirely by seed. Seeds are produced by plants more than 3 years old with up Ginseng to 150 being generated by a single plant. However, commonly, only a few seeds are matured by wild plants. Once a seedling of ginseng has become established, its life expectancy is over 20 years, and some plants have been reported to live to at least 60 years of age. The age of a plant can be estimated by the number of stem scars on the short rhizome on top of the root and by leaf number. Wild plants with two palmate leaves ("prongs"), are generally over 3 years old, those with three prongs are mostly more than 6 years old and those with four prongs are mostly over 13 years old.

Asian ginseng is extremely similar in appearance to ginseng, but the former is reported to have tapered leaflet bases while they are rounded in the latter. However, it has proven difficult to identify many plants using this character, and certain other recommended discriminating characters also appear to be quite variable.

Classification and Geography

Panax is a genus of perennial herbs, with two species in eastern North America and perhaps 5-10 species in Asia. Best known is the eastern Asian species P. ginseng C.A. Mey., known as ginseng, Asian ginseng, Oriental ginseng, Chinese ginseng and Korean ginseng, which is the major source of ginseng of commerce. ginseng occurs from southern Ontario and southwestern Quebec south to Oklahoma, Louisiana, and northern Florida.

In North America, two species could be confused with ginseng. Dwarf ginseng (P. trifolius L.) is a smaller species with stemless leaflets, which does not appear to have the properties of ginseng, and is not harvested or cultivated. It is nevertheless a very unusual plant being one of the 0.1% of flowering plants that can change their gender from male to female and vice versa. Wild sarsaparilla (Aralia nudicaulis L.) and other species of Aralia are also superficially similar, but have pinnate instead of palmate leaves.

Ecology

Ginseng occurs in colonies of a few to hundreds of plants in rich, shady, deciduous forests, in deep leaf litter. Sites are frequently on northern or northeastern cool rocky slopes, commonly in areas with limestone outcrops in damp but well-drained soils. ginseng thrives in 75% shade, and even shadier locations in the southern limits of its range. Clearcutting of virgin forests and over-harvesting have drastically reduced the size of wild populations.

Although ginseng cannot change its sex like dwarf ginseng, it can modify its gender through varying ratios of flowers with one or two ovules. In general, the larger and older plants that are able to mature more seeds can be viewed as more female. The flowers are adapted to cross-pollination through different maturation times of the male and female parts of the flower. Soon after the petals separate, the anthers mature and release pollen, prior to the stigmatic lobes separating and becoming receptive. Both wild and cultivated plants of ginseng are visited by a wide variety of insects, but a few species of small bees are the most important pollinators. The attractive fruits are probably dispersed by animals.

Medicinal Uses

Ginseng has been used in Asia for perhaps 5000 years. Wild ginseng was apparently used by many Indian tribes for increasing the fertility of women, as a tonic to increase mental powers, and to help support headache, cramps, fevers, joint pain, and cough. However, the extent to which these uses were acquired from visit ing Europeans is uncertain.

Ginseng is the world's most widely used medicine, a consequence of its popularity in Asian health. Like vitamin C, it is widely used as a avoidance health, and to help maintain good health. It is commonly believed, especially in western countries, that it is an aphrodisiac, has amazing rejuvenating properties, provides energy, lowers blood pressure, retards the aging process, helps support neurological disorders, and speeds recovery from sickness. Ginseng has been said to enhance digestion, help stimulate blood circulation, reduce fatigue and support blood problems, and in general have a stimulating tonic effect. Ginseng has the reputation of being the ultimate elixir of life, a symbol of strength and long life, and a source of happiness. An extremely impressive number of ginseng recipes are employed in Asia for various ailments. Particularly in the Orient, ginseng preparations can be used to support health to help support hypotension, hypertension, stress, insomnia, fatigue, melancholy, joint pain, high blood sugar levels, high cholesterol levels, coughs, immunity issues, anemia, and premature aging.

There is some good evidence for the therapeutic value of ginseng, but it has been a subject of continuing controversy, with western scientists generally rejecting the claims of eastern medicine that ginseng has manifest benefits in supporting numerous illnesses. Much of ginseng medical research has been supported by those with commercial motives, and the design of experiments has often allowed researchers to draw whatever conclusions they wished, but could hundreds of millions of users be wrong?

Chemistry

Ginseng's alleged virtues are believed to be due to a large variety of root triterpene saponins called ginsenosides (less frequently panaxosides and panaquilins). These occur in the foliage and the roots, but by tradition only the roots are used. Many of these chemicals were assigned different names by and Asian ginseng researchers, which of course can be confusing.

Non-medicinal Uses

Ginseng is almost exclusively used for health benefits, although there is some very minor consumption of the root as a vegetable.

