• Wonderful muscatel highlights with a delicate strength
Second flush Darjeelings are typified as being more complex and fuller in the cup than the first flush varieties which tend to be a little greener and lighter. Darjeelings are considered among the rarest and most prestigious of the black teas. The best grades are the whole leaf types with lots of "tip." This tea is the grade FTGFOP. (finest tippy golden flowery orange pekoe) and is in the upper 10 percentile of Castleton's quality.

The estate is near the town of Kurseong in the Darjeeling district of northern India. Castleton is one of the top estates in Darjeeling and consistently produces top teas - and not surprisingly obtains the top prices. The major method of transportation to Darjeeling is road (very treacherous) and a narrow gauge railway. In world terms the railway is almost considered a toy railroad system. The narrow gauge does not support large engines or carriages, also the steep inclines necessitate a cog system to help avoid to trains from rolling backwards. Despite all the difficulties that must be contended with, the area produces the "Champagne of Tea."

Produced in the Himalayas, Darjeelings are grown in the shadow of Kangchenjunga, the snow capped mountain said to be home of the Hindu God "Shiva" -the Destroyer. Darjeeling means land of the Thunderbolt and it is in fact the weather, combined with the attitude, soil and bright sunlight that results in an incomparable beverage.

There are 3 main times of year for producing good quality Darjeelings:
  • 1st flush - Springtime harvested teas from late February to mid-April. The young leaves yield a light tea with generally intense muscatel with "point." A gentle afternoon tea.
  • 2nd flush - Harvested in June, these teas are more fully developed. The liquor is bright and the taste full and round excellent muscatel. An superb afternoon tea that is especially good with scones and raspberry conserve.
  • Autumnal - Not always available depending upon the weather, they are typified by a round taste and coppery liquor. Excellent as a breakfast tea with milk.

• An astringent flavor that is almost dry to the taste
• A seasonal second flush tea
Very few Darjeeling estates have the ability to produce exotic grades of tea. Soom has brand new equipment and is able to adjust finished leaf style very easily. Soom only produces tea from March through to end October/early November. The best time for Darjeeling quality is from March through to mid-July (this Soom is from End June production). Teas produced during this time have lovely and intriguing muscatel flavor. The flavor is a result of rarefied mountain air, bright sunshine, cool temperatures, excellent soil and the Chinese genus of the Camellia Sinensis bush. The plucking fields of Soom are about 5200 feet above sea level and the terrain is very severe with some of the slopes approaching 45 degrees. The slopes are so steep that the estate still carries the green leaf to the factory by mountain pony. Many of the bushes are over 130 years old but produce remarkable tea. Soom is highly regarded for quality and it is not uncommon for its produce to be air freighted to world buyers.

There are several theories about the origin of the name of the estate. "Soom" in Lepcha Language (local dialect) means "Three" or "Triangular." Interestingly, the estate is bounded by three streams and is somewhat triangular in shape. Another school of thought is Soom also means "holy abode" and as Soom has a holy deity who is worshipped, it is possible the name originated from here.

The factory burned to the ground in 1995 and was out of production for 1 1/2 years. The new factory has all modern equipment, which now produce some of Darjeeling's best teas. Top tea estates perform a social function and Soom is exemplary in this regard. The estate not only employs 700 people, but provides housing, food and medical needs for the families resulting in about 2000 people living on the estate in full view of the Himalayan Mountains.

• A delicate and refined muscatel character
• Only 800 kilograms are produced by this estate annually
Lingia is one of the premiere Darjeeling tea estates of India. Some of the reasons for this are as follows:
  • 90% of the bushes which provide the green leaf to the factory are from the China genus, which provides a distinctive character when grown in the Darjeeling area. The balance 10% of the green leaf is the Assam genus which provides tea of a slightly more fully bodied character and in the right proportion with China genus tea produce outstanding specialty teas.
  • The altitude of this estate is very high creating for excellent quality.

Margaret's Hope Tea 25 tea bags 510169 $30.84
50 tea bags 510170 $50.71

• From one of Darjeeling's best known estates
• A lovely muscatel flavor with a delicious astringency
During the 1930's the garden was owned by Mr. Bagdon who lived in London but visited the tea garden regularly. He had two daughters. The younger daughter named Margaret, who when she saw the tea garden fell in love with it, hoping one day she would have an opportunity to return. Sadly she fell ill on board ship during the return trip to England and died soon after. In her memory, her father changed the garden's name to Margaret's Hope. It is believed that she visits the estate bungalow from the western side, coming through the main guestroom and leaving from the study through the verandah to the tennis courts.

