Kapla® inventor, Tom van der Bruggen, dreamed of building a castle in France from the age of ten. At twenty, he moved from Holland to France to pursue his dream. Hi bought the ruins of a farm and from it built a castle in stone.
In the process of designing his castle, he invented Kapla® as a basic building unit that could easily be built and rebuilt into different designs. "Kapla" is from the Dutch "KAbouter PLAnkjes" which means "small planks." Its design proportions are based on the elementary progression of odd numbers: one, three, five.
Unlike traditional cubes, Kapla® is long and thin. It is perfectly balanced between two ideas: building and sculpting. The single module can create an unlimited number of structures such as bridges, walls, domes, houses, roofs, bugs, and animals. Kapla® helps to develop the child's manipulative skills, sense of balance, concentration ability and creative spirit.
It gently pushes him or her towards the world of art. Although "child's play," Kapla® is not a childish game. It follows the pace of progress of whoever uses it. It can arouse passionate enthusiasm and stretch the intellectual capacity of adolescents, adults and architects alike.
