• Traditionally used to help support digestion, indigestion, infections and more.
Wormwood is also known by the names Green Ginger, Southernwood, Old Woman, Absinthe, and Absinthium. Native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, this herb is now cultivated in the United States and elsewhere. The plant grows from 2-4 feet in height. The part of this plant used for health benefits is the above ground portion. Wormwood's name is obviously derived from its medicinal property as a disinfectant for which it has been well known since ancient times. An Egyptian papyrus dated 1,600 years before Christ describes this bitter herb in detail. Legend has it that this plant first sprang up on the impressions that marked the serpent's tail as he slithered his way out of the Garden of Eden. Wormwood is from the Anglo Saxon "wermode," meaning "mind preserver." Its alternate name Absinthium is Latin for "without sweetness." It got its generic name Artemisia from Artemis, the Greek name for Diana, because she discovered the plant's virtues and gave them to mankind. Another story has it that it is named for Artemisia, Queen of Caria, who gave her name to the plant after she had benefited from its use. Wherever its name came from, it is one of the bitterest herbs known, even today. Its common name comes from its ability to act as a disinfectant and animals. It was used in granaries to drive away weevils and insects, and can be used as a strewing herb to drive away fleas.

In traditional traditional health, Wormwood preparations were used internally for upset stomach, intestinal atonia, stomach health, stomach ache, liver disorders, bloating, anemia, irregular menstruation, intermittent fever, loss of appetite, and worm infestations. The primary chemical constituents of Wormwood include essential oil (absinthol, azulenes, camphene, cineol, isovaleric acid, pinene, thujone, sesquiterpene lactones, absinthin), bitters (absinthium), flavonoids (quercetin), and polyacetylenes. Absinthin is a narcotic analgesic that affects the medullary portion of the brain concerned with pain and anxiety, inducing a dreamy creative state. It gives people a different view of reality. When used in small amounts, the constituent thujone works as a brain stimulant.

Wormwood is perhaps best known because of the use of its oil to prepare certain beverages, most notably vermouth and absinthe, popular in the late 1880's and early 1900's with artists such as Baudlaire, Degas, Gaugin, Manet, Toulouse Lautrec, Van Gogh and Verlaine. Absinthe caused several cases of brain damage, and even death, and was banned in most places in the early 20th century, although part of the beverage's dangerous properties may have come from copper salts used to give the drink its color. Today, Wormwood is primarily used as a bitter; it has the effect of stimulating and invigorating the whole of the digestive process. It can be used to help support indigestion, especially when due to a deficient quantity or quality of gastric juice. It is also a powerful supportive in supporting worm infestations, especially roundworm and pinworm. Wormwood may also be used to help the body deal with fever and infections. Wormwood helps increase secretions of the liver and gallbladder.

Topical uses of this herb may include its use as a liniment or compress for bruises, sore muscles, bites and pain. It is often used as an insect repellent, and made into a spray to deter pests in organic gardening. A sachet of Wormwood can be used to keep moths away from clothes. The common name Wormwood includes the species Artemisia frigida and Artemisia tilesii, which are used interchangeably with Artemisia absinthium.

The bitter, aerial portions of wormwood benefit disorders associated with the liver and gallbladder. The herb possesses disinfectant, cholagogic, stomachic, and anti-inflammatory actions making it useful for fevers, liver problems, inflammatory complaints of the GI tract. Biochemical analysis has identified absinthol, which is common to all wormwoods including southernmost and mugwort, essential oils, including pinene, cineol, borneol, phenol, cumin, aldehyde, thujone (which is a mild hallucinogenic but because of the bitter taste it would be difficult to ingest enough to satisfy anyone's interest along these lines), and artemisia ketone.

Wormwood is traditionally used to counteract fevers, support various aches and pains (like willow bark, which is another bitter), hot stomach pains, stomach health, jaundice and a healthy liver. It also kills and drives away various unwanted organisims.

There are many closely related species of wormwood found around the world that have powerful therapeutic properties. One related species (Artemisia annua) contains a sesquiterpene lactone with a peroxide group attached, which is referred to as artemisinin. The amount of artemisinin varies according to the growing season and decreases the longer it is stored. Microscopic analysis has determined that this compound works by destroying various and specific membranes of unwanted organisms, causing them to starve to death eventually. Clinical studies have demonstrated a 100% support rate in 485 cases of tertian malaria and a 92.7% support rate in 105 cases of subtertian cerebral malaria. For these reasons the U.S. Army is presently investigating Artemisia annua to help support drug-resistant malaria. It is further endorsed as a natural substitute for chloroquine, to help avoid malaria for those traveling abroad.

As for one further use for wormwood, Dioscorides, the early Roman herbalist, described the tea as an effective pesticide to spray on various garden plants to rid them of pests and parasites.

For the reduction and support of fevers and intestinal parasites, take a recommended dose two or three times daily.

