Description
Scullcap, or Scutellaria lateriflora, a member of the mint family, is a perennial herb native to southeastern North America, from New York to W. Virginia, and South Carolina, Missouri, and Alabama. It can generally be found in thick woods, bluffs, and along roadsides. Its root is a creeping, short rhizome which sends up square stems. The stems are branched and 6-18 inches tall. The leaves, soft and heart-shaped at the base, grow to be 1/2" to 2-1/2" long, with scalloped or serrated edges. The flowers of Scullcap range from blue to lavender to purple. They are tube-shaped and hooded, and bloom from May to August. The aerial part of the plant is used in herbal preparations.
A powerful medicinal herb, Scullcap has been used by Native Americans for generations, generally to treat female problems and nervous disorders. It is anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, astringent, febrifuge, nervine, and tonic. Scullcap contains volatile oil, bitter iridoids, tannins, Scutellarin, and Catapol. Scientific studies have shown Scullcap to be effective in the treatment of many mental disorders. It is used to effectively treat epilepsy, hysteria, anxiety, insomnia, and withdrawal from certain drug addictions such as barbiturates and tranquilizers, or alcohol. Additionally, it is taken internally to treat convulsions, neuralgia, and delirium tremens. It acts as a sedative, inducing sleep when necessary, and leaves no unpleasant aftereffects. An infusion of Scullcap can be used to promote menstruation, and it is known to reduce fevers and stimulate the kidneys.
