The cooling, refreshing action of mint is well-known, whether it's found in flavored chewing gum, menthol-spiked cigarettes, or candy after-dinner "mints" - which in ancient times were sprigs of actual, fresh mint. The most popular mints are spearmint and its more assertive cousin, peppermint, a natural hybrid of spearmint first recognized in England in 1696. Most herbalists favor peppermint for medicinal purposes; indeed, peppermint is the "mint oil" endorsed by Commission E.
Potential Health Benefits
Peppermint oil is recommended for flatulence, gallbladder disorders, and clearing up inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. It's also approved for external use, to soothe diffuse muscle pain. The active ingredient, menthol, is included in mainstream cold remedies such as Vicks Cough Drops and Mentholatum Cream. Menthol isn't found in spearmint.
Scientific Evidence
Mint oil is obtained by steam distillation of fresh, flowering herb, yielding liquid with at least 42 percent menthol. The commission reports that medicinal amounts of menthol-rich oil stimulates bile flow, has cooling action, relieves gas, and exhibits antibacterial qualities.
Studies published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology in 1997 and 1998 found enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules effective at treating irritable bowel syndrome.
In a 1996 German study, 54 lb patients given a capsule with 90 milligrams of peppermint oil extract combined with 50 milligrams of caraway oil far outpaced a placebo group in reporting beneficial results.
In 1994, researchers found peppermint and. eucalyptus oil as effective as aspirin at relieving tension headache when the mixed oil was spread on the skin.
How to Use the Herb
Mint teas are calming and delicious, although Commission E endorsed the oil, not the teas, for medicinal use. Mint oil can be consumed in water, at average daily doses of 3-6 drops; or you can put 3-4 drops in hot water for inhalation.
For external use, try several drops of mint oil or commercial semi-solid preparations, rubbed on the skin.

Directions
Take 1 capsule, 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Upset stomach may occur for a few folks who take high doses rich in essential oil. More seriously, people with obstruction of the bile ducts, inflamed gallbladder, or severe liver damage shouldn't use mint oil. Keep preparations with mint oil away from the faces of infants and young children, due to their strong, concentrated quality. There are no known drug interactions.
