The bland and somewhat bitter plantain leaf (also called Englishman's foot, ribwort, or greater plantain) is one of the most common plants in the world. There are two general species: a narrow-leaved variety called P. lanceolata and a broad-leaved variety called P. major. Generally the broad-leaved variety is preferred, but the narrow-leaved species seems to work just as well.
The diuretic, alterative, anti-inflammatory, and aperient actions demonstrated by this herb in laboratory studies make it useful for treating disorders associated with the bladder, the small intestines, and the gall bladder. It is commonly recommended for conditions such as urinary tract infections, hepatitis, stings, bites, and wounds. Both the leaves and seeds are used medicinally, and contain iridoids, aucubin, flavonoids, mucilage, and tannins.
Plantain is useful for urinary tract infections; the aucubin helps the secretion of uric acid from the kidneys. The apigenin and baicalem are anti-inflammatory and antiallergenic. It is good internally for all inflammations including hepatitis and bacillary dysentery. The leaves are applied externally to antidote bites and stings of venomous insects and animals. For more serious cases, a poultice of the leaves is applied and an extract of tea or tincture is taken internally every half hour until symptoms subside. Its astringent properties make it useful to stop bleeding and to promote the healing of wounds and injuries.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
