| | | | | In Brief This work is comprised of the "handwritten drafts of Nineteen Eighty-Four, representing about 44 percent of the completed novel. . . . Originally donated by Orwell's widow for sale at an auction in 1952 to benefit the Save the Children Fund and Youth Aliyah (a Zionist fund for refugee children), the manuscript was sold and resold until it came into the hands of Mr. Siegel, who agreed to its publication in this format." (Christ Science Monitor)
| | | | From The Publisher The world has suffered many disillusionments before, but few times has its hounded denizens been more uniformly beset than in the years following WW II. Here we had finished a war of liberation, fought on the most massive scale imaginable, and at its conclusion delivered over to Russian or Chinese Communist control hundreds of millions of unconsenting citizens.
Many saw the magnitude of this error, but it was Orwell who pointed out what we might become in combating the menace to our freedom. In his vision of 1984, we have grown as ruthless and manipulative as our enemies, callously uncaring of personal and individual freedoms, all in the name of the freedom and democracy we profess to defend.
| | | | Annotation The year is 1984; the scene is London, largest population center of Airstrip One ,part of the vast political entity Oceania, which is eternally at war with one of two other vast entities, Eurasia and Eastasia. At any moment, depending upon current alignments, all existing records show either that Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia and allied with Eastasia, or that it has always been at war with Eastasia and allied with Eurasia. Winston Smith knows this, because his work at the Ministry of Truth involves the constant "correction" of such records. "'Who controls the past,' ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.'" In a grim city and a terrifying country, where Big Brother Is Always Watching You and the Thought Police can literally read your mind, Winston is a man in grave danger for the simple reason that his memory still functions. He knows the Party's official image of the world is a fluid fiction. He knows the Party controls the people by feeding them lies and narrowing their imaginations through a process of bewilderment and brutalization that alienates each individual from his fellows and deprives him of every liberating human pursuit from reasoned inquiry to sexual passion. Drawn into a forbidden love affair, Winston finds the courage to join a secret revolutionary organization called The Brotherhood, dedicated to the destruction of the Party. Together with his beloved Julia, he hazards his life in a deadly match against the powers that be.

| | | | The Reader's Catalog Orwell's bleak 1984 vision of a totalitarian England under Big Brother.
| | | | | The Word On The Street 1984 has been an extraordinary experience for me. It is...overwhelming in its keenness and prophetic power. I hardly know which to praise more -- Orwell's insight into the fate of man and its totalitarianism or his compassion for him. Alfred Kazin
The most solid, the most brilliant thing George Orwell has done. V. S. Pritchett
1984 is a fantasy about disaffected journalists, novelists, poets, professors, and schoolmasters imposing an idealistic philosophy on the countries of the West amalgamated into the superpower Oceania which is no more than a notion of the nature of reality forged in an Oxford or Cambridge common room. Anthony Burgess
