High Pressure Treat: Licorice Can Raise Blood Pressure
"Lay off the licorice" is good advice for any patient with hypertension, Dr. Helga A. Sigurjonsdottir declared at the annual meeting in Toronto of the Endocrine Society.
In 54 healthy volunteers, consumption of modest amounts of the candy caused significant increases in blood pressure, reported Dr. Sigurjonsdottir of Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Goteborg, Sweden.
After eating 50, 100, or 200 g/day of licorice for 2-4 weeks, the subjects had rises of 3.1-14.4 mm Hg in systolic blood pressure in a linear dose-dependent fashion.
A 50-g serving of licorice contains about 75 mg of glycyrrhetinic acid; it inhibits 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, which converts cortisol to cortisone. This results in pseudohyperaldosteronism, with sodium and fluid retention, metabolic alkalosis, inhibition of the reninangiotensin system--and hypertension.
