Valerian is a tallish plant with clusters of pink or, less commonly, white flowers. A perennial grows to 4-5 feet. Leaves strongly divided, pinnate with lance-shaped leaflets; lower ones toothed. Tiny, pale pink to whitish, tubular flowers, grow in three-forked terminal heads in tight clusters; each flower has a small, inrolled calyx at the base; as the fruits form, calyces become feathery parachutes. Blooms June to July.

Medicinal properties of Valerian may include: Calmative, antispasmodic, nerve tonic, nervine, sedative, anodyne, and carminative, aromatic, emmenagogue.

Valerian can also be tried to help support hypochondria, irritability, mild spasmodic affections, diarrhea, headaches, croup, hysteria, convulsions, vertigo, nervous cough, delirium, neuralgia, muscle cramps, gas pains, stomach cramps, spasms, palpitations, gas, colic, melancholy, panic attacks, emotional stress, PMS, menstrual cramps, despondency, insomnia. It is a potential supportive for fevers and colds. Valerian may be useful for expelling phlegm from the throat and chest, it can be tried as a disinfectant when everything else fails, and may be used for shortness of breath and wheezing. Valerian tea can be tried as an enema and externally as a wash for sores, wounds, chronic skin problems, and pimples.

Like many botanicals, valerian has a long history. Named the "Herb of the 19th century," is recognized worldwide for the relaxing effect it seems to have on the body. Often, in Europe, it is tried to help support anxiety. Valerian does not taste very good, but it has few unpleasant side effects. For centuries, valerian has been a popular choice by herbalists when trying to help support panic attacks or nervous tension.

The common name of valerian is heal-all, which comes from the Latin word valere, meaning "to be well". It is believed valerian is the spikenard referred to in the Bible as a perfume brought from the East.

Valerian has a distinctive, rather unpleasant smell, and was aptly called phu by the Greek physician Galen. In recent years, it has been well researched, with chemicals called valepotriates developing in valerian extracts. These can be used to support a healthy nervous system.

As a sedative, passion flower is the preferred herb for helping support insomnia and leaves no hangover. As an antispasmodic, it is helpful in central nervous system disorders, asthma (with much spasmodic activity), and hysteria. It supports nerve pain in complaints like neuralgia and shingles. Passion Flower can be used to help support nervous restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, melancholy, alcoholism and headaches. Passion Flower's gentle sedative properties produce a relaxing effect, reducing nervous over-activity and panic, and making it a mild and non-addictive herbal tranquilizer. It is an effective calmant and analgesic; its effects are primarily on the nervous system.

Hops is best known as the preservative and flavor used to make beer. However, hops can also be used by herbalists for centuries for nervous tension and the nervous system, anxiety, stress, sleeplessness/insomnia, kidney problems, urinary tract, digestion, constipation, pain, appetite, headaches and menstruation problems. Hops acts as a natural sedative to calm the nerves and help reduce stress and anxiety. Hops also promotes a good night's rest by counter-acting the effects of sleeplessness and insomnia.

Hops is rich in vitamin C and B-complex, and also contains various minerals. The natural disinfectant properties found in hops is beneficial in promoting healthy kidney functions, supporting urinary tract health concerns and painful urination.

Hops is beneficial as a digestive aid, stimulating the production of digestive fluids. Hops has been known to help stimulate the appetite and support constipation and painful menstruation and headaches.

• Traditionally used to help support digestion, flatulence, headache, insomnia, stress and anxiety and more.

This famed flavoring agent for beer is a climbing vine with green, cone-shaped flowers; it's the dried cones of the female flowers that are used in brewing, and in health. Hops are related to hemp and marijuana, but don't produce a high when they're smoked.

Potential Health Benefits

Hops are recommended to curb restlessness and anxiety and to help support sleep disturbaIlces by Commission E, which also endorses hops for use as a sedative. Traditionally, pillows stuffed with hops have been used by people with insomnia.

Scientific Evidence

Hops contain bitter principles called humtllene and lupulene (which give the sharp taste to English beers called bitters) and 2-methyl-3-butne-2--O1, a chemical with sedative properties. The active principle of hops is located in a yellow powder, called lupulin, that surrounds the seed of the fruit.

