Stinging nettle has been tried for centuries to open up the passages of the lungs. Recent studies support the antihistamine effects of nettle leaf providing obvious benefits for those suffering from asthma.

Licorice is an expectorant and anti-inflammatory herb making it excellent for lung infections and complaints of the respiratory tract. It also has the ability to boost the positive effects of cortisone, a commonly prescribed asthma drug, while suppressing or delaying some of the negative side effects of cortisone.

The bioflavonoids present in scullcap are believed to be responsible for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a useful addition to any herbal blend targeting asthma.

As many asthma sufferers tend to have lower-than-normal levels of vitamin C, we have rounded out our blend with the most abundant antioxidant present in the lining of the lungs (Acerola).
TerraVita is an exclusive line of premium-quality, natural source products that use only the finest, purest and most potent ingredients found around the world. • Traditionally used to help support nervous disorders, women's health matters, anxiety, insomnia and much more.
Scullcap, or Scutellaria lateriflora, a member of the mint family, is a perennial herb native to southeastern North America, from New York to W. Virginia, and South Carolina, Missouri, and Alabama. It can generally be found in thick woods, bluffs, and along roadsides. Its root is a creeping, short rhizome which sends up square stems. The stems are branched and 6-18 inches tall. The leaves, soft and heart-shaped at the base, grow to be 1/2" to 2-1/2" long, with scalloped or serrated edges. The flowers of Scullcap range from blue to lavender to purple. They are tube-shaped and hooded, and bloom from May to August. The aerial part of the plant is used in herbal preparations.

A powerful health herb, Scullcap has been used by Natives for generations, generally to help support female problems and nervous disorders. It is anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, astringent, febrifuge, nervine, and tonic. Scullcap contains volatile oil, bitter iridoids, tannins, Scutellarin, and Catapol. Scientific studies have shown Scullcap to be effective in supporting many mental disorders. It is used to effectively support symptoms of hysteria, anxiety, insomnia, and withdrawal from certain drug addictions such as barbiturates and tranquilizers. Additionally, it is taken internally to help support convulsions, neuralgia, and delirium tremens. It acts as a sedative, inducing sleep when necessary, and leaves no unpleasant aftereffects. An infusion of Scullcap can be used to help promote menstruation, and it is known to help support fevers and help stimulate the kidneys.

Name

Scutellaria lateriflora L. (Lamiaceae), commonly called skullcap, mad dog, mad weed, and hooded willow herb.

Source

A perennial plant with purple flowers, it blooms in the U.S. from July to September. It is usually found growing by ditches and river banks, wherever there is a damp environment. Closely related varieties grow in Europe and Asia (S. Baicalensis Georrgi). Remedies are made from the roots of the plant.

History

During the 1700s, physicians used the herb to help support rabies, which is why it is sometimes known as "mad dog." Skullcap was also used to help support tetanus. Its common name, skullcap, comes from the fact that it was often given to inmates of mental asylums who were required to wear skullcaps. Traditional Chinese herbalists have used skullcap to help support neonatal jaundice and to speed convalescence.

Traditional Support Uses

Nervine, sedative, and antispasmodic.

Commission E Recommendations

Skullcap is not on the Commission's approved list. In fact, it is not mentioned at all.

Possible Effects

Until fairly recently, most researchers considered this herb to be devoid of health value. Studies utilizing more sensitive techniques now suggest a number of possible benefits.

There is, for example, some laboratory evidence that an as yet uncharacterized component blocks the effects of some of the stress hormones (adrenalin). Skullcap contains a number of different flavonoids, and some of them possess anti-inflammatory properties, at least in the laboratory.

One kind of flavonoid, trihydroxyflavone, is a very effective free radical scavenger. These same flavonoids also show promise as an approach to help avoid the closure of coronary arteries that have been opened with balloon angioplasty (restenososis).

Studies of patients being addressed for lung health have shown that adding skullcap extract to the product regime partially fights the immune weakness that accompanies medical treatments.

Adding skullcap may also decrease the amount of necrosis factor (a hormone that causes cell death, and that is believed to be one of the chief causes of wasting seen in patients) circulating in the bloodstream. However, claims that skullcap calms the stomach, lowers blood pressure, and acts as a tranquilizer have never been evaluated in clinical trials.

Dosage

Standard infusion or 3-9 grams; of the liquid extract, 10-30 drops.

