Over 40 years of sports action has come our way since Jim McKay hosted the premier of ABC's Wide World of Sports on April 29, 1961, when a tag line was born that characterized the essence of sports - "The Thrill of Victory and The Agony of Defeat." America's family rooms have not been the same since.
Quickly becoming known for "bringing you the constant variety of sports," ABC captured a devoted audience as the decades passed. Wide World of Sports first broadcast Wimbledon on July 6, 1963. Viewers tuned in as well for the 1972 coverage from Reykjavik, Iceland, of the legendary World Chess Championship between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky, and sports fans were enthralled by champion figure skaters as the ice-crown made its way from Peggy Fleming to Michelle Kwan. Muhammad Ali was certainly one of the most influential athletes ever to appear on ABC Wide World of Sports, and years later we'd be watching Mike Tyson score a TKO against Razor Ruddock.
From the Tour de France to the Kentucky Derby, from martial arts to monster trucks, from Indianapolis to the Olympics - ABC Sports has continued "spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport."
