• Traditionally used to help support blood pressure, cholesterol, digestion, indigestion, coughs, morning sickness and much more.

• Traditionally used to help support congestion, infections, digestion, sore throat, bad breath and more.
Thyme, Thymus vulgaris L. [Fam. Lamiaceae], was traditionally used to help support coughs and catarrh (mucous) of the upper respiratory tract. The German Commission E also lists thyme leaves and oil for helping support poor digestion.

In European folk tradition, thyme leaf tea can also be tried to help support nervous disorders. Experimentally, oil of thyme lowers arterial pressure, can increase heart rhythms, respiratory volume, lowers blood pressure and alleviates toothaches. The oil is strongly disinfectant, being 25 times stronger than phenol, but, in contrast, it is less injurious to the skin.

Because essential oils are very toxic and irritating to the skin when applied directly, it is important to use thyme oil externally only as a wash made from the leaf tea or as part of liniment or massage oil blend. However, pure thyme oil is often used as a natural preservative for health and culinary oil blends, especially for encapsulated fish oil blends because of its antiseptic and antioxidant properties.

New studies on a monoterpene found in thyme oil called limonene (found more abundantly in citrus rinds) show that it very effectively helps individuals avoid developing abnormal growths on their skin (when taken internally).

Limonene also has demonstrated reduction efficacy in preclinical models of breast and colon abnormal growths. Limonene has chemo-reducer activity against rodent mammary, skin, liver, lung and upper stomach abnormal growths. Limonene also has chemotherapeutic activity against rodent mammary and pancreatic abnormal growths and is under evaluation in Phase I clinical trials with humans.

Another monoterpene from thyme oil, geraniol, has also been shown to have tremendous activity in combating abnormal growths. Geraniol also has in vivo activity against abnormal white blood cells. Monoterpenes block cholesterol production within the body, which keeps excess estrogen formation and related stimulation of abnormal cell division.

This is one of the most powerful of the popular herbs which is used in astringent and cleansing infusions and as an antiseptic conditioner for the hair. Face packs and steamers using thyme are particularly good for cleansing greasy skin that may have blocked pores. Because thyme is so pungent it makes a strongly perfumed herbal oil which can be used to great effect in body rubs and massage oils where it not only smells very pleasant but also eases aches and pains, can help improve the quality of the skin, and deodorizes. The essential oil of thyme smells very strongly of the true herb. It is antiseptic and used dermatologically to clear skin complaints.

That sprig of thyme - a member of the mint family that's likely to adorn a garden or flavor soups and stews-can also be used to support rejuvenating. Thymus vulgaris, approved by Commission E, is domestic garden thyme. (Wild thyme, Thymus serpyllum, is closely related and has a similar composition.) Both species of thyme grow wild in North America, Asia, and Europe.

Potential Health Benefits

Commission E endorses thyme to help support the symptoms of whooping cough and coughs. Modern health practitioners evidently agrees; thyme is an ingredient in both Listerine and Vicks VapoRub.

Scientific Evidence

Chemists have identified the active ingredients in thyme oil as thymol and caracol. Both chemicals disinfect and are expectorants. Commission E doesn't cite clinical studies in its monograph, but thyme has a long history of safe use in Germany, and thyme-based medications are widely used there. Specifically, Commission E reviewed the properties of dried thyme leaves and flowers.

How to Use the Herb

Commission E recommends 1-2 grams of the herb for a cup of tea "several times a day as needed," or 1-2 grams of fluid extract 1 to 3 times per day.

For wild thyme, which is slightly weaker than the garden variety the commission recommends taking 6 grams per day. If you're unsure what type of thyme you have, try taking the smaller dose.