A 1996 German double-blind study found hops as effective as the drug Rohypnol when it comes to inducing sleep, with fewer side effects. Hops also contain phytoestrogens, substances similar to estrogen, which may help avoid coronary issues and osteoporosis, although Commission E didn't address these larger possible effects of hops.

Hops

Humulus lupulus L.

English Common Names

Hop, common hop, English hop, European hop. "Hop" refers to a hop plant; "hops" refers to the hops of commerce, i.e., the female cones.

Morphology

Hop is a high-climbing, wind-pollinated, perennial vine, sometimes extending more than 10 m. The vines climb by twining, and are assisted in holding onto surfaces by two-hooked hairs that resemble miniature grappling hooks. The annual, above-ground stem is killed by frost each year, re-growth occurring each season from perennial underground rhizomes and from buds on the rootstock (crown). The rootstocks can live for half a century. The perennial crown becomes woody with age, with heavy, rough, dark brown bark. The hop plant is propagated primarily vegetatively rather than by seeds. More than one hundred cultivars have been named, each essentially a clone. Many of these are of hybrid origin, and have been reproduced asexually for centuries. Some plants have male flowers, others have female flowers; occasionally plants bear both kinds. In most natural populations of hop, female plants are about twice as numerous as males. Because the female plants produce the commercially valuable hops (the cones or fruit-clusters), and also are of greater ornamental value than the males. the iatter are generally discarded as soon as they can be recognized. However, a few males are usually pianted deliberately in England because they increase yield and it is not economical to grow most English cultivars seedless. Male flowers are not organized into "cones" but are in loose inflorescences (panicles). In most hop plantations, males are regarded as a nuisance, since their pollen fertilizes the females, and helps reduce the formation of waluabie "seedless hops" that are predominantly preferred in commerce. A resin with the valuable brewing constituents is produced in yellow glands on the bracteoles of the cone, and on the seeds.

Classification and Geography

Humulus has three species, indigenous in north-temperate areas. Only the perennial H. lupulus is native to North America. The Asian annual Hop H. japonicus Sieb. & Zucc. is a naturalized weed of eastern North America, including southern Ontario and southwestern Quebec.

There are five varieties of H. lupulus: var. lupulus of Eurasia; var. cordifolius (Miquel) Maximowicz of Japan; var. neomexicanus Nelson & Cockerell, the predominant wild hop in the western Cordillera of North America, found from Mexico to British Columbia; var. pubescens E. Small, of the midwestern US; and var. lupuloides E. Small, of eastern North America, which includes most wild hops from the Prairie Provinces to the maritime provinces. The distribution of the two indigenous Canadian varieties is shown on the map. In much of Canada and the US the European var. lupulus is found as an escaped plant from past use in brewing, or as a persisting ornamental around abandoned homesteads. Variety lupulus is the ancestor of most brewing cultivars used today. However, both in Japan and in North America, the local wild hops hybridized with the imported European hop to produce unique cultivars.

Ecology

Hop plants frequently occur in moist thickets, slopes, river banks, alluvial woods, or along fences and hedges, often in sandy soils. The plants grow best in rich, alluvial or deep sandy or gravelly barns. Well-drained soils are especially beneficial in areas subject to frost heaving of the roots. Hop is adapted to a wide range of temperate climates. Although it is quite tolerant of low temperatures, good snow cover can reduce winterkili in very cold regions. Hop is somewhat shade tolerant, but prefers full sun.

Medicinal Uses

The high oil and resin content of hops contributed to a reputation, greatly exaggerated, for valuable health properties, and hops have a long history of use in traditional health. Hop resin is bacteriostatic (against gram-positive organisms) and this factor may lend some credibility to use of hop in former times for support of certain types of epidermal sores and irritations, and infections such as irritated lungs. The hop plant is related to the hemp (marihuana) plant, tempting some to try to smoke the leaves. However, hops are devoid of the mood-altering chemicals found in marihuana. Today, hop extract can be used as an aromatic bitter principle in phannaceutical preparations and in shampoos. Extracts are used in skin creams and lotions in Europe for their alleged skin-softening properties.

