The First Men in the Moon (1901) is one of the most dazzling of Wells's "scientific romances," and the last of the series which began with The Time Machine. Leaving their humdrum lives in Kent, Mr. Bedford and Mr. Cavor invade the moon and are captured by the ant-like Selenites. They are forced to confront their own littleness when viewed in a cosmic perspective, and the result is a highly entertaining satire on imperialism in particular and human frailty in general.

In this 1901 classic, Wells's 'first men in the moon' practice lunar locomotion, get lost in a moon jungle, and confront intelligent life in lunar caverns. Through the adventures of these two earthlings, the author is able to burlesque the effects of specialization. The result is a delightful tale filled with adventure, romance, and fantasy that still stirs the imagination.

H.G.(Herbert George) Wells (1866-1946), born of lower middle class parents, was largely self-educated. A government scholarship allowed him to attended the Royal College of Science where he studied with Thomas Henry Huxley. Although he wrote a number of different types of fiction as well as non-fiction, he is best remembered for his science fiction. His firm grounding in science shows forth in this genre. In 1938, Orson Welles, broadcast a dramatization on radio of H. G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds, which was so believable that people fled their homes to avoid the Martian invasion.
