Lemon Verbena Herb Information
The specific epithet of the synonym is repeated in the wholly satisfactory common name, lemon verbena. This is a Chilean shrub, not very hardy, coarse in leaf, and when in occasional flower (when it bothers) quite undistinguished - a combination of attributes which might be thought to place it at the bottom of anyone's hundred best herbs. Yet it is near the top. For its rough-textured narrow leaves have one of the most delicious lemon scents available, warm, rich and strong: a few crumbs left to dry in a coat pocket and discovered months later will evoke perfectly the moment and place of their picking.
Lemon verbena needs a light, warm soil (it is very happy on chalk) and, in all but the mildest gardens, a sheltered sunny wall as well. Alternatively it can be grown in a large pot and overwintered indoors. Like old specimen pelargoniums or fuchsias it can be pruned back and almost (but not quite) dried off. Then with lengthening days, spraying the top with warm water will bring it gently into growth ready in a few weeks to be stood out when frosts are over.
The leaves are used to make a tea, pleasant and effective against nausea. They are also obviously invaluable in potpourri and scented sachets. Lemon verbena is an essential plant in every herb garden which deserves the title.
One of the most delightful of scented plants, lemon verbena has a strong citrus aroma that is at its most powerful in the early evening. A native of South America, it thrives best in hot climates, where it will grow up to 5 feet tall and almost as wide. It is, therefore, a good choice as a back-of-the-bed plant in sunny borders.
History
The plant was brought to Europe by the Spaniards, and was used as a source of fragrant oil for perfume.
Characteristics
The woody stems are tough, angular, and have many branches, giving the plant, which grows to a height of 5 feet, its bushy, spreading characteristic. The long, pointed-oval and pale green leaves are about 4 inches long and 1/4 inch wide. The flowers, which grow in clusters along the stem, are pale purple and bloom in late summer.
Growing Tips
A perennial, deciduous shrub, lemon verbena is hardy to a temperature of 40°F. This means that in cool climates it needs protection in winter. It may be grown from seed, or from soft cuthngs taken in July and grown in sandy soil under cover. The bush should be pruned in spring to contain its growth and remove dead wood.
How to Use
The strong citrus aroma is used to flavor stuffings for meat, poultry, and fish, in fish dishes and sauces, fruit salads, poached fruit, soft drinks, and cream sweets. The herb may be substituted for lemongrass in south-east Asian dishes.
Lemon verbena produces a sharp, lemon-scented essential oil used in cosmetics for oily skins and used extensively in the perfume industry. It should be used with caution in skin preparations as it may cause irritation. The flowers and leaves of the herb are not particularly pungent but can be used in bath bags and potpourri.
Medicinally, a tea made from the dried leaves can help reduce nausea and flatulence, ease nervous anxiety, and help calm palpitations. | | Directions
