After several years of construction, the Nimitz was launched as the second nuclear aircraft carrier of the US Navy in 1972.
With a maximum displacement of 94400 ts, she is the world's biggest warship.
She not only has room for a crew of over 6000 men, but for about 100 aircraft as well, among which there are reconnaissance and cargo planes for the supply.
The defense power of the Nimitz consists mainly of radar controlled eightfold trench mortars type Sea Sparrow and of catapults. Besides, the ship is coated with a strong armour protection of special steel, turning it into a swimming fortress.
The hull is constructed in a very special way: it was divided into relatively small units (diceiisyy) which are completely insulated from one another. This should check the penetrating water in case of a leak.
In addition to those partitions, there are special fire walls.
The propulsion unit with two nuclear reactors takes up relatively little space, so that there is more room left for war equipment.
The costs for the Nimitz amount to approximately 600 Mill. Dollars. This means that she is not only the largest but also the most expensive military unit ever built.
Since 1975 the Nimitz has been part of the Nuclear Task Force-75 and stationed mainly in the Mediterranean.
