• Effectively expels flatulence, eases abdominal pain and more.
With a pot of basil on the window sill and a tomato plant in a window box outside, you have the perfect partnership for many summer salads and sauces, for basil and tomatoes go together in any combination. The herb is a half-hardy annual emanating from warm climates and is therefore a sun-lover.

History

Basil traveled overland to Europe via the Middle East from India, where it was considered sacred by the Hindus. A Belgian old wives' tale of the sixteenth century told that basil leaves crushed between two bricks would turn into scorpions, while Boccaccio has his heroine Lisabetta burying her lover's head in a pot of basil and watering it with her tears.

Characteristics

According to type, a basil plant can have either a multitude of minute leaves or ones up to 4 inches long and almost half as wide. Glossy, smooth, silky, and highly aromatic, the leaves smell similar to cloves. The stems tend to be woody and straggly, and the flowers, in long spikes, are small, white, and tubular. They appear from midsummer through to the fall. The plants can reach a height of 24 inches.

Growing Tips

Basil is the ideal window sill herb, but will grow outdoors if sheltered from the wind.

Sow seed shallowly in gentle heat in late spring and transplant toward midsummer, taking care not to disturb the roots. It likes a moist but well-drained soil and plenty of sun. Pinch out the tips of the shoots to help avoid flowering and encourage bushy growth. Harvest by taking the larger, lower leaves first.

General Usage

In Italy and France, basil is used to make pesto or pistou sauce, in which it is crushed with garlic and pine kernels. The sauce may be served with spaghetti or stirred into soup.

The fresh and dried herb is antiseptic, sweet smelling, and relaxing and can be used in bath and after-bath preparations. Frequently used in potpourri, it not only smells nice but also repels flies. The essential oil is very aromatic and is mainly used in soaps and perfumery.

Medicinal Usage

Health-wise,basil may be used to support chills, colds, and fevers where it has a stimulant action. For the digestion, basil is of great help in cases of stomach inflammation and abdominal cramps associated with menstruation. Basil is sometimes referred to as St. Joseph wort, not to be confused with St. John's Wort.

Basil is also known by the names Sweet Basil, Garden Basil, Common Basil, Lui Le, Tulsi, and St. Josephwort. The name originates from the Greek "basilikon phuton," meaning "kingly or royal herb." Basil is an annual plant found wild in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The bushy stems grows to 1 to 2 feet high. Basil has an upright stalk, branching on all sides with two leaves at every joint....a little snipped about the edges. It is also grown in gardens mid to late summer.

Basil has a rich and fanciful history. In the first century A.D., Roman naturalist Pliny reported that Basil regulates flatulence, which had been subsequently proven true. In the Far East, the herb had been used as a cough suppresants, and in Africa, it can be used as a disinfectant. Colonists considered Basil the essential ingredient in a snuff used to ease headaches. In India, Basil was held in such high esteem that it was used in courts to swear upon, and next to the Lotus it was considered one of the most sacred plants. This plant can be used as an embalming herb in Ancient Egypt. In some parts of Mexico, Basil is carried in one's pocket to attract money and to keep a lover faithful.

The above ground portion of this plant is used for health benefits. Primary chemical constituents of Basil include essential oil (estragol, eugenol, lineol, linalol), caffeic acid, tannins, beta carotene, and vitamin C. Basil is aromatic, and carminative. It will help to expel flatulence, and ease griping pains in the abdomen. The essential oil obtained from this plant contains camphor. This herb is best known for it's many culinary uses. Health-wise,Basil can also be tried to help support various topical applications - as a poultice or salve for insect bites, and acne; as a gargle or mouthwash for thrush; as a bath herb for support for healthy levels of energy; and as an eyewash for tired eyes. The essential oil of Basil is added to massage oils for sore muscles. And the dried herb was burned as an antiseptic incense. Having a pot of Basil on the table also helps to repel flies and mosquitoes. The juice can be applied to infections. Basil is antispasmodic, carminative, galactagogue, and stomachic. It had been sometimes used for whooping cough as an antispasmodic.

Basil is a beautifully sweet-smellmg herb which can be used fresh in bath water, in steamers, and in face packs for its antiseptic and relaxing properties. Basil infusions and herbal oil made with rose petals are gorgeously aromatic in creams for the face and lotions for the body. Basil and peppermint vinegar added to a bath or bath bag, tones and refreshes.

