Description: The dog rose is a woody creeper (up to 5 m), with curved thorns on the stem, leaves with about three pairs of toothed leaflets, attractive pink flowers and fleshy red fruits known as rose hips. Various species are acceptable sources of rose hips and seeds. Extracts of the distinctive thorny hips of R. roxburghii are a nutritional supplement in China.
Origin:R. canina is indigenous to Europe and Asia (naturalised in North America). R. gallica (common rose), considered to be of Iranian origin, has given rise to a bewildering diversity of cultivars through crossing and backcrossing with other species.
Parts Used: Dried, ripe fruit with the seeds removed (Rosae pseudofructus), dried seeds, dried flowers and essential oil distilled from flowers.
Therapeutic Category: Diuretic.
Uses and Properties: Rose hips (with or without seeds) are traditionally used to treat a diversity of ailments of the gastrointestinal tract and nowadays mainly to enhance the flavour of tea mixtures. Seeds are a traditional diuretic and used against various disorders of the urinary tract. Dried petals of Rosa gallica and R. x centifolia are used in mouth rinses to treat mild inflammation. The essential oil of R. x centifolia and R. x damascena ("attar of rose") is very popular in aromatherapy (said to have mild sedative, antidepressant and anti-inflammatory activity). Rosewater is a traditional eye lotion.
Preparation and Dosage: Infusions are made of 2 - 2.5 g crushed rose hips (with or without seeds), 1 - 2 g of powdered seeds and 1 - 2 g of rose flower.
Active Ingredients: Rose hips contain ascorbic acid (up to 2.4% vitamin C), pectins, carotenoids (mainly rubixanthin, lycopene and beta-carotene), flavonoids, tannins, organic acids (malic and citric acid) and sugars. Seeds are rich in gamma-linolenic acid and linoleic acid. Petals contain tannins.
Pharmacological Effects: Diuretic, hypoglycaemic and antioxidant and astringent (petals) effects have been shown experimentally. The seed oil of R. Moschata helps to reduce scars (from acne, surgery) and wrinkles.

Hot tea brewing method: Bring freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 tea bag for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the pot, cover and let steep for 2-4 minutes. Pour into your cup; add milk and sugar to taste.
Iced tea brewing method: (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 5 tea bags into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea itself. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into the serving pitcher straining the tea bags. Add ice and top-up with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste.
