| | | | Wheat Grass (Wheatgrass) | | | Wheat grass, one of the cereal grasses like barley grass and alfalfa, is
widely known as a nutrient-rich super food, high in vitamins, minerals,
and chlorophyll. Nutritionally speaking, some sources report that two
ounces of wheat grass equal roughly two pounds of raw broccoli. That's a
lot of raw broccoli to consume at one sitting! Other sources, particularly
Dr. Andrew Weil, refute this incredible claim although they acknowledge
that wheat grass is one of the most complete sources of vitamins and
minerals available. Health conditions that may benefit from wheat grass
supplementation are numerous and many are scientifically unsubstantiated.
However, wheat grass has been commonly used for its blood-building and
detoxifying properties. | |

grass blended with other greens boosted the health of his chickens,
wheat grass began to gain recognition as a health supplement for
humans. However, when the pharmaceutical industry began to create
synthetic multi-vitamins, nobody questioned that science and
technology might be inferior to nature.
Simply put, wheat grass is
the grass of a young wheat plant. The grass is removed before the plant
matures into the wheat stalks we have come to recognize and rely upon for
their harvested grains. The juiced and frozen wheat grass products
maintain a balance of minerals, vitamins, enzymes and phytochemicals found
in the young, fast growing plants.
Generally, we associate grasses
with animals like grazing cattle who have several stomachs designed to
accomodate digestion of the somewhat fibrous stalks. Dogs know to
instinctively eat grass as a means of combating intestinal worms and
parasites. The balance of nutritional components found in wheat grass can
benefit humans, too, consuming fresh or frozen extracted juices (preferred
over dried extracts dissolved in water) from the young plant. Whether it
is the miracle cure-all that many claim it to be may be overstating the
facts; but a glass of wheat grass instead of a coffee is undoubtedly a
much healthier way to start your day.
One ounce of juice requires a
lot of wheat grass to grow - more than most people could manage themselves
with the small commercial tray sprouters available on the market which are
better suited for alfalfa sprouts. This accounts for the high prices of
many wheat grass juices and frozen cubes on the market.

nutritional spectrum, it has been used for a variety of health concerns.
Wheat grass has been used for blood building and hemoglobin production,
neutralizing toxins and carcinogens in the body, lowering blood pressure,
and balancing blood sugar levels, among numerous other health
concerns.

