Not to be confused with the red valerian, Centranthus ruber, Valeriana officinalis was known in medieval Europe as "All Heal". It is a tall airy plant for a damp spot in the garden in either sun or shade. Valerian is native to Europe and temperate regions of Asia and has naturalized in America. It grows in damp grassland, meadows, and by water.
History
The name probably comes from the Latin vafere, to be well. Valerian was recommended by Hippocrates and was recorded in the Anglo-Saxon "leech books" in the eleventh century. It was widely grown in the monasteries as a spice and perfume. The smell of the root is rather like sweaty leather, and is very attractive to cats and rats. It is said that the Pied Piper of Hamelin carried a piece in his pocket! It was used in World War I to treat shell-shock.
Characteristics
Valerian is a hardy perennial with hollow stems that grow up to 4 feet. It has bright green, toothed, pinnate leaves and pale pink or white flowers in terminal clusters from early to midsummer.
Growing Tips
Propagate by seed sown indoors or outside in spring. Plant in sun or shade in any soil but where the plants will have a cool root run.
How to Use
A good handful of the grated dried valerian root and double the quantity of dried chamomile flowers added to the water will provide a sleep-inducing bath.
Medicinally, the root is used to help induce sleep and relaxation, allowing the body to divert its healing powers to where they are most needed.
The traditional remedial uses for this herb include: hysteria, cramps, indigestion, high blood pressure, painful periods, palpitations, and insomnia.

Directions
Stir 1/4 of a teaspoon into a glass of water and consume 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Valerian should not be used for more than 2 to 3 weeks at a time, as it may then be harmful or become addictive. Large doses or extended use may produce symptoms of poisoning. In extremely high doses, it may cause paralysis and a weakening of the heart. Take the tea twice daily, for no more than 2-3 weeks at a time without a break, as continual use or high doses may lead to headaches and palpitations. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Use under medical supervision.
Valerian enhances the action of sleep-inducing drugs, so avoid if taking this type of medication. Do not confuse with the garden plant, red "American" valerian (Centranthus ruber) which has no medicinal properties.
