of arthritis. It affects about 20.7 million Americans, and is
characterized by the breakdown of the joint's cartilage. Cartilage is what
cushions the ends of bones. When it breaks down, bones rub against each
other, causing pain and loss of movement. Osteoarthritis mostly affects
people over 45, and ranges from very mild to severe. It attacks hands and
weight-bearing joints such as knees, hips, feet and the back.
