Description
Scullcap (Skullcap) Scutellaria lateriflora L.
Family: Lamiaceae.
Other Names: Scutellaire, scutellaire latériflore (French); Virginia-Helmkraut (German); scutellaria (Italian).
Description: Skullcap is a leafy perennial herb of about 0.5 m in height, with erect branches bearing opposite pairs of oblong leaves and numerous bluish or violet flowers borne in a cluster. It is similar to Baical skullcap or huang quin (S. baicalensis) and European skullcap (S. galericulata). The common names refer to the helmet-shaped flowers.
Origin: North America (S. lateriftora), Russia to China and Japan (S. baicalensis) and Europe (S. galericulata).
Parts Used: Dried aerial parts (S. lateriflora); dried roots (S. baicalerisis).
Therapeutic Category: Anticonvulsant, sedative (S. lateriflora, S. galericulata); anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, circulatory (S. baicalensis).
Uses and Properties: The American and European skuilcaps are traditional nerve tonics and sedatives. The American species became well known as a treatment for epilepsy, grand mat, hysteria and nervous conditions. It is today widely used in commercial preparations, mainly for nervous conditions - tension, anxiety and insomnia. Baical skullcap is one of the most important Chinese remedies and is very popular for a wide variety of ailments, including the treatment of allergies, inflammation, arteriosclerosis, dermatitis and high blood lipids.
Preparation and Dosage: An infusion of 1 - 2 g of the dried herb is taken three times per day (or equivalent doses in the form of tinctures and extracts)
Active Ingredients:Scutellaria species are known for their rich diversity and abundance of flavonoids, to which most of the medicinal properties are ascribed. S. lateriflora is said to contain apigenin, hispidulin, luteolin, scutellarein and scutellarin as main flavonoids, together with catalpol (an iridoid glycoside). The roots of S. baicalensis have numerous flavonoids (up to 20%), with flavone-O-glycosides (mainly baicalin and and wogonoside) as main compounds.
Pharmacological Effects: Several studies have been carried out with S. baicalensis (mostly on lipid metabolism and histamine) but very few on S. lateriflora. Baical skullcap does not appear to have any antispasmodic activity but has shown efficacy in the treatment of the symptoms of cerebral thrombosis and paralysis caused by stroke.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.
