Quotations

"The only obligation to which in advance we may hold a novel, without incurring the accusation of being arbitrary, is that it be interesting."

 From The Publisher
This beautiful, immediately accessible, and genuinely global map portrait of world history has at its core more than 470 detailed full-color maps. In addition, over 1,000 photographs and illustrations, clear explanatory text, and individual timelines add further to the level of information available. These features combine to build a unique and fascinating insight into the rise and fall of empires, the birth of nations, and the development of commerce, culture, language, and religion from ancient times to present day.

The DK Atlas of World History has an innovative two-tier structure, presenting both a comprehensive overview of human history and detailed, region-by-region narratives. Part One: Eras of World History, contains 26 world maps, which form a continuous portrait of the changing map of the globe through time -- from the emergence of modern humans to the dawn of the new millennium. Each world map is complemented by in-depth analysis of a major aspect of the changing global scene from that era. Part Two examines regional histories in detail, concentrating on the development of nation-states, languages, religion, and culture. Arranged chronologically, each historical map is accompanied by photographs, contemporary illustrations, and timelines, while authoritative commentary competes the portrayal of the development of each part of the world.

The DK Atlas of World History features an extensive encyclopedic index that puts essential facts at your fingertips. Far wider in its scope than a conventional index, this invaluable quick-reference guide contains over 20,000 entries, including full gazetteer listings and biographies of historical figures, together with concise descriptions of the major events that have shaped our world. Comprehensive, coherent, and clearly presented, this historical reference work is an essential addition to every home and library.
