Brazilian Guava, (Latin: Psidium guineense) is a pear shaped fruit with a slightly resinous, almost strawberry like flavor. At least that's the straightforward definition. The more interesting definition is this: Brazilian Guava is a fruit native to Brazil that features periodically in ancient voodoo rituals in the darkened, sultry and steamy corners of South America.
Voodoo, the ancient mix of African and European religions is actually known as Candoble by its Brazilian practitioners. The fruit is periodically offered as nourishment for the many African gods and goddesses during ceremonies and rituals. The fruit may be cut open and the juice dribbled onto the dusty floor of Candoble temples as a kind of sacrifice to the divine. Well, if it's good enough for the gods it's good enough for us!
We've blended the exotic flavor of Brazilian Guava with the finest Ceylon tea available on the market. The result is a pleasingly astringent cup with wispy notes of strawberry like sweetness and sultry tropical highlights.
What type of tea do we use, how do we flavor the tea and why do we use natural flavors?
Firstly...we only use high grown teas from the top 3 tea growing regions of Sri Lanka - Nuwara Eliya, Dimbula and Uva. These three high-grown districts produce flavorful teas that have classic "Ceylon" tea character which is noted by floral bouquet and flavor notes, touches of mild astringency, bright coppery color and, most importantly - perfect for use as the base tea of our flavored teas. (We have tested teas from various other origins around the world as base stock for our flavored teas, but none of these teas made the grade. We may pay more for high grown Ceylons, but the taste is worth it).
Dimbula and the western estates of Nuwara Eliya have a major quality peak during Jan/Feb, whereas Uva and the eastern estates of Nuwara Eliya have their peak in July/Aug. This "dual peak period" allows us to buy the best for our flavored tea blends several times during the year, ensuring top quality and freshness.
Secondly...we use flavoring oils not crystals to give the tea drinker an olfactory holiday before indulging in the liquid tea delicacy.
Thirdly...we specify natural flavors. High quality tea tastes good and natural flavors do not mask the natural taste of the high grown Ceylon tea. (The norm for many making flavored tea is to use overpowering artificial flavors which can be used to hide lower quality tea). Natural flavors do not leave an aftertaste giving the tea a clean and true character. It should be noted that natural flavors tend to be somewhat "soft" and the flavors slightly muted, but for many this is a refreshing change and one of the desired attributes of our naturally flavored teas.

Since time began, Comoros islanders have recorded stories of Red Headband, so named after the great red headband that holds back his wild hair. In these stories the giant sometimes appears as large as a house and descends from his lair to feast on flocks of herd animals, groups of wandering hunters, even innocent townsfolk. He is not a nice man - believe it. Luckily for the people of the Comoros islands, there is one item that has proven effective in warding him off - fresh guava. In some remote villages it is believed that if you leave the fresh fruit outside your house Red Headband will take it and leave your household unscathed. What attracts him to the fruit? Is it the sweet pungent aroma? Its creamy orangey-pink flesh? High vitamin count? (Guava is rich in vitamins A, B and C) Who knows? But when you're dealing with an evil giant you don't ask a lot of questions!
Well, we like to think that a pot of Guava Comoros green tea might have the same effect. This mellow tea captures the sweet musky character of the fruit amazingly well. So what kind of tea did we use in its creation? We've sourced a top quality Sencha style green tea manufactured in Hunan Province, South Eastern China. The tea is produced by skipping the fermentation process required to produce black tea. Interestingly, both green and black teas can be produced from the same bushes. In green manufacture, the freshly plucked leaves are steamed immediately and then bruised either by machine or hand. Next the leaf is either pan-fried or basket fired - a process that gives the tea its distinctive glossy look and feel. Senchas typically have dark green, needle shaped leaves and produce a pale green to yellow, very bright and smooth cup with a sweetish, honey like finish. Blended with guava the cup is light, fruity with faint hints of cream. Do you have a Red Headband in your life? Brew a pot of this amazing tea and take a sip. We can't promise you your "problem" will go away, but we can promise that you'll feel a lot more relaxed about a whole lot of things.

Guava Tree Psidium guajava L.
Family: Myrtaceae.
Other Names: Goyave, goyavier (French); Guayavebaum (German); guava (Italian).
Description: The guava is a shrub or small tree, usually up to 4 in in height. The bark peels off in flakes, revealing the characteristically smooth, pale-coloured trunk and branches. The large leaves have prominent veins and are borne opposite each other in pairs. Small white flowers, with numerous stamens develop into rounded or pear-shaped, yellow, many-seeded fruits. Guavas have pink or yellow fruit flesh, are delicious to eat and have a high vitamin C content.
Origin: Central America. The guava has become naturalised in many parts of the world and is widely cultivated as a commercial fruit crop.
Parts Used: Fresh or dried leaves (Djamboe folium; synon. Psidii pyriferi folium).
Therapeutic Category: Anti-diarrhoeal, traditional healthy blood sugar level supportive.
Uses and Properties: Leaves are commonly used traditionally, can be used to help support digestion issues (such as diarrhoea) and blood sugar level concerns, but also fever (including malaria), cough, skin irritations, boils and wounds.
Preparation and Dosage: Infusions of leaves are taken as tea. For severe diarrhoea, the recommended dose is one crushed leaf in a litre of water.
Active Ingredients: Guava leaf is rich in tannins (9-12%) and other phenolic compounds, amritoside (a glycoside - gentiobioside - of ellagic acid) is of particular interest. Another biologically interesting compound is guiajaverin, a glycoside (arabinopyroside) of quercetin. The leaves also contain 0.3% essential oils (with eugenol) and triterpenoids that may contribute to the overall positive health activity.
Health Effects: Tannins are known intestinal astringents and haemostatics, so their presence can plausibly explain the therapeutic value of the plant against diarrhoea and dysentery. The tannins have vasoconstricting activity, form a protective layer on the skin and mucosas and are disinfectant and so that they are effective against both internal and external infections. Quercetin (and its glycosides) are known for antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, immunity-supporting and disinfectant activities. In addition, hypoglycemic effects have been documented. Eugenol has definite disinfectant properties.