For intestinal parasites combine equal parts of the powders of wormwood, garlic, goldenseal, black walnut hulls and half parts each of licorice root and ginger. Take two capsules four times daily for a week, ideally fasting on an exclusive diet of brown rice, and either black beans or Japanese azuki beans or the Indian kicharee.

Wormwood is traditionally used to help stimulate appetite and to help support dyspeptic complaints, including stomach aches and gallbladder ailments (biliary dyskinesia). It is topically used to help support skin disorders.

Wormwood
Artemisia absinthium L.

Family: Asteraceae.

Other Names: Absinthe; grande absinthe, herbe d absinthe (French); Wermut, Absinth (German); assenzio (Italian); ajenjo (Spanish).

Description: A perennial herb of up to 1 m high. The leaves are pinnately compound and silvery in colour, with deeply dissected leaflets. Numerous small, pale yellow flower heads are borne along the branch ends.

Origin:Europe and western Asia; presently also in parts of Asia, North and South America. The main commercial source is eastern Europe.

Parts Used: Whole herb - mainly the upper leafy parts - (Absinthii herba).

Therapeutic Category: Bitter tonic, dyspepsia, bile tract disorders.

Active Ingredients: The bitter taste and activity of the herb is ascribed to several sesquiterpene lactones, of which absinthin and artabsin are the main compounds. The essential oil is rich in mono- and sesquiterpenoids, especially alpha-thujone, but also beta-thujone and chrysanthenyl acetate.

Health Effects: The bitter compounds and volatile oil are responsible for the effectiveness of the herb as an aromatic bitter and for its useful health-supporting properties. Thujone enhances the effects of alcohol but is a convulsant poison at high doses. Chronic thujone poisoning causes delirium and hallucinations. The painter Van Gogh produced some of his masterpieces under the influence of absinthe.

Notes: Several species of Artemisia are used traditionally. The European A. abrotanum (southernwood) has frequently been used in the past as a bitter tonic, to help support menstrual disorders and as a disinfectant to rid children of threadworm.

Status: Pharm; Comm. E+; ESCOP 4.

Preparation and Dosage: A hot water infusion (up to 3 g of dry herb per day) is taken before a meal (or as a cholagogue after a meal). Can also be used to help support oral applications are extracts and solid preparations.

Wormwood is found growing naturally in mild and temperate climate zones of Europe, North Africa, and Asia and is now cultivated in North America. Because of its attractive appearance and aroma, wormwood is often used in both residential and commercial landscaping. The wormwood has grayish-green leaves and can reach about 3 feet in height. The plant is covered with find hairs and produces yellow flowers that bloom in summer.

The oil of produced by the wormwood shrub contains two chemical compounds (toxins), thujone and isothujone. This plant also contains absithin and anabsinthin, which give the shrub a strong bitter taste. Both absithin and anabsinthin are believed to maintain healthy stomach and gallbladder function. Additionally, Wormwood may aid the body in preserving a healthy balance of friendly intestinal bacteria.

Medicinal Usage

Wormwood can be used as a bitter tonic to help stimulate appetite and aid digestion. It can also be tried to help support liver and gallbladder disorders. All of the Artemicias mentioned above possess emmenagogic, diuretic, and antiseptic qualities.

A. absinthium contains thujone as the major component of the essential oil along with beta-caryophyllene, pinene, sabinene, phellandrene, and azulenes. Absinthin - a bitter principle-is found in the leaves as well. In large doses, thujone causes convulsions.

Wormwood and Roman wormwood can be used to flavor vermouth. Wormwood was the main ingredient in the now outlawed alcoholic beverage absinthe. Studies have suggested that absinthe's effects may be similar to marijuana, as they may both interact with the same central nervous system receptors.

General Herb Information

A. absinthium, common wormwood, is a coarse sprawling perennial native to Europe and naturalized in the northeastern United States. This bitter-tasting herb reaches a four-foot height and has finely divided gray leaves with rounded oblong segments. The nodding, one-eighth inch wide, yellow flowers are difficult to imagine as members of the same family to which sunflowers belong. They bloom in late summer.

A. abrotanum, southernwood, is a shrubby perennial, usually aboutthree feet tall. The finely divided leaves are smooth and green, with narrow linear leaf segments. The tiny yellowish-white flowers are seldom seen in the herb garden.

A. vulgaris, mugwort, is a six-foot perennial with a creeping rhizome, native to Eurasia. The four inch-long, oval, divided leaves are dark green on the upper surface with tiny whitish hairs underneath. The purple-red, one-eighth inch wide flowers occur in loose panicles in late summer. Its close relative, A. Douglasiana, is similar in appearance and native to the western United States.

A. pontica, Roman wormwood, is the most delicate appearing Artemisia. It is a short (two-foot) shrubby perennial native to southeastern Europe. The leaves are finely divided and covered with tiny gray hairs. The one-eighth inch wide pale yellow flowers are borne on loose panicles.

