On the day of the festival, Esperanza travels separately from her grandmother, for Abuela is afraid that the birthmark on her cheek will frighten customers away. All by herself, Esperanza sets up her stall and sells her wares, grateful that the customers appreciate the detailed handmade work more than the cheaper machine-madeitems that are also available.
