• A tea with mellow flowery notes
The Uva district of Sri Lanka peaks in quality during the Southwest monsoons in August and September. This occurs as follows: The warm moist winds coming across the Indian Ocean from the Southwest "hit" Sri Lanka and begin to rise over the mountains in the central part of the country. As the warm moist air rises into the cool mountain air condensation occurs and there is heavy rainfall on the western side of the island. The Eastern side gets very little rain but lots of sunshine. Uva is on the east side of the island and consequently being in the rain shadow the quality improves dramatically - cool, dry and bright sunshine.

Liddesdale is a high grown estate. In Sri Lanka they class a high grown as an estate where the mean altitude is between 4200 - 7500 feet above sea level. High grounds provide superior flavor and the best quality because: cooler temperatures, generally better soil , more sunshine, generally slightly less rainfall - These cause the bush to grow more slowly and the goodness and flavor is concentrated in the new shoots.

Information about Sri Lanka's Tea Industry:
  • Tea was first planted in Sri Lanka by James Taylor in 1867 at an estate called Loolecondra
  • 60% of the green leaf supplied to the tea factories comes from small holders (individually held farms)
  • Average yield per hectare is 1200 kilos

• A seasonal tea with a pungent, astringent flavor
• Almost dry to the taste
The Uva district of Sri Lanka peaks in quality during the Southwest monsoons during July to September. As the monsoon winds blow across the Indian Ocean they pick-up moisture during the 3000 mile journey to Sri Lanka. As the warm moist air rises into the cool mountain air condensation occurs and there is heavy rainfall on the western side of the island. The Eastern side gets very little rain but lots of sunshine. Uva is on the east side of the island and consequently being in the rain shadow the quality improves dramatically.

Aislaby is in the Malwatte Valley also known as the heart of the Uva tea district. The pungency that this tea exhibits is particular to this district. Aislaby is classed as a high grown estate in that its bushes grow in a band between 4000 - 4500 feet above sea level. Aislaby is a medium sized estate for this region, covering 326 hectares (about 825 acres - there are 640 square acres in a square mile). The yield of the estate is about 1600 kilos per annum per hectare or about 1.1 million pounds per year, (this is enough tea to fill 175,000,000 tea bags!). Because Aislaby produces such high quality tea only about 50% can be used to help support tea bags - the rest is bought by discerning tea people around the world. Aislaby was established as a tea factory and tea estate in the 1880's a few short years after the tea industry began in Sri Lanka. The current estate manager Mr. Y. Wadugodapitiya is justifiably proud of his wonderful tea.

Teas that come from high grown estates provide superior flavor and the best quality because: cooler temperatures, generally better soil , more sunshine, generally slightly less rainfall - These cause the bush to grow more slowly and the goodness and flavor is concentrated in the new shoots.

• Light liquoring with hints of delicate floral notes
Koslande is one of the estates that we use in this Ceylon organic tea. In Sri Lanka terms it is a medium sized tea estate covering 160 hectares (406 acres). It is situated in the Haputale Mountain Range in the region of Uva. Uva and Nuwara Eliya are Sri Lanka's highest elevation tea growing regions and are world renown for some of the finest teas in the world, especially when they are at their seasonal best (in Koslande's case this is August).

The total annual crop (all leaf grades) is only 100 Tonnes of tea (this is enough to make about 4,000,000 cups of tea). Following are some statistics about the estate:
  • Number of Workers: 574
  • Number of Tea Bushes: 1,568,506
  • Estate Mgr: Niran Illankone
  • Average Age of Bushes: 75% are older than 75 years
  • Mr Illankone is married with 2 children and his eldest son attends school in a town called Bandarawela
  • The estate is covered by 3 different organic certifying bodies, IMO of Switzerland, Organic Farmers and Growers of the UK and Nat. Assoc. of Sustainable Agriculture of Australia
In addition to being organic certified, Koslande is also a member of the Fair Trade Organization and has been a member since 1996. As of 2004, the Fair Trade organization has re-invested USD $15,500.00 into projects that directly benefit the workers. Some of the initiatives are providing 20 propane stoves and 20 sewing machines to workers. The propane stoves had an immediate benefit to the 20 families which received these cookers in that they did not have to go out and search for firewood. The sewing machines were part of a program to encourage the workers to earn additional income. During August of 2004 another 60 sewing machines are to be distributed to another 60 workers. Other projects that are being planned such as new latrines for 85 families, new roofs for 42 workers homes and upgrading two day care centers.
