The spicy, bitter roots and rhizomes of valerian directly affect the liver, heart, and the nervous system. The sedative, hypnotic, nervine, antispasmodic, carminative, stimulant, and anodyne properties of the herb have made it one of the most widely prescribed natural remedies for insomnia, stress, and nervousness; it is also recommended for conditions such as menstrual cramps and general pain relief. In terms of biochemical components, the root contains essential oil, valepotriates, alkaloids (including actinidine, valerine, and others), choline, flavonoids, sterols, tannins, and other ingredients.
Useful for general nervousness and insomnia, valerian also relieves gas, spasms, pains and general symptoms of stress.
For nervousness and insomnia, combine equal parts valerian root, skullcap, herb, passionflower, cramp bark, black cohosh, ginger and licorice. Make into a tea or powder and take one cup three times daily, ideally with a dose of calcium and magnesium.

Cautions
Valerian should not be used for more than 2 to 3 weeks at a time, as it may then be harmful or become addictive. Large doses or extended use may produce symptoms of poisoning. In extremely high doses, it may cause paralysis and a weakening of the heart. Take the tea twice daily, for no more than 2-3 weeks at a time without a break, as continual use or high doses may lead to headaches and palpitations. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Use under medical supervision.
Valerian enhances the action of sleep-inducing drugs, so avoid if taking this type of medication. Do not confuse with the garden plant, red "American" valerian (Centranthus ruber) which has no medicinal properties.
