A small tree growing to about 23 feet (7 m) with small needle-like leaves and botfiebrush-like yellowy or purplish flowers. The tree is native to New South Wales in Australia.
Extraction Method
Steam distillation of the leaves and twigs.
Nature of the Oil
A pale yellow liquid. The aroma is strong and medicinal, reminiscent of a mixture of juniper and cypress. The odour effect is cooling and head-clearing.
Add one or two drops to a moist cotton pad for application to appropriate skin areas. Do not use full strength on face.
Ingredients
Tea Tree Oil
Cautions
There are many reports of minor skin reactions caused by tea tree. Unfortunately, the market is flooded with adulterated and modified versions of the oil and this may explain why it does not always live up to its benign reputation. Caution should be exercised if the oil is used neat or in high concentration. Formal skin tests carried out on humans involved 1 per cent dilutions of the oil. The potential irritant or sensitising effects of regular applications at higher levels is still unknown.