General Herb Information

Basil - Any one of five varieties of basil may be used in cooking:

Sweet basil (Ocimum Basilicum) with inch-long, dark green leaves and a clove-pepperish odor and taste; a variety of sweet basil with purplish red leaves; a green leaf dwarf variety; a purple leaf dwarf variety;

Italian or curly basil (O. crispum) with large, crinkly, light green leaves and a stronger odor and taste than the sweet basil. All have the same cultural requirements.

Propagation: By seed, in spring, outdoors; germinates easily in 4 or 5 days.

Nature of Plant: If tops are pinched out, plants will grow into little bushes, the dwarf varieties into beautiful compact ones; makes attractive annual border plants; culinary importance.

Spacing of Mature Plants: Italian 15 inches, sweeet 12 inches, dwarf varieties 6 inches.

Cultural Requirements: Dry, light, well drained, medium rich soil, in sunny sheltered spot; after severe cutting dig a little fertilizer into soil about roots; in harvesting, if cut but part way to the ground, a second crop can be had later.

Uses

Leaf: (Culinary) In vinegar, soup, stew, salad, with cream or cottage cheese, in egg or tomato dishes, chopped meat, sausage, in butter sauce for fish, sprinkled over peas or boiled potato, in vegetable juice cocktails; (Household) plants in house said to drive away flies, dried powdered leaves are used as snuff; (industrial) perfumes; (Health) stimulant, nervine.

Basil, also known as common basil, St. Joseph wort, and sweet basil, is found wild in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is the focus of a centuries-old controversy: Some attribute evil powers to it, and others hold it as an object of sacred worship. Its name, which rhymes with "dazzle", derives from basileus, the Greek word for "king", and it is highly esteemed in the East, where it is planted outside Hindu temples. In Crete, however, basil is considered an ill omen and an agent of the devil. The herb's usefulness is generally associated with the stomach and related organs. Basil is believed to help support stomach cramps, enteritis, constipation, vomiting, and stomach aches. It is also thought to promote lactation in nursing mothers.

Plant Facts and Growing Tips

Plant: Annual. Basil's shiny green leaves are 1 to 2 inches long, and small white flowers grow in spikes at the ends of the stems. Size and color of the leaf differ by variety.

Height: Usually 1 to 2 feet, but size differs by variety.

Soil: Moderately rich, moist, well composted, well drained.

Exposure: Full sun or semi-shade.

Propagation: From seeds sown in late spring, during the first or second lunar phase, at a minimum temperature of 60°F (15°C). Germination is quick at higher temperatures. Seedlings may "damp off" if planted too thickly, so sow seeds thinly. A light covering of clean sand sprinkled over the soil will absorb excess moisture. If you're starting seeds indoors, use a disinfectant powder dissolved in the water you use to saturate the planting mixture.

Care: Don't transplant seedlings started indoors to the garden until both the days and the nights are warm. Mature plants should be 12 inches apart. Pinch them back frequently to promote bushy growth. Also, pinch off flower buds to keep the plant from becoming tough. Basil should not be fertilized, as its flavor is likely to be affected. It's a popular choice for planting near patios because its scent repels flies and mosquitoes.

Part Used for Tea: Leaves.

Taste: Spicy, clovelike flavor; flavors differ somewhat by variety.

How to Brew

By Infusion: Use 1 teaspoon dried herb (or 3 teaspoons fresh, crushed herb). Cover with 1 cup boiling water. Strain, and flavor with honey, if desired.

Headache Relaxer

Here is is a good tea for a stress headache, especially if you're trying to sleep:
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried chamomile flowers
  • 1 teaspoon dried mint leaves
Mix herbs. Infuse 1 teaspoon of mixture in 1 cup boiling water. Steep 5 to 8 minutes, or to taste.

It had been sometimes used for whooping cough as an antispasmodic.

In Hindustan, the juice of Basil leaves is poured into the ear to help support otitis. The seeds are regarded as refreshing and sedative. An infusion can be used as a support for burning urine and nephritic affections. This sedative action sharply contrasts with all that is known of the stimulant properties of basil. Almost all the plants of the same family are used in Java as a stimulant. One traveller in Persia reports that Basil seeds are macerated in water then chilled and this maceratum alleviates the excessive heat of summer. In Egypt they are used as a spice.

Dioscorides regarded Basil as a diuretic, but he claimed, without due reason, that it weakened the sight. Frederick Hoffman considered the essential oil of Basil a cephalic and antispasmodic; Gilbert advised its use in atonic neurosis; Bodard suggested it in place of camphor.