Name

Thymus serpyllum L. Fries (Labiatae) commonly called wild thyme. In French, it is Serpolet a feuilles étroites; in German, Feld-Thymian or Kleiner Kostets. Hundreds of related (some distantly) plants are referred to by the same name, making the situation for consumers quite confusing. Products sold in the United States often contain the dried leaves of related plants, such as Thymus pulegioides L., and T. Praecox subsp. articus. Thymus vulgaris L., also called garden thyme or common thyme, grows robustly in and European gardens. In French, it is called Thym cultivé; in German, Garten-Thymian.

Source

Wild thyme (Thymus serpyllum) is native to Europe and does not grow in the United States. T. Vulgaris, also known as English thyme or garden thyme, is native to the Western Mediterranean but now grows in gardens. Extracts of the flowers of wild thyme are used as an expectorant. Garden thyme is used mainly as a culinary herb, but infusions made from its leaves have traditionally been used to help support upset stomach and have been applied locally to help support wounds.

History

Legend has it that thyme grew from the tears shed by Helen of Troy. Thyme was a component of the embalming compounds used by the ancient Egyptians. It was probably introduced into Europe by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, the plant was associated with death and was planted around graves.

Traditional Support Uses

Wild thyme can be used as an antiseptic, antispasmodic, expectorant, astringent, and digestive aid. Garden thyme was also used as a deodorant.

Commission E Recommendations

The Commission recommends wild thyme for inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. Garden thyme can also be used for helping support the symptoms of cough, colds, and upper respiratory tract health concerns.

Possible Effects

Wild thyme contains most of the same ingredients as garden thyme, but in lower concentrations. The essential oil extracted from the flowers of T. vulgaris contains thymol, a powerful antiseptic, widely used by dentists. Thyme essential oil (3%) can be been used as a preservative in the cosmetic industry for many years. There is good evidence that thyme oil, in common with the essential oils of anise seed, cinnamon leaf, red thyme, and tea tree, can be used as an approach to kill body lice (pediculus humanus). The oils are dissolved in alcohol, applied in the evening and rinsed off in the morning.

In the laboratory, aqueous extracts of thyme fight the growth of H. pylori, known to play a role in the occurrence of peptic irritation issues. Very few clinical studies have ever been undertaken, and thyme's usefulness in respiratory infections has never been validated. Thyme oil is used widely by aromatherapists, who have published at least one controlled trial, the results of which suggest that thyme oil can be used to help grow hair:

A randomized, double-blind, controlled trial of seven months duration involved 43 balding men who massaged essential oils (thyme, rosemary, lavender, and cedarwood) into their scalps daily, and 43 others who rubbed in a placebo-containing oil. The participants were photographed on a regular basis, and the pictures were reviewed by two dermatologists for evidence of hair growth. (The dermatologists did not know which men were using placebo and which were using the essential oils). No side effects occurred and, by the end of the study, half of the men supported with the oil had grown significantly more hair than the controls.

Dosage

For cough, Commission E recommends a tea made from 1 to 2 grams of the dried thyme leaves, several times a day as needed. Alternatively, 1-2 grams of fluid extract of garden thyme can be taken up to three times a day. For supporting sores and irritations, the Commission recommends compresses made from a 5 percent infusion of thyme. The recommended dose of wild thyme is 6 grams per day of the dried flowers.

Thyme, Common
Thymus vulgaris
(Garden Thyme; Wild Thyme or Mother of Thyme; Thymus praecox or Thymus serpyllum)

Medicinal Usage

Possessing antiseptic and disinfectant qualities, thyme can be used to help support indigestion, flatulence, stomach upsets, bronchial troubles, coughs, colds, laryngitis, colic, joint pain and menstrual disorders. Thyme tea was prescribed for hangovers, and mouth, gum and throat infections. Sleeping on a pillow stuffed with thyme was used for giddiness and nightmares. Pliny said that thyme supported melancholy, "troubles of hypochondria" and "aberrations of the mind", adding that it was "also administered to epileptics, who when attacked by a fit are revived by its smell." Thyme should not be taken during pregnancy.

