 In Brief
New edition of a volume in which Trachtenberg (Institute of Fine Arts at New York U.) and Hyman (fine arts, New York U.) explore the dramatic changes in form, materials, and technology that have defined the built environment from prehistory to the present. (The title of the 1986 edition was Architecture, from prehistory to post-modernism.) Fourteen chapters begin with Greece and Rome and continue through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque, to the modern world. They provide long views of historical trends, and close looks at major works and important architectural themes, technological innovations, and sociopolitical, economic, and ideological forces. New material includes developments from about 1980 to 2000. Contains 1039 illustrations, 91 of which are in color. Oversize: 9x11.5". Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

 From The Publisher
This highly regarded, exceptionally well-written book brings to life the entire sweep of architectural history, and its greatest buildings, from the prehistoric era to the present. For over 15 years readers have relied on this incomparable work for its lucidity, originality, splendid illustrations, and nuanced interpretation of architecture. Now in its Second Edition, the top-selling history of architecture is better than ever with an updated introduction, new insights based on recent research, improved illustrations, and above all a new chapter -- on the most significant and controversial works of contemporary architecture from 1980 to 2000 -- that proposes challenges for the future.
