Medicinal Usage
Long before the use or possession of hemp was made illegal in Britain, the herb was widely cultivated in monastic gardens as a drug for helping depression, easing pain, relieving muscle spasms and inducing sleep. Pliny said that "its seed is reputed to make the genitals impotent. Its juice drives out of the ears the worms and any other creature that has entered them, but at the cost of a headache; so potent is its nature that when poured into water it is said to make it coagulate." Culpeper noted that "the decoction of the root eases the pains of the gout, the hard humours of knots in the joints, the pains and shrinkings of the sinews, and the pains of the hips."
Miscellaneous
Possibly a native of Europe as well as parts of Asia, hemp was grown at least 5,000 years ago as a fibre plant, its stems being used to make rope, string, cordage, sacking and sail cloth. Its use as a mind-affecting drug was, according to Herodotus, the Greek historian of the fifth century BC, known to the ancient Scythians, who got high by inhaling the fumes of the roasted seeds. In medieval England the stout cloth woven from the plant by cottagers in their homes was known as 'hempen home-spun'.