Culinary Usage

A pot-herb, thyme stimulated the appetite and helped the digestion of fatty meats, such as mutton and pork. It was used in salads, stews, soups, stuffings, vegetables, pickles, sauces, cheeses, omelettes, and various other dishes. The herb was also used to flavour liqueurs. Thyme honey was especially valued.

Miscellaneous

A native of the Mediterranean region, thyme was employed by the ancient Etruscans and Egyptians for embalming their dead. As a herb traditionally associated with death, the flowers were said to provide a resting-place for the souls of those who had died. It was also said that the scent of thyme could be detected in places where murders had been committed. The plant's botanical name Thymus is derived from either the Greek for courage or to fumigate, the latter referring to its use as incense in temples. The herb was introduced into Britain by the Romans, and listed by Aelfric. As an emblem of courage, thyme was added to soups and beverages to help support shyness. During the Middle Ages ladies presented their 'bold and brave' knights with 'favours' embroidered with a sprig of thyme. In addition to being carried by judges to ward off gaol fever, bunches of thyme were strewn on floors, and burned to fumigate houses and repel insects. It was also put in wardrobes to keep moths away from linen. Being a favourite flower of the fairies, thyme was reputed to possess the power to make them visible to humans. The herb was used in soaps, cosmetics, perfumes and pot-pourri.

Thyme is also known as Garden Thyme. This fragrant plant is indigenous to the Mediterranean region of Europe, and is extensively cultivated in the United States. The genus name Thymus may be derived from the Greek word "thymon," meaning "courage," as it was once used as a bath herb by Roman soldiers to help them be more courageous. It also helped people to speak up more courageously. Or perhaps it was from the Greek "thymon," meaning "to fumigate," as it has been tried for centuries as an popular incense. The species name serpyllum for Wild Thyme may be due to the plant's creeping snake-like appearance, in reference to the ancient support for snakebites with Thyme. The plant was also burned in ancient Roman times to deter scorpions. It is still used for embalming.

During the Middle Ages, it can be used as a stewing herb. Oil of Thyme was used during World War I to help support infection and to help support pain. On Midsummer Night's Eve, fairies are said to dance on beds of Thyme. The part of this plant used for health benefits is the above ground portion. The primary chemical constituents of Thyme include essential oil (borneol, carvacrol, cymol, linalool, thymol), bitter principle, tannin, flavonoids (apigenin, luteolin), saponins, and triterpenic acids. Small amounts of this herb are sedative, whereas larger amounts are stimulant. Thyme is used as a disinfectant. Thyme also warms and stimulates the lungs, expels mucus, and supports congestion. It also helps deter infections. Both constituents thymol and carvacrol have a relaxing effect upon the digestive tract's smooth muscles.

This herb has had many culinary uses over the years, including its use in soups, stews, vegetables, chicken, jams, fruit salads, bouquet garnishes, gumbos, and Benedictine liqueur. Thyme aids in the digestion of high fat foods, and has been used to preserve meat. Thyme honey, made when bees collect pollen from Thyme flowers, is excellent.

Known topical applications include its use as a gargle & mouthwash for dental decay, laryngitis, mouth sores, plaque formation, sore throat, thrush, tonsillitis, and bad breath. Thyme can be been used as a compress for lung congestion such as asthma, coughs, coughs and colds, and as a poultice for wounds, mastitis, insect bites and stings. It can also be used as an eyewash for sore eyes, and as a hair rinse for dandruff. The essential oil is added to soaps and anti-melancholy inhalations. The common name Thyme includes the species Thymus serpyllum, which is used interchangeably with Thymus vulgaris.

Wild thyme can be been used as a cough suppressant for centuries. Even though clinical trials proving its effectiveness have never been published, the experience of European herbalists suggests that wild thyme is certainly safe and probably effective. The results of laboratory tests suggest that application of oil would be a safe way to help support lice infestations. Whether the oil can also be tried to grow hair remains to be seen! Large amounts of oil can be toxic.

