Bitter squaw vine, or partridge berry as it is sometimes called, has beneficial effects on the uterus and the liver. It's partrurient and astringent properties make it a useful herbal supportive for menstrual irregularities, or womb preparation prior to childbirth. The biochemistry of the herb remains a partial mystery, although there have been some alkaloids, glycosides, tannins and mucilage identified.
Squaw vine can be used to help support amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea. Also used to prepare the womb for childbirth. Combine squaw vine with two parts raspberry leaves, one part each black and blue cohosh, false unicorn and two parts echinacea root for menstrual irregularities and vaginal discharge.
Squaw Vine is reputed to promote an easy labour by aiding contraction of the womb during childbirth. It can also be tried to help support dysmenorrhoea and other painful complaints of the female reproductive tract. It also has a calming effect on the nervous system and, in addition, can help improve the digestion. The primary chemical constituents of Squaw Vine include alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, mucilage, and tannins. As an astringent, it has been used in supporting digestive tract health, especially if there is much mucus. On the mucous membranes, it exerts a mild tonic influence, which slowly abates excessive mucous discharges, and has led most herbalists to pronounce it an astringent; but this action is wholly tonic, and may be used for catarrhal and leucorrheal discharges, and for chronic dysentery. It may be used in nervous exhaustion, irritability or debility in either sex, especially when symptoms involve the reproductive system. Squaw Vine can be useful for all forms of nervous feebleness and irritability of a chronic character.
Past topical applications of Squaw Vine has included its use as an eyewash, as an astringent skin wash, and as a salve for sore nipples in lactating women.
A small creeping perennial evergreen native to North America, this plant was called 'Squaw Vine' as Native women and pioneers used the herb to facilitate childbirth. The herb is still used by women for a wide range of gynecological complaints. Natives ate the berries and made them into a jelly, which was eaten in case of fevers. The part of this plant that is used for health benefits is the above ground portion of the vine.
Squaw Vine is also known by the names Partridge Berry, Mitchella, Winter Clove, Twin-berry, One-berry, Hive Vine, Squawberry, Checkerberry, and Deerberry.
