Coenzyme Q10 and Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a degenerative nerve disorder with no cure, and no treatment has been effective in slowing progression of PD. Coenzyme Q10 is a chemical made in the body that transports electrons in the mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cell. A new study suggests that very high doses might slow the progression of early PD.

Eighty subjects with early PD, but not requiring any medications, were divided into four groups and given one of three levels of coenzyme Q10 or a placebo. After 16 months, progression of symptoms increased less in the highest dose group. The study appeared in the October 2002 issue of Archives of Neurology.

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: There appeared to be no adverse effects from taking any dose of coenzyme Q10. The authors of this study concluded that their results need to be confirmed in a larger study and that the proper dose still needs to be worked out if coenzyme Q10 is going to be recommended for PD or other neurological disorders.