Agricultural and Commercial Aspects

The commercial significance of ginseng was not discovered until after knowledge of Asian ginseng was disseminated to the West. Asian ginseng was first described in western literature in 1714 by Pre Jartoux, a missionary in China. Jartoux conjectured that ginseng would be found in similar habitats in North America, and this information was transmitted by the Jesuits in Paris to their Canadian outposts. In 1704, Michel Sarrazin, the King's Physician to "New France," discovered ginseng in Quebec, and brought some roots to Paris. However, not until Father Lafitau, a Jesuit priest and missionary among the Iroquois, read Jartoux's paper and found ginseng near Montreal in 1716, did trade in the New World species begin. By 1718 the Jesuits were shipping dried roots, collected by the Iroquois, to China. They realized in the early 18th century that trade in ginseng with China was extremely lucrative, and so they attempted to keep this trade secret. However, just why the celibate fathers were taking such an unusual interest in a certain low-growing herb rumored to be an aphrodisiac attracted attention, and eventually the secret leaked out. In the early 1700s, ginseng became second only to fur as a trading commodity in New France. The practice of gathering ginseng in North America has continued to the present, especially by rural people in southern Appalachia, who harvest the roots for shipment to Asia and Europe. Historically, ginseng (mostly Asian) has fetched absurdly inflated prices - on occasion, thousands of dollars a kilogram for unusually shaped or larger roots.

ginseng was first cultivated in Canada about 1890, but has been grown commonly only since the 1930s. The major centres of cultivation of ginseng today are in the Haldimand-Norfolk region of southwestern Ontario, and southern British Columbia, and Wisconsin (mostly Marathon County, where 80% of US ginseng is grown). In the US, ginseng is also grown in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and other states. About 545 tonnes were produced in 1991 in Wisconsin. In recent years, dried wild roots from Canada have sold for as much as $200.00/kg, while cultivated roots have sold for about $50.00/kg. In 1991, about 295 tonnes were grown in Ontario, worth an estimated $35,000,000. In British Columbia in 1992, about 109 tonnes of root worth about $13,000,000 were produced, and about 25 tonnes of seeds, worth about $5,000,000. Cana- dian production of ginseng is increasing. About 3/4 of recent production has been shipped to Hong Kong.

ginseng plants take 5-7 years to mature and are grown from seeds or seedlings (1-3 years old). Loamy soils are best and 75% shade provided by screen or lath is essential. The crop is susceptible to issues and usually requires disinfectant products and good air circulation. A good yield of roots is about 4 tonnes per hectare. The Ginseng Growers Association of Canada, centered in Simcoe, Ontario, helps Canadian farmers and promotes the market for the Canadian crop.

Ginseng is a major commodity of Asian commerce. The market for ginseng extends throughout the Far East, and there is comparatively minor usage as well in western nations. Five to six million people in the US alone consume ginseng regularly, and perhaps 20 million in western nations have used it. Until recently, ginseng products in North America were largely imported Asian ginseng, but North -grown ginseng is rapidly becoming popular as well in North America. Until recently, export of wild roots from Ontario amounted to 40,000 per year. A Canadian study completed m 1987 found that the rate at which the wild roots were being harvested would likely eliminate the plant over large portions of its Ontario range. The species is also quite rare in Quebec, so that collecting from the wild in Canada has been inadvisable for some time. In 1988, ginseng was officially listed as "threatened" in Canada by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). In 1989 export of wild Ginseng was officially discontinued from Canada pending evaluation of the magnitude of the threat. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CiTES) requires countries to show that exporting indigenous ginseng will not endanger the plant's survival. In the US, collection and sale of wild ginseng are subject to registration, permits, and an official season. ginseng provides an encouraging model of how to protect plants that have become seriously reduced in numbers because of over collecting. Measures have included both national protection and expansion of cultivation, thus reducing pressure on natural populations. These natural populations are potentially important sources of genetic variation for the improvement of the crop.

