Quotations

"A good many young writers make the mistake of enclosing a stamped, self-addressed envelope, big enough for the manuscript to come back in. This is too much of a temptation to the editor."

  - Ring Lardner

(1885 - 1933),
'How to Write Short Stories'

 From The Publisher
ON TOP OF THE WORLD weaves together two central narratives: First, the story of the September 11th, Howard Lutnick's attempt to help his colleagues, which nearly resulted in his death, and the long aftermath, which has turned at times into a media circus and triggered much public debate. The second story is of the remarkable and sometimes contentious rise to power that took Howard Lutnick to the top of Wall Street by age 30 and by 40 made him one of the richest people in the country. Interwoven with Howard's history is the story of his young firm and the 700+ traders and partners (including his brother and best friend) who died when the World Trade Center collapsed on September 11. (The September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center was the greatest catastrophe to occur on U.S. soil since the Civil War. More than 3,000 people died, a far greater number than those lost at Pearl Harbor and in the Oklahoma City bombing.)

In many ways the changes that Howard and his firm now face are emblematic of what the country as a whole has undergone, and the questions this book asks are ones the whole country is thinking about: Will we rise above and defeat this terror? Can we become larger than ourselves? Can we become something greater, more compassionate without losing our edge? Howard Lutnick is an icon, and a target, not unlike America itself-prosperous and revered, envied and resented, and now facing and evolving into an uncertain future.