There is a long Eurasian tradition of using hops to induce sleep, including putting the cones in pillows, and planting hop beside bedrooms. Remarkably, Indians independently adopted the soporific use of the plant. The tranquilJizing effect commonly alleged in foildore for hops may have a logical basis in a sedative volatile alcohol, dimethylvinyl carbinol, which comprises up to 0.15% of the dried leaves.

Chemistry

The commercial value of hops is due to resins which give beer its bitterness, and essential oils which contribute to flavor and aroma. Tannins are also present, which give astringency to preparations made with hops. Over 200 essential oil constituents have been identified, chiefly myrcene, humulene, and caryophyllene, with minor amounts of dipentene, linalool, farnesenee and methyl nonyl ketone. The important brewing resins include alpha-acids (a-acids) and the beta-acids (J3-acids), also referred to as humulones and lupulones, respectively. Both contribute bitterness to beer, but the a-acids are much more intense than the 13-acids. The a-acids are a mixture of chemical analogues, including humulone, cohumulone, and adhumulone; similarly the f3-acids are a mixture of lupulone, colupulone, and adlupulone. Brewers have long recognized that North cultivars have a higher content of alpha acids and produce beer of stronger aroma. Bitter hops are very important commercially, and nearly all owe a great deal to germplasm. Content of a-acid varies from about 3.5% in traditional European types to as much as 15% in newer bitter varieties. The European forms of hop have a relatively low content of "soft resins" (Α- and Β-acids collectively), a ratio of ΑΒ approaching one, low cohumulone, moderately low essential oil content, and relatively low myrcene in the essential oil fraction. Native hop plants are quite high in cohumulone and colupulone content, and have a pungent, unpleasant aroma.

Non-medicinal Uses

Hop has been used through recorded history for various culinary and household purposes, although it is chiefly known as a brewing ingredient. Hop extracts and oil have been used to flavor products, yeast, beverages other than beers, frozen dairy desserts, candy, gelatins, puddings, baked goods, various confections, chewing gums, and condiments. In the past, yeast for bread-making was prepared by culturing wild yeast in a decoction of hops and water. The hops added flavor and apparently kept the yeast from spoiling by virtue of their antiseptic properties.

Agricultural and Commercial Aspects

The cultivation of hop was not introduced into England until the close of the 15th century. The hop was brought to North America and grown in the early 17th century. The first commercial brewery in Canada was founded in Quebec about 1668 by the Intendant Jean Talon, to control the intemperate use of stronger drink. By the middle of the 19th century, New England and New York produced the bulk of the hops of the New World. However, by the early 20th century, the Pacific Coast became the leading hop-producing area in North America. In the 1920's hop growing in New York was practically wiped out by downy mildew and by Prohibition. Similarly, in eastern Canada commercial hop growing was phased out by the end of the Second World War, but became established in British Columbia.

About two dozen countries, including Canada, raise substantial commercial crops of hops. Germany is the largest producer, followed by the US. Other centers of hop production include Russia, China, England, the former Czechoslovakia, and the former Yugoslavia. About 114,000 tonnes are produced worldwide annually, on more than 90,000 ha.

Hop is a good example of a crop that has been substantially improved recently through incorporation of wild geimplasm. A wild hop from Manitoba contributed to the improvement of many standard brewing varieties. Indeed, the improved cultivars axount for an ever-increasing proportion of production. The contribution of wild hop germplasm was recently valued at almost $90,000,000 annually in North America. The use of hop shoots as a vegetable is an interesting possibility. Young shoots (6-10 cm long) are often consumed as a pot-herb, like asparagus. These spears can be boiled for 2-3 mm, and then boiled in a change of water until tender. When steamed for 5 mm and served with melted butter or cheese sauce, the shoots taste much like asparagus. In hop-producing areas of Europe, blanched hop spears are often served in fine restaurants. Hop farmers generally have surplus rhizomes from which the spears can be harvested, but because of their desire to maintain possession of unique hop strains, they may not be willing to sell them. In any event, there is a need to select strains that produce tasty shoots rather than good brews.

