The Signet Shakespeare published by NAL is an economical choice for the beginning student, with clear notes particularly well tailored to American readers. The New Penguin Shakepeare, also inexpensive and accessible to the nonspecialist, offers somewhat more elaborate commentary and a pleasing typographical style. The Oxford Shakespeare provides a level of textual sophistication more likely to appeal to the specialist, and incorporates sometimes controversial innovations in the establishment of a definitive text.
