| | | Although they are of a benign nature these conditions are aesthetically
unpleasant. They should not be neglected because varicose veins could lead
to much more serious complications.
Varicosities can be due to
heredity, circulation problems, and pregnancies. Veins become more and
more apparent, growing from a minute varicosity to a large varix. Patients
often have heavy swollen legs, especially on very hot days and at night.
Although benign, varicosities can create certain complications.
Besides their aesthetic unpleasantness, affected veins can cause bleeding,
cramps, lesions or itchiness. Varicosities can also be an aggravating
factor in arthrosis, particularly of the knees. Finally, if there is pain
and swelling all along a vein's length, phlebitis or periphlebitis might
be diagnosed. In this case, it would be important to consult a doctor
because complications can go as far as varicous ulcers, which are much
more difficult to cure.