Given the substantial cultivation and availability of hop for food and flavoring purposes, growing the plant specifically as a nutraceutical crop seems unwarranted.

Myths, Legends, Tales, Folklore, and Interesting Facts
  • St. Hildegard (1098-1 179, also known as Hildegard of Bingen and Hildegardis de Pinguia), was an abbess who established a convent and a Benedictine nunnery near the Rhine River. She was one of the most remarkable women the world has ever known, becoming an adviser to popes, kings, and various dignitaries. She wrote on nature and medicine, and was a mystical and spiritual visionary who interpreted Oriental, Judeo-Christian and Greek philosophy. St. Hildegard is often credited with being the first person to popularize the use of hops in brewing.
  • In England about 1500, after learning of how well hops preserved beer in continental Europe, British brewers started adding hops to ale (sweet beer made without hops), turning it into bitter beer. Henry Vifi (1491-1547), responding to a petition to ban hop, described as "a wicked weed that would endanger the people" outlawed the use of hop by brewers. His son, Edward VI (1537-1553), rescinded the ban in 1552.
  • Charles Darwin entertained himself while sick in bed in 1882 by studying a hop plant growing on his window-sill. He noted that the tip of the stem completed a revolution in 2 hours. The patent office of the US once granted a pat- ent to a man who claimed to have "invented" the hop's habit of winding from left to right (i.e., circling clockwise, viewed so that the twining stem is growing towards the observer).

A six-pack a day keeps . . . just kidding. Actually, sober-minded Commission E recommends the use of cut, powdered hops or extract in a single dose of 0.5 grams. If drops are used, 1 or 2 drops are the right amount. Hop tea can be made by pouring boiling water over a heaping teaspoonful of the ground herb and steeping for 10-15 minutes.

General Preparation and Dosage

A dose of 0.5 g, taken as an infusion, is recommended. Hops or extracts therof have become popular as an ingredient of sleep-promoting teas and especially of numerous sedative herbs.

Hop Plant
Humulus lupulus L.

Family: Cannabaceae.

Other Names: Houblon (French); Hopfen (German); Luppolo (Italian); lupulo (Spanish).

Description: A perennial creeper (vine) of up to 10 m in height with branches emerging each year from a woody rhizome or crown. The leaves are deeply lobed, with toothed margins. Male and female flowers occur on separate plants (to help avoid pollination, the males are usually eradicated; females are propagated vegetatively). Hops is the cone-like female flower cluster, with several small flowers hidden by overlapping, leafy structures (bracts and bracteoles; they bear numerous orange-yellow glands, producing a resinous exudate).

Origin: Northem temperate areas (Asia, Europe and North America). Hop plants have been cultivated for centuries to provide hops for beer brewing.

Parts Used: Hops - the dried, cone-like female flower clusters (Lupuli strobulus) or hops grains (the small glands obtained by sieving; Lupuli glandula).

Therapeutic Category: Sedative, bitter tonic (amarum).

Uses and Properties: Hops has a long history of use as a traditional bitter tonic and diuretic. In modern times, however, the main emphasis is on the sedative and calming effects. It can be used to help support mood and sleep disturbances, anxiety and restlessness.

Active Ingredients: The bitter substances in hops (up to 5%) are prenylated derivatives of 1-acyl-phloroglucinol and include lupulone and humulone as main compounds. Upon storage, they are slowly split through oxidation to produce a C5-alcohol, 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol. Hops also contains several phenolics (2-4%), such as rutin, quercetrin, and proanthocyanidins, and up to 1% essential oil, with caryophyllene humulene and beta-myrcene as main terpenoids.

Health Effects: The sedative activity appears to be due to 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol that is already present in the drug or which is formed internally after oral intake of hops. Humulone and lupulone are considered to be disinfectant (they act as preservatives in beer, but have little effect on yeasts and fungi) and are probably oestrogenic. The bitter compounds stimulate appetite and gastric secretions.

Status: Traditional health; Pharm.; Comm. E+; ESCOP 4.

Results of European trials strongly suggest that hops can be used as an effective, and very safe, sleeping aid. Users go to sleep more quickly when they have taken hops, and they awake with clearer heads than when using prescription sleeping pills. There are no reports of serious toxicity. The phytoestrogens contained in hops may provide additional benefits in terms of improving cardiovascular health and supporting menopausal symptoms.