According to Molina, there is a remarkably strong Basil to be found in Chile. Because of the droplets of salt water to be found every morning at the tip of each leaf, it is called O. salturn even though the plant is not growing in a salty soil. This water is used as common salt. One British scientist mentions O. piosum, which, according to Dr. Fleming, was used by Indian women to alleviate the pain of childbirth; and O. sanctum, the juice of which is used in that same country for catarrhal affections.

Basil is quite simply a very aromatic plant which has the stimulating properties of mint and other very aromatic plants.

In the Far East, the herb had been used as a cough suppressants, and in Africa, it can be used as a disinfectant.

Medicinal Usage

In his Family Herbal, John Hill states, "Basil is little used for health, but it deserves to be much more. A tea made of the green plant is good against all obstructions. No simple is more effectual for gently promoting the menstruation, and for removing the complaints which naturally attend their stoppage:" In old herbal literature, crushed leaves can be used to help support the stings of bees and scorpions. Basil can be used to help support mild nervous disorders and rheumatic pains. A snuff of the dried leaves can be used to help support nervous tension headaches. In Central America, 0. basilicum is put into the ears to help support deafness. The Chinese use basil to help support stomach spasms and kidney ailments, and to help promote blood circulation before and after childbirth. Mexican s use basil for menstrual and labor pains. For earache, the powdered leaves are steeped in olive oil.

0. basilicum has stomachic, tonic, carminative, galactogenic, emmenogogic, and stomach ache relief qualities.

The essential oil of basil contains delta-linalool and estragole as the main components, with varying amounts of methyl cinnamate, eugenol, borneol, ocimene, geraniol, anethole, safrole, camphor, and other components. Concentrations of these chemicals vary greatly depending upon the species, variety, time of harvest, soil, and weather . Basils having a strong clove scent contain high amounts of eugenol-clove bud oil contains up to 90 percent eugenol. Basil oil reportedly has disinfectant qualities. The oil is used commercially for fragrance in perfumes, soaps, toothpastes, mouthwashes, and in flavoring liqueurs such as chartreuse.

General Herb Information

Basil is probably the most widely cultivated herb in gardens. The genus Ocimum is represented by over 160 species of annuals and short-lived perennials native to warm temperate regions of Asia, Africa, and South and Central America.

Ocimum basilicum and its large-leafed 'Italian' and 'Lettuce Leaf' varieties are extensively cultivated in the United States. Most seeds sold as sweet basil are usually one of these varieties. 0. basilicum is an erect, branched annual and grows three feet high. The leaves are bright green, smooth, oval, and acutely pointed, with entire or slightly toothed margins. Leaves of 0. basilkum are about 1 to 2 inches long, though the leaves of the lettuce leaf variety may reach four inches in length. Flowers are arranged on racemes. They are one-fourth to one-half inch long, in whorls (verticillasters) of six flowers, with two opposite groups of three flowers. The whorls may be compact or spaced some distance apart. Two tiny leaf-like bracts are arranged opposite one another below each whorl. The cup-like calyx has a broad, rounded upper lip, its margin curving upward. The lower lip has four sharp pointed lobes, two on the sides and two at the lower edge. The flowers are white to purple in color, with broad four-lobed upper lips and a narrow four-lobed lower lip. The black seeds are about one-sixteenth of an inch in diameter and produce mucilage when soakd in water.

Ocimum basilicum 'Purpurascens purple basil', has deep purple stems and leaves sometimes mottled with green. The flowers are lilac toward the centers, becoming a paler white-lavender on the flower's edges. The cultivar 'Dark Opal': developed in the 1950s at the University of Connecticut, is consistently purple with no mottling.

Ocimum basilicum 'Citriodora', lemon basil, has a pleasing citrus scent. It grows to be about a foot tall and has small leaves about five-eighths inch wide and 1 inches long. This tender annual hails from Southeast Asia and Australia.

a kilimandscharicum, camphor basil, is a tender perennial native to tropical Africa, growing more than three feet high. The leaves have a strong camphor odor and are about one inch wide and three inches long. This is a good perennial for southern climates but will not survive a freeze. Unlike sweet basil, the leaves of this species have tiny hairs, giving it a grayish cast. It is best propagated from cuttings. The racemes may be up to one foot long.

