Gum-omile is an almond oil based blend useful for teething babies and toothaches. Customers have shared many stories of a night's sleep saved by the pain-relieving and soothing effects of this herbal combination. Gum-omile contains Clove oil which many dentists still use in their practices as an effective analgesic. Place Gum-omile directly on gums to relieve the pain and inflammation of teething. Try it on your own gums and see how well it works! If you feel it is too strong for your child, dilute it with vegetable oil. Avoid directly swallowing herbal oils.
Note: Sometimes parents find our Chamomile Calm blend (see Nerve Support Blends) helpful to calm a teething child.
"Gum-omile helped us avoid a nursing strike. My 10-month-old son was teething. He started biting my breast at the beginning of every nursing. I was afraid that my strong reaction (Oww!) would scare him, but I was getting hurt! Both mom and baby shed some tears. My wonderful internet parenting group suggested "Herbs for Kids Gum-omile." Your product, along with some other tips for teething pain/biting while nursing has remedied the problem and I am thrilled to be continuing the nursing relationship, as is my baby. Thank you!" - Laura Z., Cedar Grove, NJ
Use an herbal oil directly on the gums. Avoid directly swallowing herbal oils. Teething is difficult for the child as well as the parent! Sometimes it feels as if the day will never end, yet teething occupies a fairly short time in a child's life. Nonetheless, parents are often desperate to find a pain-relieving remedy.
Symptoms: Aside from the obvious drooling, chewing and crankiness, teething can also be associated with diarrhea, fever and diaper rash. To add insult to injury, the child is often wakeful at night. Watch for concurrent ear infections due to swelling of the maxilla (upper jaw).
Other Relief:
Most babies enjoy chewing on something cold. Try putting their favorite safe toy in the freezer.
Massage your baby gently. One traditional Chinese acupressure point is on the back of the hand at the end of the crease between thumb and forefinger. This point has been used for centuries as a form of dental anesthesia.
To take the edge off, give a calming herbal blend, such as an alcohol-free Chamomile and Skullcap formula
Elevate the head of the child's crib or bed 1 - 2 inches.
Enjoy regular doses of calming Rescue Remedy flower essences.

What an honor it is for each of us to be involved in children's health care! To be allowed to participate in such a vital part of a child's growth is certainly one of the greatest satisfactions we could ever receive. Sharing the age-old tradition of using healing plants to nourish and soothe an ailing child is not only a health care decision; it's an art, an act of environmental commitment, a quest for more information, a pledge towards a gentler, simpler and more affordable way of life. Teaching children to appreciate remedies that come from the garden is one simple step towards the lifestyle we all yearn for, and can be the hands-on approach to taking part in our own health care that is our birthright.
Herbal medicine must be used wisely. We are fortunate to live in a time when excellent technological treatments are available for major health challenges. We must now be willing to learn what our limitations are, and what the limitations of modern medicine are. As parents and herbal educators, we must co-operate, in the finest sense of the word, with our medical practitioners: listening carefully to our doctors' good advice, learning from them as we see them learning from us and creating a partnership of trust that includes the safe use of herbs. Keep in mind that herbal remedies are gentle yet strong, and must be used 3 - 5 times per day for results.
Life moves quickly in these times of change. A child's illness is often an invitation to slow down, rest, play and to be loved. Be sure to listen to their message. Trust the plants.