Although we associate hops with traditional English beer, the plant is a comparative newcomer, introduced from Germany in the 16th century. Enthusing about the hop's many virtues, John Gerard, writing in 1597, urges that "beer" be considered a "physical drink to keep the body in health [rather] than an ordinary drink for the quenching of our thirst". A few years earlier in 1562, William Turner noted in his "New Herbal" that he was amazed that, given the herb's numerous properties, physicians did not "use it more in health".

Just as in brewing, the female flowers or strobiles can be used to support health. They are strongly sedating, so should be avoided by those liable to melancholy. Their anaphrodisiac action may be familiar to beer drinkers: excessive consumption can lead to loss of desire.

This anaphrodisiac action is due to oestrogen-like compounds in the plant. Women hop pickers often experienced menstrual irregularities and early periods while working in the hop fields and breathing in the herb's potent aromatic oils.

Hops contain between 30,000 and 300,000 IU of oestrogen in 100 g, so it is hardly surprising that beer has such a dramatic effect on the male sex drive.

Hops are also bitter, so they make an effective digestive stimulant. Hops are also a good restorative for the nervous system. Hops can be used to help support stress, irritability and anxiety and, of course, and insomnia. Hop strobiles (the female flowers, leafy and cone-shaped) oxidise rapidly, so properties can vary markedly on drying and after storing for any time. Fresher herb is best for insomnia - the hops in hop pillows need to be changed every few months to ensure continuing activity. Dried hops tend to be more restorative and helping to stimulate for the nervous system.

Hop heads are regarded as tonic, bitter and depuratives. They are used in the form of tea, rarely as an extract, in skin problems and rickets. Hops stimulates the appetite and helps digestion. It supports vital energy and the vigor of the organs. A strong dose quickens the pulse, raises body heat, helps stimulate the nervous system causing the head to become heavy, the limbs to become tired and even producing vomiting, but without giddiness or cephalalgia.

Besides their unquestionable tonic properties, hops have been regarded, perhaps with less reason, as diuretic, diaphoretic and disinfectant. However, its sedative properties are still contested. English doctors have used it to combat insomnia, making the patient sleep on a pillow filled with sweet-smelling hops. In homeopathy, hops can be used as a sedative and depurative. All the animals eat hops and bees seek out their strobiles.

Name

Humulus lupulus L., Cannabinaceae, and Lupul strobulus, commonly known as hops, humulus, lupulus, hop bine, and willow wolf in English. In French, it is Houblon grimpant; in German, Hopfenzapfen or just Hopen.

Source

This herb is a perennial with green flowers that bloom in late summer. Herbal products are made from a part of the plant called the strobile, essentially a cone-like fruit. Inside the fruit, surrounding the seed, is a yellow granular powder called lupulin; it contains the active ingredients. Hops are, of course, cultivated worldwide for beer production.

History

The common name, hops, is thought to be from the Old English hopen, meaning "to climb." In the wild, leaves of this herb tend to be found growing around willow trees (hence the name "willow wolf"). Since Medieval times, hops have been grown for beer-making, and pillows stuffed with hops were used during the Middle Ages to help support insomnia. Oils from hops are also used in perfume manufacturing.

Traditional Support Uses

For anxiety and sleep disturbances, as an antispasmodic, and as a digestive aid.

Commission E Recommendations

Hops can be used to help support anxiety, insomnia, mood disturbance, restlessness and sleep disturbances.

Possible Effects

The main ingredients in hops are resins and compounds known as alpha and beta acids. The alpha acids consist of humulone, cohumulone, and adhumulone. The beta acids are lupuplone, colupulone, and adlupulone. Both types of acids tend to break down and disappear with storage. The ability of hops to induce sleep is thought to be due to the presence of a chemical called 2-methyl-3-butne-2-ol. Once the alpha acids enter the body, some of them are converted to 2-methyl-3-butne-2-ol.

