Taking Glucosamine Without Chondroitin? You Fool You!
Dr. Jason Theodosakis, M.D.
Too many people believe that they can use one supplement or the other, but don't need both.
The press has made much to do about the landmark glucosamine study published in 2000 (Lancet glucosamine study), Though this is an important study, it has caused much confusion and misinformation about supplements for joint health, especially related to the use of chondroitin.
One of the main premises in my nine-step treatment program,
The Arthritis Cure
is that the combination of Glucosamine + Chondroitin is not only additive, but has a synergistic effect (1 + 1 = 3, not just 2). This premise was proven in the NIH's GAIT (Glucosamine /Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial). It was also proven in cartilage biopsy experiments, perhaps the most powerful way to judge (becuase these types of studies are not performed on people, for ethical reasons).
The combination of glucosamine and chondroitin (at least 800 mg), has been proven to be significantly more effective than either glucosamine or chondroitin alone.
In the first head-to-head study published, only the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin was able to prevent the most severe damage to cartilage in experimental animals, as determined by the most accurate test possible, examination of the cartilage under a microscope. Reference: Journal of Clinical Orthopedic Related Research. Dec. 2000 No. 381, pp. 229-240.
Furthermore, glucosamine plus chondroitin acted synergistically (not just additive) in stimulating cartilage cells to produce proteoglycans (cartilage components). In the same study, chondroitin, but not glucosamine alone was able to inhibit the enzymes that breakdown cartilage.
When reviewing all of the research on both glucosamine and chondroitin, the evidence on symptom improvement for chondroitin is slightly above that for glucosamine. Only one, large In GAIT,
clearly the combination of the two (glucosamine + chondroitin) is best.
Conclusion:
Glucosamine and chondroitin, in combination proved superior to either alone and people should not consider using either alone. Here's how they rank from
most effective
to
least effective
:
Chondroitin + Glucosamine combination
Chondroitin alone 800-1,200 mg
Glucosamine HCl alone 1,500 mg
Glucosamine Sulfate alone 1,500 mg
You may be surprised to see that Glucosamine HCl 1,500 mg is slightly above Glucosamine Sulfate 1,500 mg. The reason for this is simple. To get the same amount of actual glucosamine, one needs 1,900 mg of glucosamine sulfate or 1,500 mg of glucosamine HCl. This is simply because the sulfate molecule is heavier and larger than the HCl molecules attached to the glucosamine.
