Tagetes
(T. patula and T. minuta)

Plant Family

Asteraceae (Compositae).

Synonyms

Tagette, taget, marigold. Many books wrongly cite this oil as 'calendula', confusing it with the pot marigold or Calendula officinalis, which produces too little essential oil to make distillation commercially viable. However, the infused oil of calendula is often used in aromatherapy as a rejuvenating base oil.

Description and Distribution

A half-hardy annual of compact and bushy habit. It has dark green deeply cut and divided leaves and an abundance of brownish-orange, daisy-like flowers. The plant is native to Mexico, but extensively cultivated worldwide. Most of the oil is produced in South Africa, South America, Nigeria and France.

Extraction Method

Steam distillation of the fresh flowers and leaves.

Nature of the Oil

A yellowy-orange, slightly viscous liquid. The offbeat aroma is composed of fruity-sweet top notes with a bitter green, murky undertone. It is difficult to offer an objective assessment of the oil's odour effect, except to say that many people find it somewhat disturbing: rather like the resonance of a discordant musical chord.

Main Constituents

Tagetones, ocimene, myrcene, linalol, limonene, pinenes, carvone, citral camphene, valeric acid.

Properties

Antispasmodic, bactericidal, emmenagoguic, sudorific, vermifugal.

Aromatherapeutic Support

Athlete's foot, absence of menstruation outside pregnancy.

Blends Well With

The oil is extremely difficult to work with, for the penetrating aroma has the curious property of becoming stronger when combined with other essences. Nevertheless, it is just about acceptable when blended with bergamot, orange, lemon or lavender. Tagetes should be used in concentrations of less than 0.5 per cent.

Tagetes is an annual herb up to 60 cm high with soft, oval, pale leaves and bright orange daisy-like flowers. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation from the fresh flowering herb and also an absolute (and concrete) by solvent extraction from the flowering herb. Tagetes is native to South America and Mexico, but now grows wild in Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. The oil is produced mainly in South Africa, France, Argentina and Egypt.

Properties - disinfectant, antispasmodic, bactericidal, carminative, diaphoretic, emmenagogue, stomachic.

Uses - It can be used to help support skin complaints, menstrual irregularities, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, conjunctivitis, and poor eyesight. The absolute and oil are employed to a limited extent in herbaceous and floral perfumes. It can also be used for flavoring tobacco and in most major food categories, including soft drinks. In China the flowers are used for whooping cough, colds, colic, mumps, sore eyes and mastitis, and in India the flowering tops are distilled to produce "attar genda" a perfume material.

Blends with - clary sage, lavender, jasmine, bergamot and other citrus oils in very small percentages.

Origin - Africa, Asia, North & South America.

Appearance - A yellow reddish liquid with an unpleasant, rancid odor having a fruity, bitter undertone.

Production - The steam distillation of the fresh flowering herb produces Tagetes oil.