The bushes at Margaret's Hope are almost entirely the Chinese Jat (genus) accounting for the green leafed tippy appearance of the manufactured leaf and the superb fragrance. Because the tea is grown at such high altitudes and in relatively cool weather the bushes do not grow quickly, and as such the production is limited. The best time of the year for quality is during second flush (end May - end June). During this time Darjeelings are incomparable to any other tea in the world. The fragrance and taste is a complex bouquet that reaches right out of the cup. Some would describe the taste as nutty; others find it reminds them of black currants, but most often it is described as similar to the taste and fragrance of muscat grapes.

There are 3 main times of year for producing good quality Darjeelings:
  • 1st flush - Springtime harvested teas from late February to mid-April. The young leaves yield a light tea with generally intense muscatel with "point." A gentle afternoon tea.

8 oz 510172 $59.81
Mim Tea 25 tea bags 510173 $30.37
50 tea bags 510174 $49.88

• Good body with a classic muscatel character
Mim is in the Darjeeling area of Northern India. From the town center on a clear day the peak of Mount Everest can be seen. The genus of the Darjeeling tea bush is the Chinese Jat which gives it the distinctive muscatel character.

Due to the superb taste and limited production of Darjeelings, these teas are quite expensive. There are many who wish to take advantage of the high prices and as a result there are Darjeeling "blends." Regrettably, these blends are quite often very poor facsimiles of Darjeeling and in some cases only contain 10% true Darjeeling teas; the balance made up from other production areas. A true estate Darjeeling is your guarantee of quality and genuine Darjeeling tea.

There are 3 main times of year for producing good quality Darjeelings:
  • 1st flush - Springtime harvested teas from late February to mid-April. The young leaves yield a light tea with generally intense muscatel with "point." A gentle afternoon tea.

Soom Darjeeling Tea 25 tea bags 510177 $49.32
50 tea bags 510178 $83.65

• Produced during the height of the first flush
• An excellent example of a first flush Darjeeling
First Flush occurs in Darjeeling from March through to mid April. During this period the tea bushes have once again begun "flushing" (read growing) after the winter dormancy period. Vigorous flushing occurs because the day time temperature has risen 5 to 7 degrees Celsius (from 10/12 C to 20 Celsius); the hours of daylight have increased (the vernal equinox has passed); and despite the fact that the weather is dry there is excellent moisture retention in the soil from the winter rains. All these factors in the rarefied mountain air help produce this stunning tea. The plucking fields of Soom are about 5200 feet above sea level and the terrain is very severe with some of the slopes approaching 45 degrees. The slopes are so steep that the estate still carries the green leaf to the factory by mountain pony. Many of the bushes are over 130 years old but produce remarkable tea; in fact it is not uncommon for some first flush teas to be rushed to Germany in a race similar to the Beaujolais Run.

Dragonmoon Tea 25 tea bags 510322 $23.84

• Full bodied tea with point, flavor and notes of muscatel
The practice of employing poetic or picturesque names to tea varieties is "steeped" in history. Merchants named their blends to distinguish them from competing blends and to create a brand awareness, (18th century marketing concepts that hold true today). They did this by combining special teas from various regions of the world to create "classic" cups of tea. The originality of each blend is a result of a careful alchemy - the tea master attempting to turn green into gold. The ultimate acceptance and test to the early tea masters was their contemporaries copying their blends, or if in a tasting session, a series of positive grunts that were intended to be interpreted as good. These blends very quickly became the signature or standard of exotic parties when hostesses would entertain their guests in grand style, typically on grandiose lawns or on sweeping verandahs.

The Dragonmoon blend is based on a classic blend which combines:
  • Assam - a delicious second flush tea (only produced during June when the weather are "just right") with all the maltiness and smooth characteristics that the world has come to expect of the best Assams.
  • Darjeeling - a second flush high grown Darjeeling from the estate Soom with mysterious and magical muscatel character.
  • Dimbula Ceylon - a February production Dimbula (February is when the Dimbula region peaks in quality) from estate Hatton displaying the coppery depth and flavor of an exceptional Ceylon.
This "menage a trois" has personality and character, yet does not overwhelm. Dragonmoon has the strength and regal character of the dragon yet matched with the luminous quality of an early evening full moon (as seen in the color on the resulting brew). We recommend this tea as a lovely after dinner tea or a midday refresher. You will find the intriguing flavor well suited to your palate.