Wheat Grass Juice contains vitamins B, C, E, and
carotene (Vitamin A).- Vitamin A is needed to prevent weak or
brittle bones, night blindness, and dry skin.
- Vitamin E is needed
for good eyesight, normal growth and reproduction.
- Vitamin B is
the anti-stress vitamin. The more stress we are under the more of this
vitamin is needed. Vitamin B helps the digestive system, the adrenal
glands and is essential for normal brain and body
formation.
- Vitamin C is important for the health of the skin,
teeth, gums, eyes, muscles and joints.
- Vitamin E is an anti-
oxidant, prevents muscle degeneration, sterility, slow healing of wounds
and infections and helps the heart. The vitamin E in Wheatgrass Juice is
10 times more easily assimilated by the body that synthetic Vitamin
E.
Minerals
Mineral salts are basic to all organic
life. The electrical currents of life transfer through organic minerals
(minerals from plants). Organic minerals regulate the elimination and
blood-building functions of the body. If you take inorgnic minerals (those
available in pill form), you need 10-20 times more, risking an overload,
upsetting your internal balance.
These minerals are not found in
any one single source. That is why we go to great extremes and cost to add
minerals to our Genesis Wheatgrass Soil. We have selected minerals from
volcanoes from New Mexico, ancient sea beds from southeast Texas and
Florida, kelp from the North Seas and earthworm casting. We would never
grow Wheat Grass in only compost or peatmoss. We don't believe in the
silver bullet concept that one additive will meet all the soil's needs.
"if it's not in the soil, it's not in the grass".
When
someone tells me, they grow Wheatgrass in organic compost, my first
thought is whose compost mine or yours, or John's or Sam's. All of these
composts would have a different mineral content. Some minerals could have
been leached out during the composting process. Some add peat moss which
has virtually no nutrients. The U. S. Senate Document# 264 in 1936 showed
that 12 growing seasons would deplete most nutrients form the soil. The
top soil from your yard is not adequate.
Wheatgrass grown in highly
mineralized soil is a good source of calcium, trace minerals, iron,
magnesium, potassium and sodium, selenium, and zinc.- Calcium cannot
be used properly, if other trace minerals are not present. Plants such as
Wheatgrass Juice and other live foods, have the trace minerals present to
make the calcium absorbed by the body. Even though spinach, beet greens,
and chard have more calcium that Wheatgrass, the presence of oxalic acid
binds the calcium making it unusable by the body.
- Iron is need for
the red blood formation. Inorganic iron can cause constipation. The iron
in wheat grass juice has no side effects.
- Magnesium, potassium and
calcium maintain the PH of the blood. Wheatgrass Juice has an abundance of
these important minerals. Alkaline minerals must neutralize the acids from
metabolism in order to maintain healthy bones and teeth and build our
immunity against colds and other illnesses.
- Sodium aids digestion,
elimination and regulate the fluids in our cells. Normal blood contains
five grams of sodium per pint. Americans eat too much sodium in shape of
table salt. Wheatgrass Juice has a safe amount of sodium for even people
on a low salt diet.
- Highly mineralized Wheatgrass juice contains
all known mineral elements including selenium and zinc.
Amino
Acids
A deficiency of just one amino acid can result in
allergies, low energy, sluggish digestion, poor resistance to infection,
and premature aging. Wheatgrass Juice contains 17 amino acids, lysine,
isoleucine, tryptophane, phenylalanine, threonine valine, methionine,
alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, histidine,
proline, serine, and tyrosine.
MSM
MSM is a sulfur
bearing molecule found in all living organisms destroyed in processed
food. It helps our body use vitamins, helps to reduce allergies, helps
detoxify the body and increase oxygen, and takes out
inflammation.
Enzymes
Our habit of processing
everything we eat not only destroys some of the vitamins but totally
destroys 100% of the enzymes. Enzymes are also destroyed by drying.
Enzymes found in Wheatgrass Juice help detoxify the pollutants inside us
and help with digestion. The most important enzymes isolated from
Wheatgrass juice are:- Cytochrome oxidase, an antioxidant required
for proper cell respiration
- Lipase, a fat splitting
enzyme
- Protease, a protein digestant
- Amylase, which
facilitates starch digestion
- Catalase, which catalyzes the
decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen in the blood and
tissues.
- Transhydrogenase, an enzyme which aids in keeping the
muscle tissue of the heart toned
- Superoxide dismutase (SOD),
clinical trials show that SOD can help protect us from cell damage due to
super oxides, infections, aging, radiation, and poisoning from bad air,
bad food, and drugs. Wheatgrass is a superior source of
SOD.
Chlorophyll and Oxygen
Wheatgrass Juice is 70%
chlorophyll (the green part of the plant). Dr. G.H. Earp Thomas,
scientific researcher, considers Wheatgrass chlorophyll "the richest
nutritional liquid known to man." Chapter 3 of the Wheatgrass Book by
Ann Wigmore, includes evidence of the blood cleansing and building
abilities of chlorophyll, its effect on the circularoty system and oxygen
supply, and its role detoxifying and regeneration of the
liver.

like liquid lawn clippings. You'll have no trouble believing that it is
good for you and packed with vitamins and minerals. After a while,
however, you'll become accustomed to the very "natural" flavor,
and you'll be less inclined to 'throw it back' and drink it in one
gulp.
For a much more enjoyable and refreshing drink that you can
actually sip and, I daresay, enjoy, try the following:
