Adventure Guides Central America Ancient Ruins
"The Rio Usumacinta was once the Mayas' greatest trade route. Today, however, nothing moved on the placid water except our long wooden motorboat and the occasional egret and kingfisher. The notion of our remoteness hit all of us. It felt like we were venturing into the unknown."

Coral Seas
"Our captain casts a handful of sardines into the Caribbean water. The boat tilts as we lean on the starboard deck. The stingrays are first at the table, followed closely by the sharks. Tails thrash and fins poke above the water in a spectacle that is simultaneously exciting and horrifying."

Remote Caves
"We passed a beautiful waterfall, and we soon found ourselves scrambling around rocks, and squeezing through holes. Beautiful stalactites and wonderful hanging tables made the cave look like a fantasy landscape from a science-fiction movie."

A Live Volcano
"We walked to the edge and peered into the eye of the crater. Smoke billowed out, sounding like a rushing wind and blending into the clouds. Occasionally a loud cracking noise echoed from below as the crust split."

How to have the Adventure of a Lifetime Exploring remote jungles, mountains or deserts accessible only by 4×4, railway or the more traditional transport-mule Climbing mountain peaks or Bird Watching in an isolated forest Trekking through dense jungle to view the incredible achievements of the sophisticated civilizations that once flourished throughout Central America Canoeing up great rivers, Scuba-Diving around beautiful coral reefs or, if you feel truly intrepid, White-Water Rafting over mountain rapids Any of these may lead you to fantastic wildlife, peaceful Maya Indian villages, old pirate haunts, primary rain forest or jungle-covered ruins. Challenge Rating
  1. If you've even thought about booking the trip, you'll manage
  2. Not too difficult, but you may need some basic skills
  3. You will need to be fit, with lots of stamina, and you may need specialist qualifications
  4. You need to be fit and determined-not for the faint-hearted*
  5. This is for the serious adventurer-physically and mentally challenging!*

Author Biography: About the Authors
FIONA DUNLOP'S taste for the tropics, for ancient cultures and for developing countries has been tested to the full while writing travel books on Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia, Vietnam, India, Costa Rica and Mexico. Before her immersion in this peripatetic lifestyle, she spent 15 years in Paris where she worked in, and wrote about, the arts for numerous art and interior design magazines. Now based in London, she continues to cover contemporary design between her travels. Her articles have appeared in the Observer, the Sunday Times, The Times, Elle Decoration, and Homes & Gardens amongst others.

JANE EGGINTON is a travel writer and researcher who writes magazine features as well as guide books. Jane has written for many publishers including Reader's Digest and Thomas Cook, and was a winner in the Observer Young Travel Writer of the Year Award. Jane has travelled extensively throughout Britain, Asia, Australasia and the Americas, both for work and for pleasure. Central and South America remain favourite destinations both for their beautiful, varied landscapes and for the adventures and activities they offer. She is currently writing a guide book to Mexico.

CARL PENDLE studied photography and creative writing whilst at university in America. After graduating, he returned home to England, first working as a newspaper photographer and then as a copywriter for an advertising agency. He's been a freelance travel writer and photographer since 1991 and has recently become a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers. During his assignment in Central America, he braved hurricane Mitch in a single-engined plane in Nicaragua, so swimming with sharks in Belize was no problem. Carl's work has also appeared in GQ, Active, Maxim, Washington Post and the Independent.

STEVE WATKINS Photographer and writer Steve Watkins specialises in covering adventure travel, extreme sports and cultural issues, especially if it involves his favourite destinations—Latin America and Australia, where he lived for four years. His work has featured in numerous magazines, newspapers, books and corporate brochures, including Wanderlust, Traveller, Travellers Handbook, No Limits World, Global Adventure, Mountain Biking UK, and various BBC publications, and his photographs have been widely exhibited, including at London's Barbican gallery. He has recently finished writing Adventure Sports Europe, to be published by Queensgate Publishing in spring 2000. He is now based in South Wales.
