| | | | | From The Publisher There was once a prince who wanted to marry a princess, but she had to be a real princess. So he traveled around the world and met many women who claimed to be princesses, but he could never be sure. One night, during a terrible storm a young woman came to the gates of the castle, claiming to be a princess. The old queen was skeptical, so she devised a test. She ordered the servants to bring her a single small pea, which she placed under the mattress in the bed where the princess was to sleep. Then she took twenty mattresses and laid them down on the pea and put twenty quilts on top of the mattresses. No one but a real princess could be sensitive enough to feel the pea.
Children have always been spellbound by this classic tale, yet never has it been so simply told, or so spledidly illustrated, as in this handsome edition by Dorothee Duntze.
