 From The Publisher
The September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center was the greatest catastrophe to occur on U.S. soil since the Civil War. More than 3,000 people died, a far greater number than those lost at Pearl Harbor and in the Oklahoma City bombing.

From all available evidence, of the four horrific hijackings, Flight 93, which crashed in a field outside the small town of Shanksville, PA, resonates as one of heroic resistance. A number of passengers made phone calls to relatives and others on the ground, announcing that they planned to overtake the hijackers. In doing so, they appear to have brought gallant consolation to a number of Americans. At a time of grieving and confused, enraged vulnerability, when the U.S. appeared defenseless against an unfamiliar foe, the valiant passengers of Flight 93 provided for many Americans the solace of defiance. Their fighting back brought a measure of victory to unthinkable defeat. They seemingly accomplished what all the security guards and soldiers and military pilots and government officials could not--they thwarted the terrorists, sacrificing their lives so that thousands of others might live.

This is the story--as told through interviews, records, and investigative reporting--of these heroic men and women, and of the day that forever changed the way Americans view the world, and themselves.