Traditional herbalists recommend an infusion made with one teaspoon of dried herbs steeped in one cup of boiling water for 20-30 minutes, two to three times a day.

There is reasonable scientific evidence that skullcap strengthens the immune response and decreases the inflammatory response, at least in patients undergoing medical treatments. Whether it provides the same effects to people with colds and coughs, colds is not known (skullcap is often combined with echinacea in cold medications). Providing that skullcap, and not something masquerading as skullcap is being taken, there would seem to be little harm in using this product.

The bitter-tasting aerial portions of skullcap (or scullcap) are considered to be sedative, nervine, and antispasmodic. Skullcap can be used to help support nervousness, insomnia, alcohol and drug withdrawal, and chorea. The biochemical composition of the herb includes volatile oil, scutellarin, bitter glycoside, tannin, fat, bitter principles and sugar.

Skullcap relaxes nervous tension, induces inner calm, and counteracts sleeplessness. In addition, it can also be used for neurological concerns such as chorea. It is one of the most promising herbs to use to withdraw from alcohol and drugs use; it has considerable detoxification properties that will often reduce or lessen the severity of such withdrawal symptoms as delirium tremens.

A typical mild sedative is a combination of equal parts skullcap and hops tea or liquid extract taken three times daily and especially a half hour before retiring.

For withdrawing from drugs or alcohol, take 15-20 drops of skullcap every hour or two This will fight or lessen the severity of withdrawal symptoms.

Scullcap (Skullcap)
Scutellaria lateriflora L.

Family: Lamiaceae.

Other Names: Scutellaire, scutellaire latériflore (French); Virginia-Helmkraut (German); scutellaria (Italian).

Description: Skullcap is a leafy perennial herb of about 0.5 m in height, with erect branches bearing opposite pairs of oblong leaves and numerous bluish or violet flowers borne in a cluster. It is similar to Baical skullcap or huang quin (S. baicalensis) and European skullcap (S. galericulata). The common names refer to the helmet-shaped flowers.

Origin: North America (S. lateriftora), Russia to China and Japan (S. baicalensis) and Europe (S. galericulata).

Parts Used: Dried aerial parts (S. lateriflora); dried roots (S. baicalerisis).

Therapeutic Category: Anticonvulsant, sedative (S. lateriflora, S. galericulata); anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, circulatory (S. baicalensis).

Uses and Properties: The and European skuilcaps are traditional nerve tonics and sedatives. The species became well known as a support for grand mat, hysteria and nervous complaints. It is today widely used in commercial preparations, mainly for nervous complaints - tension, anxiety and insomnia. Baical skullcap is one of the most important Chinese supportives and is very popular for the support of a wide variety of health concerns, including supporting allergies, inflammation, arteriosclerosis, dermatitis and high blood lipids.

Preparation and Dosage: An infusion of 1 - 2 g of the dried herb is taken three times per day (or equivalent doses in the form of a liquid extracts and extracts)

Active Ingredients: Scutellaria species are known for their rich diversity and abundance of flavonoids, to which most of the health properties are ascribed. S. lateriflora is said to contain apigenin, hispidulin, luteolin, scutellarein and scutellarin as main flavonoids, together with catalpol (an iridoid glycoside). The roots of S. baicalensis have numerous flavonoids (up to 20%), with flavone-O-glycosides (mainly baicalin and and wogonoside) as main compounds.

Health Effects: Several studies have been carried out with S. baicalensis (mostly on lipid metabolism and histamine) but very few on S. lateriflora. Baical skullcap does not appear to have any antispasmodic activity but has shown efficacy in the support for the symptoms of cerebral thrombosis and paralysis.

Status: Traditional health; Pharm.

Skullcap (or scullcap; or huang chi in Chinese) produces a bitter-tasting root that has been shown to benefit the systems of the body that include the heart, lungs, liver, gallbladder, and large intestines. Its diuretic, laxative, antipyretic, hemostatic, and astringent healthy actions have made it a valuable herb in the history of Chinese health.

This is another species of plant of which there are many varieties found in different parts of the world. In Western herbology, the skullcap is considered a very important herb for the nerves, and its leaves are used in health. In Chinese herbology, "scute" root is primarily used as a cooling, antipyretic herb that sedates by removing the congestion of heat toxin from the heart, lungs, and liver. It is given for jaundice, suppurating infections, carbuncle, sores, pneumonia, and insecure motion of the fetus.
