 In Brief
The protagonists "are a married, middle-aged American named Philip living in London and the married Englishwoman who is his mistress. . . . {This novel, written completely in dialogue, includes their} talk before and after making love. . . . As the adulterous husband of Deception deals day-by-day with the anxieties of his mistress and the suspicions of his wife, . . . {the book also presents} the voices of women out of his past, of other loves and passionsfrom his {life}." (Publisher's note)

 From The Publisher
At the center of Deception are two adulterers in their hiding place. He is a middle-aged American writer named Philip, living in London, and she is an articulate, intelligent, well-educated Englishwoman compromised by a humiliating marriage to which, in her thirties, she is already half-resigned. The book's action consists of conversations—mainly the lovers talking to each other before and after making love.

"A fiendishly clever piece of work...an amazing feat.... He's invented the purest speech, the most convincing cadences, of any American novelist."—Hudson Review

 Annotation
This book of lovers, overheard, voicing their secrets, is Philip Roth's most erotically original work of fiction since Portnoy's Complaint.

Also Recommended: FRIED CALAMARI and VOX are two other all dialogue novels that really work and I would highly recommend.
