Cape Aloe
Aloe ferox Mill.

Family: Asphodelaceae.

Other Names: Aloes cape; bitter aloe; aloès féroce (French); Kap-Aloe, Gefährliche Aloe (German); aloe del Capo (Italian).

Description: The bitter aloe or Cape aloe is a robust, single-stemmed succulent with broad, spiny leaves and usually bright red or orange flowers in erect, candle-shaped clusters.

Origin: Southeastern parts of South Africa. The products are wild-crafted on a sustainable basis.

Parts Used: The bitter, yellow leaf juice is dried to form a dark brown resinous solid, known commercially as aloe lump or Cape aloes (= Aloe capensis). The gel (non-bitter, inner fleshy part of the leaf) is used in tonics and cosmetics.

Therapeutic Category: Bitters: laxative, tonic; Gel: tonic, wound repairing.

Uses and Properties: Cape aloes is an important laxative and is included in bitter tonics. The gel has become popular as a health drink. Minor uses include supporting joint pain, skin irritations and conjunctivitis. Extracted and spray-dried leaf gel is used in skin care products.

Active Ingredients: The main purgative principle (15-30% of aloe lump) is the anthrone C-glucoside aloin (= barbaloin). Aloin occurs as an equal mixture of two stereoisomers, aloin A and aloin B. The wound-mending properties of the gel are ascribed to polysaccharides and glycoproteins and to hydrating, insulating and supportive effects.

Health Effects: Aloin is converted in the colon by bacteria into aloe-emodin anthrone. Anthrones are responsible for a stimulant laxative action. Molecular targets include a chloride channel and less importantly the Na+, K+-ATPase. Anthranoids enhance peristalsis and the secretion of water and inhibit its resorption in the colon. Aloe extracts have disinfectant and cytotoxic properties.

Status: Pharm.; Comm. E+; ESCOP 5; WHO 1.

Preparation and Dosage: A small crystal of the product (0.05 - 0.2 g), is taken orally as a laxative. Half the laxative dose is taken for joint pain. Fresh bitter sap is instified directly against conjunctivitis and nasal congestion.

Aloes Cape is a palm-like succulent plant native to the Cape Region of South Africa. Aloes Cape is also often grown in cactus and rock gardens in areas having tropical or subtropical climates, and is particularly popular throughout southern California. Aloes Cape is also commonly known as Bitter Aloe, Red Aloe, and Tap Aloe. With leaves having sharp, reddish-brown spines along their perimeters, Aloes Cape can typically grow up to 10 feet in height, and have a spread of 3 feet in diameter. The genus "aloe" is derived from the Greek word for the dried juice of aloe leaves; and "ferox" can be translated as "fierce" or "war-like" referring to the spiny edged leaves of the plant.

Plant members of the Aloe family are well-known for their natural high concentration of aloin, and have been the basis for many herbal topical supportives throughout Europe for centuries. Sailors routinely used this herb on their skin upon injury by the elements, canvas sails, rope burns, and salt water exposure. Early missionaries also spread the rejuvenating benefits of Aloes in their work among many primitive communities. Aloes is even mentioned in the Bible for the embalming of the body of Jesus. Cape Aloes is one of the sources of the purgative "bitter aloes," a strong laxative (not to be confused with Aloe Vera, derived from the plant Aloe vera, and used as an emollient for many skin care products).

In parts of South Africa, the bitter yellow juice of Aloes Cape found just below the skin of the leaf has been harvested for over 300 years. The hard, black resinous product is the portion commonly called Aloes Cape, and can be used mainly for its laxative properties. Aloes Cape has also proven effective for joint pain support, being a primary ingredient in "Schwedenbitters" and "Lewensessens" which are found throughout Europe.

Excellent product

This product is stronger than aloe vera. This is what I need to help my chronic constipation for now. I can expect good movement the next day. Just one capsule. I've tried it on an empty stomach and with a meal. It seems to work better with a meal. I'm so glad I discovered ZooScape. They have this great quality product. I will be sure to try their other products too.