WILD THYME (Thymus serpyllum) is a creeping shrub of the mint family, native to Europe. Its pungent, lemon-scented, dried tops and leaves have been used since ancient times as a culinary seasoning for soups and meat sauces. In medieval days, thyme mixed with honey was considered a potent supportive for pulmonary problems.

This species of thyme contains an essential oil which gives it a pleasant penetrating odor; it possesses stimulant and diuretic properties. An antiseptic is extracted from it. Culpeper tells us: "It is under Venus and is excellent for nervous disorders."

Medicinal Usage

Thyme has a wide range of health applications. It has tonic, expectorant, stomachic, carminative, antispasmodic, sedative, and diaphoretic properties. The tea can be gargled for a sore throat or laryngitis. Headaches, stomach health, diarrhea, coughs, and intestinal atony have been improved with the tea. It can also be used as an expellant.

The essential oil contains thymol, linalool, carvone, cineole, limonene, and other substances. The leaves contain tannins. Thymol, a powerful antiseptic, is the chief constituent of the oil. The oil has antioxidant, antispasmodic, disinfectant, expectorant, and carminative properties. Thymol itself can be highly toxic.

The leaves contain vitamin A, niacin, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc.

General Herb Information

Like the genus Mentha, Thymus is a taxonomical Pandora's box. There are about 400 species - or 100 species with 400 names. They are creeping, woody-based, evergreen perennials concentrated in the Mediterranean region and western Asia. Leaves are small, entire, and opposite. Flower heads are usually terminal, compact whorled bunches of tiny flowers. We will deal only with a handful of species.

T. vulgaris, common or English thyme, grows from about six to eighteen inches tall and has linear or elliptical leaves up to five-eighths inches long. The dense whorls of lilac or white flowers are terminal or interrupted on upper branches. There are several important cultivars including the silver-leafed 'Argentis', 'Narrowleaf French' - French thyme, 'Broadleaf English' - English thyme, and the golden-foliaged 'Aureus'?

T. x citriodorus, lemon thyme, is a branching perennial with a distinct lemon fragrance. It grows up to one foot high. Flowers are light lilac, and the leaves are oval in shape. The cultivar 'Aureus' has golden yellow leaves; 'Silver Queen' is a silver-leafed cultivar.

T. pseudolanuginosus, creeping woolly thyme, is a low-growing (one-half inch tall) perennial, with one-eighth-inch long, woolly, gray leaves that are elliptical. It produces a few tiny, pale pink flowers in the leaf axils. This plant makes a fabulous ground cover.

T. serpyllum, creeping thyme, is perhaps the most ambiguous name of the thymus classification. According to Hortus Thini, it is rarely cultivated in the United States, and most material offered as T. serpyllum is probably one of five other species. It is a small-leaved, low-growing perennial, with thin creeping stems which form dense mats. The tiny flowers range from white through pink, purple, and red shades.

Thymes are propagated from seeds, cuttings, layering, and root division, although cultivars must be propagated asexually. Give plants six- to twelve-inch spacings. Six pounds of seed will sow an acre of thyme. Root division is the easiest and fastest means of increasing thyme stock. The roots of the low-growing species reach as deep as two feet. Remove them carefully, retaining as much of the original soil material as possible. Give transplants a generous supply of water.

The soil should be light, warm, rather dry, well-drained, and with a pH of 6 to 8 for good thyme culture. Plants may be killed by frost heaving the crowns or burning the foliage in areas where winter temperatures dip below 100°F. Provide plants with a heavy mulch. Clumps tend to become woody and die out in the center. They should be divided every three or four years. One-half to one ton of dried herb can be expected per acre. Harvest just before it blooms.

Thyme is a well-known culinary herb. Use in fish chowder, poultry stuffings, egg dishes, meats, cheese and with vegetables such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, asparagus, and onions.