These plants are easily propagated by root division with the exception of southernwood which is best propagated from cuttings. Root divisions can be made in the spring or fall. The wormwoods can be grown from seed, but the seed is tiny and difficult to handle. Sow on the soil's surface, as it needs light to germinate. Germination takes place in about three weeks. Give plants eighteen-inch spacings.

Wormwoods will do best in a fairly rich or poor dry soil. Partial shade or full sun are tolerable. A neutral to slightly alkaline soil is best. Both mugwort and Roman wormwood spread by root runners and must be given room to spread or be kept under control. The leaves of wormwood secrete a bitter principle which inhibits the growth of other plants. Give wormwood at least a three-foot buffer between it and adjacent plants. Mints and oregano growing within three feet of the wormwood were about six inches high, where plants outside the perimeter were two feet tall and lush. Wormwoods are winter hardy. The whole herb is harvested when plants come into bloom.

The leaves of wormwood and southernwood can be placed in drawers to deter moths and beetles. Replenish the supply every six months.

General Herb Information

Wormwood

Several varieties of Wormwood are used for health, industrial and culinary purposes; all have inconspicuous yellow flower heads in loose panicles.
Propagation: By seed, slow to germinate; by cuttings; by root division.

Nature of Plant: Common Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) - A bushy plant 3 to 4 feet tall with much cut, grayish, silky leaves; useful for background of border or high spot in garden.

Beach Wormwood, Dusty Miller, Old Woman (I. stelleriana) stems are 2 feet long but are creeping, leaves are white, broad, deeply cut and feltlike to the touch; spreads rapidly and is a good ground cover for sandy soil in a sunny spot; terminal flower clusters droop so that they look like tassels.

Fringed Wormwood, Colorado Mountain Sage, Mountain Fringe (I. frigida), lower part of stems is woody but upper part is graceful with its soft, silvery, slender leaves; attractive in flower borders and in flower arrangements with its 18-inch high delicate, leafy stems.

Roman Wormwood (A. pontica) much branching, little shrub, 2 feet high with finely cut, lacy, greenish gray foliage. Can be useful for edging of borders, particularly for a gray garden; must be trimmed and kept from spreading.

Silky Wormwood (A. mutellina) grows to 6 inches; makes a silvery mount with its finely cut leaves; very decorative for an edging.

Sweet Wormwood (A. annua), a yellow-green, very lacy, broad leaf, grows sometimes to 5 feet high, much branched and very fragrant; graceful for flower arrangements.

Spacing of Mature Plants: Common 2 feet; Beach 8 inches; the others from 12 to 15 inches.

Cultural Requirements: All varieties thrive in rather poor, light, but well-drained soil in sun or shade, though sun is preferred; special notice must be given to Common Wormwood. Soil for it must contain clay and be a little heavier than for the others and should be dug deeply because the root reaches very far below the surface. Common also likes a little more shade. Since plants grow taller they are inclined to fall and the stems twist, therefore plants should be staked in June; in the early spring older parts of plant are cut out; it is likely to winterkill unless cut back in fall and mulched with manure and leaves.

Uses

Common - Leafy Top: (Health) In fevers and joint pain, disinfectant, antiseptic, stomachic; (Industrial) in absinthe and liniments; (Culinary) lay leafy tops along back of a roasting goose to cut grease.

Beach - Whole Herb: Used to fatten cattle; (Health) disinfectant, in fevers.

Fringed - Whole Herb: (Health) Fevers, joint pain, fever, diphtheria, induces perspiration, mild cathartic.

Roman - Leafy Top: (Industrial) In vermouth, often used instead of Common; (Health) applications for swellings, produces perspiration, vulnerary, bitter stomachic.

Silky - Peel of Bark: (Health) Bitter stomachic; (Industrial) in absinthe.

Sweet - Whole Herb: (Industrial) Oil in perfume (gives odor like basil).

Dosage: Generally not more than a teaspoon to tablespoonful at a time of the infusion.

DIANA06-11-2008

My first introduction to wormwood tea. Didn't realize how bitter wormwood really is. 3 stars because it was my lack of knowledge of the herb.

Ines06-26-2007

beyond expectations

I had never tried Wormwood before and at first I was amazed at how bitter it is, but then I got used to it and used more. It really works and I will buy it again.

Very Satisfied

GLOBAL01-08-2009

Hi, Yes, everything was fine with the order. Thank you. I took it every day for 15 days or so and instead of it killing the parasites, it made them come out onto my skin. This was diagnosed in march as blastosis hominis, but now drs are confused. They say parasites don't crawl on the skin by exiting the butt, so I am back to square one. Sorry probably more info than you wanted to hear, but your product is good for expeling and purging the microscopic critters, but they go all over my skin instead of dying. Thanks again,

Jasan09-18-2008

Parasite cleansing formula

for me personally it did not help me, but it did not cause me any illness either, so i hope it helps someone else. My problem is unique and very hard to cure. I think it is blastosis hominis.