In clinical, double-blind controlled clinical trials using health volunteers, hops induced sleep efficiently. Equally important, volunteers supported with hops had less of a hangover the next morning. Hops also contain substances called phytoestrogens - molecules that in some way look and act like estrogens. Many believe that phytoestrogen can reduce coronary artery problems, osteoporosis, and other age-related health problems.

Dosage

Hops may be used two to three times a day and, again, at bedtime. The standard dose is one cup of tea made with 0.5 to 1 gram of dried strobiles. The same amount could be taken in capsule form, though it may take longer to exert its effect.

Medicinal Usage

Hops are stomachic, tonic, nervine, diuretic, anodyne, sedative, and soporific. A pillow stuffed with hops will help an insomniac sleep. Moisten the hops with water before going to bed so rustling strobiles don't keep you awake (assuming you're either the insomniac or sleeping in the same bed with one). An infusion of the strobiles will help support muscle spasms. A poultice is used externally as an anodyne on rheumatic joints and muscle pains. The bitter-tasting tea will help stimulate appetite and calm nervous tension. The tea is soothing and serves as an antispasmodic in delirium tremens. Add one-half ounce of the herb to boiling water and give four-ounce doses of this infusion.

Ripe hops contain a yellow granular powder called lupulin. It contains the plant's active principles-an essential oil mainly composed of humulene, myrcene, beta-caryophyllene, and farnesene. Resinous bitter principles comprise up to 12 percent of the weight of the strobiles-mostly bitter acids, including lupulone and humulone. Over 100 compounds have been found in the essential oil.

Hops are best known as a flavoring for beer, but the plant has many uses. The spent hops left over from beer production make a good compost and mulch, especially for nursery trees. The ashes have been used in glass manufacturing. A pulp of the stems has been used to make paper and cardboard. Textiles such as yarns and strings are made from the stem fiber, and the stalks can be used for weaving baskets.

General Herb Information

Hops are native to Europe, Asia, and North America. The genus's two species are grown in gardens - H. lupulus which has a perennial root stock and annual shoots growing thirty feet or more in a season, and H.japonicus, a rapid-growing annual creating a graceful festoonery. The leaves of H. lupulus resemble grape leaves. They are rough, hairy, three to five lobed, coarsely toothed, about as broad as wide (three to five inches), and are in an opposite arrangement, though leaves at the end of shoots may be arranged singly. The twining stems, spiraling clockwise, are tough, flexible, and fibrous. Some plants produce racemes of male flowers from the leaf axils. Others produce female flowers and the plump, rounded, cone-like fruits called strobiles. The strobiles are about 11/4 inches long and are characterized by translucent, yellowish-green, papery bracts, each covering a seed (unless the variety is seedless). Hops flower from July to August.

Hops can be grown from seed but are generally propagated by dividing the young shoots from the main crown in spring or fall, or by cuttings rooted from older shoots and suckers in late summer. The first year, seed-grown hops usually develop slowly. Plant root cuttings in a hill-three roots per hill, spaced eighteen inches apart at the corners of an equilateral triangle. Keep well-cultivated and free from weeds.

Hops require a deeply dug, rich, moist soil with full sun. Soil pH should be between 5 and 8. By midsummer, the prickly vines may stretch from fifteen to thirty feet. Once rapid growth begins, water frequently. Cut the stems back after they are hit by a fall frost and add the refuse to your compost pile. In autumn, dress the roots with compost. Hops may require more care than some herbs, but they are worth the effort. Trained over a trellis, they create enclosed spaces in the garden-to say nothing of their food and health value.

In early fall when the strobiles begin to feel firm, turn an amber color, and are covered with a yellow dust, harvest on a clear day. The strobiles will spoil rapidly if not quickly dried soon after harvest. For good keeping, the moisture must be reduced from 65 to 80 percent to about 12 percent. Place in an oven no warmer than 1500°F and leave its door ajar.

As the young shoots appear in the spring, they can be eaten as an asparagus substitute. Blanch the shoots by hilling the crowns with dirt the previous fall. This makes milder-flavored and tenderer shoots. Eat only young shoots. The older ones tend to be tough and bitter. The flavor is nutty and pleasing, though the texture is often dry and gritty. At one time, a hill of hops was part of every English vegetable garden.