Thyme leaf is mostly taken against digestive issues and for the potential to help support symptoms of coughs, colds, coughs and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. It is locally applied against mucosal inflammation of mouth and throat, and for helping support minor wounds. The oil is added to baths in case of bronchial catarrh and itching skin.

Thyme
Thymus vulgaris L.

Family: Lamiaceae.

Other Names: Garden thyme; thym (French); Echter Thymian (German); timo (Italian); tomillo (Spanish).

Description: A small perennial herb or shrublet with thin stems bearing small, greyish green leaves in opposite pairs and minute violet flowers. Spanish thyme (T. zygis) is an accepted alternative source of the herb. Often used but less effective are wild thyme (T. serpyllum), larger wild thyme (T. pulegioides), African wild thyme (T. schimperi) and lemon thyme (T. x citriodora - a garden hybrid between T. vulgaris and T. pulegioides).

Origin: Southern and southeastern Europe (T. vulgaris), Spain and Portugal (T. zygis), western and northern Europe to the Ukraine (T. serpyllum) and most parts of Europe (T. pulegioides). Grown in herb gardens; cultivated commercially in many parts of the world.

Parts Used: Dried leaves and flowers (Thymi herba); volatile oil (Thymi aetheroleum).

Therapeutic Category: Expectorant, spasmolytic.

Preparation and Dosage: A tea made from 1 - 4 g of the herb can be taken several times a day (expectorant use) or before or during meals (stomachic use). The herb, extracts of the herb, the essential oil or isolated thymol are used in commercial preparations, including cough teas, cough drops, gargles and antiseptic ointments.

Active Ingredients: The essential oil is very variable but good quality oil is rich in thymol (30-50%) and carvacrol (1-5%), with smaller amounts of linalool, p-cymene, cineole, thujan-4-ol and alpha-pinene. The herb is rich in labiate tannins (up to 7%), several polymethoxyflavones, triterpenes and polysacchanides.

Health Effects: Thyme oil and thymol are strongly antibiotic (thymol is 25 times more effective than phenol). Antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and antitussive activities are ascribed to the polymethoxyflavones and monoterpenes.

Notes: Thyme and thyme oil are commonly used in cosmetics and to flavour food and adult drinks.

Status: Traditional health; Pharm.; Comm. E+; ESCOP 1; WHO 1.

Common garden thyme produces leaves and flowers that are both used. With carminative, antiseptic, expectorant, and antitussive actions, thyme is most often used, health-wise, for coughs, coughs and colds, indigestion, and other stomach problems. The bodily systems that benefit the most from the supplementation of thyme are the lungs, the liver, and the stomach. In terms of the biochemical makeup of thyme, it contains an essential oil with thymol, cavacrol, cymol, linaIool, borneol, bitter principle, tannin, flavonoids, and triterpenic acids.

Thyme can be used to help support acute and chronic respiratory affections, including coughs and colds. It is also useful for digestive problems such as gas, indigestion and diarrhea. Finally, a tea taken before retiring is effective against nightmares. For coughs, make a syrup of two parts thyme leaves and equal part elecampagne root, wild cherry bark and yerba santa. Take in teaspoon to tablespoon dose as needed.

Depurative Formula is an herbal depurative or blood cleanser. Sarsaparilla, one of the herbal components, contains saponins that may assist with the reduction of metabolic waste products. This gives the herb it's characteristic diuretic and depurative properties. Both Senna and Buckthorn Bark are traditionally included in herbal laxative preparations, but due to their support of eliminative functions, they may also be useful as blood cleansers. Horsetail presents depurative, diuretic, digestive and aperitive properties through the support of removal of excess water from the body and act as a disinfectant. St. John's Wort, is considered to be helpful as an astringent with both diuretic and depurative support. Soapwort and Licorice assist with mild cleansing or purifying effects, but in conjunction with the other herbs detailed above, they can enhance the therapeutic action of this special herbal combination.