Myths, Legends, Tales, Folklore, and Interesting Facts
  • Chinese herbal health is based on the concept of yin and yang forces of Daoist herbal theory. Yang represents masculinity, strength, and heat, and yin by contrast is feminine, mild, and cold. Ginseng is generally considered to represent yang. However, ginseng is "yin of the yang," and is considered good for the respiratory or digestive system to "reduce heat." The "cooler" ginseng also is considered more desirable in hot climates. ginseng supposedly also has more aphrodisiac effect.
  • Ginseng has a "contractile root" - a kind of root possessed by many perennial herbaceous species, which is designed to pull the root down into the ground. This is necessary to maintain the growing tip, which regenerates the stem each year, at ground level, where it is protected. Were it not for the contractile root, each season the growing rhizome would extend the growing tip higher into the air. To counteract the vertical growth of the rhizome, the ginseng roots contract yearly at the same rate at which the rhizome grows upward, pulling the plant downward.
  • In 1788 Daniel Boone collected about 13.6 tonnes of ginseng roots in what is now West Virginia and Kentucky to sell in Philadelphia. At a typical 18th century price of 25cents/kg (10 cents/pound), this would have fetched about $3000.00, an enormous sum of money in the 1780s. Unfortunately during transportation in a boat, the ginseng was damaged by flooding, and had to be redried. Adding to Colonel Boone's woes, during the delay required to dry the ginseng again the price in Philadelphia fell.
  • In 1908, Mr. L.J. Wilson of Pennington Gap, Virginia became totally exasperated at the prospect that the thieves who had robbed his ginseng garden the previous 2 years would return. He set up a series of shotguns with fine trip wires in his garden, with the result that a thief was shot to death and his companion wounded. A coroner's jury exonerated him from criminal blame.
  • The largest wild ginseng root collected was found in woods near Benzonia, Michigan by Custer Higgins; it weighed 1.2 kg.
  • The fable is told about the man who was arrested for selling a ginseng preparation allegedly adding years to one's life. The charlatan, it was found, had been arrested for the same offence before - in 1870, 1910, 1949, and 1975!

Dosage

Commission E recommends a dose of 1 to 2 grams of ginseng root per day.

Panax Ginseng
Panax ginseng C. A. Mey.

Family: Araliaceae.

Other Names: Asian ginseng; Korean ginseng; ginseng (French); Ginseng (German); ginseng (Italian).

Description: A small perennial geophyte with a single stem emerging every year from a short rhizome attached to a fleshy root. One to four palmately compound leaves are formed at a single node which also bears a single cluster of small white flowers that each develop into a fleshy, two-celled, bright red fruit. ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is said to differ by the rounded rather than tapered leaflet bases, but it is difficult to distinguish between the two species.

Origin: Mountain forests of eastern Asia. Grown as a crop in China, Russia, Korea and Japan. ginseng occurs naturally over a large part of the USA and Canada and is also cultivated there on a large scale for export to China.

Parts Used: Fresh or mostly dried root (Ginseng radix).

Therapeutic Category: Adaptogenic tonic.

Uses and Properties: This is the most famous of all Chinese nutraceutical plants and has a great reputation as an adaptogen - a herb that enhances non-specifically the body's own defense against stress and health issues. The root has been used in China for thousands of years and should not be judged as a medicine because it is not aimed at any particular health concern. It is rather aimed at counteracting weakness, fatigue, declining stamina and concentration, and at enhancing convalescence.

Preparation and Dosage: A daily dose is 1 - 2 g (up to 3 g) of dried root (or 200 - 600 mg extract) may be directly chewed, or taken as an infusion stant tea, 3 g teabags or ginseng preparations are available). Treatment should last for at least three to four weeks (up to three months).

Active Ingredients: A complex mixture of triterpenoid saponins with 20(S)-protopanaxadiol and 20(S)-protopanaxatriol as aglycones, collectively known as ginsenosides (up to 6%). The most important ones are the ginsenosides Rg1, Rc, Rd, Rb1, Rb2 and Rb0. Also present is a series of polyacetylenes (the ginsenoynes A-K) and small amounts of essential oil.

Health Effects: Controlled clinical studies have shown that ginseng improves mood, physical and intellectual performance, convalescence and various other metabolic parameters (including immune response).

Status: Pharm.; Comm. E+; WHO 1; clinical studies+.

Panax ginseng (ten sheng or ren sheng) root provides a general tonic effect on the whole body. It provides cardiac support and improves circulation while also acting as a liver tonic and mild stimulant.

Ginseng is considered the king of all tonics. It provides a stimulation to the entire body energy to overcome stress and fatigue and to recover from weakness and deficiencies.

Ginseng has a very beneficial effect on the heart and circulation and can be used to normalize blood pressure, reduce blood cholesterol and avoid atherosclerosis. It nourishes the blood and is thus used to help support anemia. By helping to reduce blood sugar-levels, it can be useful in helping support healthy blood sugar levels.

Ginseng is not used with any health concerns where there is inflammation, burning sensations, high fever and other Yang complaints. Ginseng can be used to help support women with deficiency issues, lowered resistance and lack of hormonal balance, but is not used with Yang complaints, such as excessive menstrual flow.

There are many grades of ginseng available. Panax ginseng comes from China and Korea, and is either dried (white), steamed and dried (which changes the color naturally to red) or extracted. Many herbalists suggest using the red ginseng, the best being shiu chu roots from China.
