• Traditionally used to help support coughs, colds, pulmonary complaints, diarrhea, flatulence and more.
Medicinal Usage

Pleurisy root has been used more extensively for health purposes than any other milkweed. Plains Indians ate the raw root for bronchial and pulmonary afflictions. The root was also chewed and put on wounds, or dried and powdered, then blown into wounds. The root has diuretic, tonic, diaphoretic, expectorant, and antispasmodic properties. Doses as small as a tablespoon of chopped root boiled in water may have emetic and laxative effects.

This plant is effective as an expectorant and diaphoretic in pleurisy, coughs, pneumonia, and other lung inflammations. Coughs, colds, asthma, stomach problems, colic, and rheumatic pains have been improved with this plant. A teaspoon of the dried root can be boiled in a cup of water and taken one or two times a day.

A glycoside-asclepiadine-is contained in the root, along with asciepione, a bitter principle, an essential oil and resin.

General Herb Information

Of the 200 or so species of Asclepias, A. tuberosa is one of the showiest. Butterfly weed or pleurisy root is, in fact, one of the most glorious flowering roadside weeds of America. It well earns both common names. It is one of the best herbal supportives for pleurisy, and it attracts hordes of butterflies. It is a perennial growing from two to three feet tall native to dry gravelly soils from Maine to Florida, west to Arizona, and north to Minnesota.

Unlike other milkweeds, it doesn't produce a milky juice and its leaves are alternate rather than opposite or whorled. The plant is hairy and rough. The lance-shaped to oblong leaves, two to six inches long, are entire, sessile or with short leaf stalks, dark green above and paler beneath. The one-fourth inch hooded and horned orange flowers are borne on showy, erect umbels, appearing in late May in the southern part of its range, lasting through September in the north. Occasionally flowers may be reddish or yellow. The slender furry seed pods are three to four inches long.

Pleurisy root is propagated from root cuttings made in the spring or fall or by seeds sown in late autumn to germinate the following spring. The thick, fleshy, horizontal roots break easily when dug, but if you're careful to excavate as much root and surrounding soil as possible, the plant transplants well. It is always best to purchase wild plants from nurseries specializing in such stock, rather than deplete wild populations. Plants grown from seed may take two to three years to flower.

A dry sandy, well-drained, slightly acid soil is best. Full sun is essential. Harvest roots in the fall. Older woody roots may have to be split with a small axe.

The young seed pods of this and other milkweeds can be cooked as a vegetable. The Sioux made a crude sugar from its flowers.

Pleurisy Root, also known as Butterfly Weed, Canada Root, Silkweed, Swallow Wort, Tuber Root, Wind Root, Colic Root, and Orange Milkweed, is native to North America. It is a member of the milkweed family, but does not produce the milky juice commonly seen in its kin. Pleurisy Root usually grows to about a foot in height, and every summer it produces deep yellow and orange flowers. Pleurisy Root gets its name from its use as a support for pleurisy by the Natives.

Health-wise,only the root is used. The root is gray-brown and spindle-shaped with a knotty crown. Powdered Pleurisy Root is yellow-brown. Pleurisy Root was used by the Native tribes and by settlers for a variety of lung ailments and as a topical product for warts and sores. In the 19th century, Pleurisy Root was an official supportive listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia, and was used in supporting coughs, colds, bronchial and pulmonary complaints. It was also used to help support diarrhea, dysentery, joint pain, irritated skin, colic, and flatulence. Pleurisy Root contains glycosides, such as asclepiadin, volatile oil, essential oil, resins, amino acids, and flavonoids, such as Rutin and Quercetin.

Today, Pleurisy Root is most often used to help support product for coughs, and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, diuretic, anti-spasmodic, diaphoretic, and carminative properties. It is often used in conjunction with Capsicum, Cayenne, and Lobelia in supporting pulmonary infections.

Pleurisy dried roots have traditionally been used specifically for pleurisy, but also for coughs and digestion. The plant is still commonly used to help support these ailments in the United Kingdom but is less popular in mainland Europe and other parts of the world.

Pleurisy Root
Asclepias tuberosa L.

Family: Asclepiadaceae.

Other Names: Butterfly weed; asclépiade tubéreuse (French); Knollige Schwalbenwurz (German); esculapia (Italian).

Description: The plant is a sparse, single-stemmed perennial herb of up to 0.6 m high with narrowly oblong leaves and attractive orange flowers that are arranged in clusters at the branch tips. The seeds are borne in pointed capsules and are dispersed by means of silky seed haits.

Origin: North America; mainly wild-harvested.

Parts Used: Roots.

Therapeutic Category: Expectorant, diaphoretic, antispasmodic.

Active Ingredients: The chemical compounds of A. tuberosa are poorly recorded but it shares with other Asclepias species the presence of cardiac glycosides of the cardenolide type, such as glucofrugoside, frugoside and coroglaucigenin, and others. Flavonols, flavonol glycosides, phytosterols and triterpenes are also present.

Health Effects: Pleurisy root stimulates the heart and circulation. The cardiac glycosides are known to cause nausea and vomiting in larger doses. Animal studies showed uterotonic and oestrogenic effects but efficacy for the traditional indications has yet to be proven scientifically. Since cardenolides can also act as saponins, a positive secretolytic effect appears plausible.

Notes: Three other species, milkweed (Asclepias syriaca), swamp milkweed (A. incarnata), and Curassavican swallow-wort (A. curassavica) have been used as expectorants and to help support asthma. In Africa, A. crispa, A. fruticosa and A. physocarpa are popular in traditional medicine to help support various ailments, ranging from stomach complaints to lung health and headache.

Status: Traditional health; Pharm.

Preparation and Dosage: A dose of 1 - 4 g ofdried root is taken three times per day by infusion. Tinctures of 1:10 in 45% alcohol are taken in 1 - 5 mL quantities three times per day.

Pleurisy root, or butterfly weed as it is sometimes called, favorably affects the lungs and brochioles due, in part, to its powerful expectorant properties. Additionally, pleurisy root has been shown to act as a diaphoretic, a carminative, a diuretic, and a cardiac tonic. As its name suggests, the bitter root is ideal for helping support pleurisy, lung and bronchial congestion, and coughs and coldss.

Pleurisy root can be useful in supporting pleurisy and pains accompanying breathing. It can also be tried to help support the common colds, coughs, fevers and various other pulmonary problems. For lung and bronchioles problems combine equal parts pleurisy root, elecampane root, mullein herb and yerba santa. Take three cups daily.

Dosage: Standard infusion or 3-9 grams; of the liquid extract, 5-40 drops every three hours as required.