  Great product

I love this product for my cat's chronic sinusitis. He can become quite unconfortable with his nostrils blocked. This product, alcohol free, is great for pets; This tincture is part of his successfull regimen, and with the fenugreek also being a digestive help, my furry boy does not regurgitate the drops he's given. Keeps him antibiotic free.

Multiplied milk supply with fenugreek and thyme

I noticed a significant increase in my milk supply after taking 3 capsules, twice a day with food, of this fenugreek /thyme blend. It has been a great relief to me to be able to use herbs to enhance my milk supply.

  Marvelous for nursing mothers!

Using Fenugreek and Thyme has taken away a good deal of the strain related to nursing my baby and getting back to my regular activities. By using this product, I'm able to produce adequate milk over the course of each day. I just mix a teaspoon of it right into my morning coffee. Perhaps it's not the most exciting taste in the world, but when I look over at my child sitting there beside me, I suddenly don't taste anything but... well... love.

Echinacea is found in scattered patches in rich prairie soil or sandy soil from Alabama to Texas and northwestward, being most abundant in Kansas and Nebraska.

This herb grows to a height of from 2 to 3 feet, sending up a rather stout, bristly haired stem bearing thick hairy leaves from 3 to 8 inches long. The flowers, which appear from July to October, vary in color from whitish rose to pale purple. The flower heads are ornamental and consist of ray and disk flowers. The brown fruit ing heads, which develop after the flowers, are conical, stiff, and chaffy. The plant has a thick, blackish root.

Most of the actions of Echinacea can all be related to proper immune system functioning. In times of stress, in harsh environments or seasons, whenever the body is in need of reinforcement, Echinacea may supply the boost required to maintain the lines of resistance, to mend injured tissue, and to help stimulate healthy body functioning. The common cold, digestion, mild to moderate infections of all kinds are still fair game for the use of Echinacea, but the main use of the plant is to boost the immune system.

Echinacea is a traditional herbal health used to help support sore throats due to colds. The health properties of this popular herb was originally discovered by the Native Indian many years ago. The two most potent species of this plant include Echinacea angustifolia and Echinacea purpurea. In all studies, Echinacea has no known toxicities, however, individuals with auto-immune issues (ie. immunity deficiency, etc.) are cautioned not to use Echinacea unless directed by a physician due to its potential immune-stimulating properties. Also, those with allergies to plants in the sunflower family should avoid taking Echinacea.

Goldenseal is also known by the names Yellow Root, Orange Root, Eye Root, Indian Turmeric, and Jaundice Root. Goldenseal is a native North herb that grows in the Appalachian Mountains and surrounding areas. The Cherokee Indians, who introduced it to early settlers, not only valued the root of this plant for health purposes, but also for its yellow dye which can be used as face paint, clothing dye, insect repellant and as an application to wounds. Once widely available in the wild, the plant has been largely over-harvested, and is now mostly available through commercial cultivation. The genus name, Hydrastis, is from the Greek meaning "water acting," due to the effect Goldenseal has upon mucus membrane secretions. Goldenseal contains calcium, iron, manganese, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, B-complex, and other nutrients and minerals.

Considered to be a "broad-spectrum" herb, Goldenseal is extremely popular and very much in demand. Goldenseal's numerous uses are attributed to its anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. It soothes irritated mucus membranes aiding the eyes, ears, nose and throat. Taken at the first signs of respiratory problems, coughs or colds, Goldenseal can help avoid further symptoms from developing. It can also be tried to help support fevers, and support congestion and excess mucous. Goldenseal cleanses and promotes healthy glandular functions by increasing bile flow and digestive enzymes, therefore, regulating healthy liver and spleen functions. It also eases inflamed peptic ailments, aids digestion and regulates constipation.

Goldenseal may be used to help support infections of the bladder and intestines as well. Its properties are largely due to its alkaloids, which include berberine, hydrastine and canadine. Because demand for the herb is high and supplies are low, Goldenseal is one of the most expensive herbs on the market.
