| | | | | From The Publisher Steal Away: Selected and New Poems presents C.D. Wright's best lyrics, narratives, prose poems, and odes with new "retablos" and excerpts from her most recent collaboration, with photographer Deborah Luster, a bracing vigil on incarceration.
Long admired as a fearless poet writing authentically erotic verse, "Wright, with her Southern accent and cinematic eyecouples strangeness with uncanny accuracy to create poems that offer a once-and-for-all thing, opaque and revelatory, ceaselessly burning." About the Author
C.D. Wright has published nine collections of poetry, including two booklength poems, Deepstep Come Shining (Copper Canyon Press, 1998) and Just Whistle (Kelsey Street Press, 1994). In 1994 she was named State Poet of Rhode Island, a five-year post. On a fellowship for writers from the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Foundation, she curated "a walk-in book of Arkansas," an exhibition which toured throughout her native state. Wright has also published a collaborative work with photographer Deborah Luster entitled One Big Self: Prisoners of Louisiana (Twin Palms Press, 2002). The project won the Lange-Taylor Prize from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. She is a recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts, and awards from the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts and the Lannan Foundation. Wright is the Israel J. Kapstein Professor of English at Brown University. She edits Lost Roads Publishers with poet Forrest Gander, and they live with their son near Providence, Rhode Island.