0. sanctum, holy basil, is a native of Malaysia and India. It grows from one foot to two feet tall and has many branches. In India it is called tulasi and is venerated by the Hindus. Tn/an can be used as an amulet to protect the body in life and death and is a "giver of children". An immortal plant of the gods, it is worshipped in hymns and embodies perfection itself-the mystery of the creator is in the mystery of tulasi. According to Helen H. Darrah, author of The Cultivated Basilc, in the United States most seed sown as a sanchim or "spice basil" is probably a hybrid of 0. canum and O. basilicum var: True O. sanctum is seldom seen in gardens.

O. gratissimum L., East Indian or tree basil may grow six feet tall in regions with no frost, and the hairy leaves may be as long as six inches with a width of 3 inches, though the plant seldom attains such size under cultivation in North America. Smaller forms grow from two to three feet tall. It has a strong clove scent. Basil is started from seed sown indoors in late March or early April, or directk in the garden as soon as the danger dfrost has passed and the soil has warmed up. Seed germinates in five to fourteen days, blooming begins eight to ten weeks after planting, and full bloom takes twelve to fourteen weeks. Seeds may rot in a cold damp soil. Seed may also slip up to the soil's surface after a rain because of the slippery coat produced by the mucilage in the seed. Sow to a depth of one-fourth to one-half inch. The seed will remain viable for over a decade if refrigerated. About six pounds of seed will plant an acre.

O. basilicum and its varieties like a fairly rich, moist garden soil and full sun. If the soil is too rich, the plants will produce lush leaf growth with poor oil content. The soil should be well-aerated-a double-dug bed is perfect for basil culture. The soil pH should fall between 5 and 8. Cultivate the plants when young, being careful not to damage the fast-growing root system. After the first crop is cut, the soil around the roots should not be disturbed. Pull weeds by hand. Give basil seedlings eighteen-to twenty-four-inch spacings. Water basil at the base of the plant as cold water may produce spotting on the leaves-especially if it's watered in the morning and exposed to intense sunlight. The basils are tender annuals, usually succumbing to the first frost. An acre of basil may produce one to two tons of dried leaf. Leaf harvesting may begin just before the plants bloom. At this time, the lower leaves begin to turn yellow. Cut three to six inches above the ground to insure a good second growth. For fresh harvest pinch off the flower buds as they develop, causing the plants to branch. Take leaves as needed. From the field to the drying area, basil must be handled with care. Bruising the leaves releases the essential oil and causes the leaves to turn black. Basil has a fairly succulent stem and takes longer to dry than other herbs. Basil is perhaps the most useful cooking herb with diverse culinary potential. It is excellent with tomato dishes, carrots, green beans, lentils, zucchini, chicken, red meats, and fish. Chop fresh leaves for soups and salads. Use the following recipe for a delicious pesto:
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves
  • 1 cup fresh parsley
  • leaves
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 cloves fresh garlic
  • 1 handful of chopped almonds
  • <
Mix ingredients in blender starting out with the olive oil and about one-fourth of the basil and parsley. Slowly add the remaining ingredients. Serve cold on pasta or any of the foods mentioned above.

Make basil vinegar for salads by placing one plant's leaves in a pint of your favorite wine, rice, or cider vinegar.

Basil is high in vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and iron, and contains about 14 percent protein and over 60 percent carbohydrates.

SWEET BASIL (Ocimum basilicum), a member of the mint family, native to tropical Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands, was the most sacred plant in the Hindu gardens of India, worshipped by all members of the family. Its name is derived from the Greek basilicos - royal. Sweet basil has been used since pre-Christian times as a cooking herb.

Medicinal Usage

Basil leaves were used in wine as a tonic for digestion complaints and, although a stimulant, to help soothe nerves. When crushed, they could be used to help support headaches and nasal colds.

Culinary Usage

Basil, preferably fresh, seasoned medieval sauces, soups and thinks. Although versatile, it is one of the few herbs that increases its flavour when cooked, and should be used sparingly.

Miscellaneous

Thought to be a native of south-east Asia, basil has been cultivated in Europe from at least Roman times. As it likes a warm Mediterranean climate, it is difficult to grow in Britain. Because it releases its scent when walked upon, basil was a useful herb for strewing on floors to cover offensive smells. It also, reputedly, repelled flies. The oil is not only used in health, but also for making perfumes and incense.

Our Ground Basil Leaves are an all natural herbal spice, with no additives, or fillers. Basil has a warm and sweet, delicate minty flavor. It is terrific when added to sauces, meats, salads, soups, dressings, and much more!
